The number one way to do that is to create a finish early poster or to have established somewhere in the room a list of things that students who finish early can do. So that list might include three things, like read silently, or draw a picture, or finish work from another class, or study for an upcoming test. But when we have multiple things listed that they can choose from, then we can direct them to those activities when they get off task or when they finish early. Not all early finishers will distract others or distract themselves, but because it does happen sometimes, if we have a procedure that's clear and explicitly and something we can drive them towards when they are getting off task or when they have finished something early and aren't doing anything, then it's easier for them to follow those structures in the classroom. The finish early poster is a great way to get early finishers on task with something productive, while the rest of the class finishes the assignment.
