Ask This Old House landscape contractor Roger Cook learns about the ancient art of Bonsai. Click here to SUBSCRIBE to the official This Old House YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=thisoldhouse Time: 3 hours Cost: $50 and Up Skill Level: Moderate Tools List for Creating Bonsai: Concave cutter Bonsai shear Wire cutters Root Rake Shopping List: Tree Bonsai pot Bonsai Wire Bonsai soil Screens Steps: 1. Begin with a tree in a container and find the face and the front that you want to celebrate. 2. The Bonsai height should be about six times the size of the trunk. 3. Take the top off of the tree with the concave cutter. 4. Pluck the needles off the branches to make room for wiring. 5. Prune out smaller branches to give the tree more shape. 6. Use thick Bonsai wire to anchor the tree to the soil and then wrap the trunk to the top. Use wire cutters to cut the wire to size. 7. Use thinner wire to anchor the branches, working from the bottom up. 8. Bend the branches to the desired angles. 9. Rake the roots, starting at the bottom, knocking soil off of the root ball. 10. Spread the roots out. 11. Add screens to the container holes and hold them in place with wire. 12. Add wires to anchor the tree to the container. 13. Add Bonsai soil to the container and set the tree into the container about ⅓ off to the side with the apex appearing to bow. 14. Use wire to anchor the tree to the pot. 15. Add more soil to the pot firmly. Add decorate rocks or moss as desired. 16. Dunk the tree in a basin of water to remove air bubbles. 17. Water with a hose and soft nozzle. 18. After a year, remove the wires from the tree. Resources: Roger visited Bonsai West (http://www.bonsaiwest.com/) in Littleton, Massachusetts. Miło cię poznać. Miło cię poznać. So, it's three words. Let's break them down. Miło. An L with a little line through it, which is an accent, turns the L into a wh, so miło cię, the E with the little accent on the bottom, ę. Cię. Poznać. That little accent on the C turns it into H. So, poznać. So let's try it with all the accents. Miło cię poznać. Miło cię poznać. Go ahead. Try it out. Wow, that was great. To say, I'm glad I met you, cieszę się źe cię poznałem. So this one's a little bit of a tongue twister, so let's take our time and break it down. The first word. Cieszę. So, the SZ makes a sh, and then the accent with an E, ehm, cieszę. The second word is się, so it's the same accent with an E. Się. Źe, and then cię. There's that accent again. Cię. Poznałem. The L with a line through it turns it into wh. Poznałem. So, let's work this through. Cieszę się źe cię poznałem. Cieszę się źe cię poznałem. So, at full speed, this is what it sounds like. Cieszę się źe cię poznałem. I know you have this one. Give it a shot. Take your time. That sounded great. That's how you say, pleased to meet you.

When Early Finishers Distract Others | Classroom Management

The number one way to do that is to create a finish early poster or to have established somewhere in the room a list of things that students who finish early can do. So that list might include three things, like read silently, or draw a picture, or finish work from another class, or study for an upcoming test. But when we have multiple things listed that they can choose from, then we can direct them to those activities when they get off task or when they finish early. Not all early finishers will distract others or distract themselves, but because it does happen sometimes, if we have a procedure that's clear and explicitly and something we can drive them towards when they are getting off task or when they have finished something early and aren't doing anything, then it's easier for them to follow those structures in the classroom. The finish early poster is a great way to get early finishers on task with something productive, while the rest of the class finishes the assignment.

How to Read the Star Card | Tarot Cards

Unlock the mysteries of Tarot: The Complete Guide to the Tarot: http://amzn.to/1Pj0Div The Tarot Bible: The Definitive Guide to the Cards: http://amzn.to/1LlxTzz Chakra Wisdom Oracle Cards: http://amzn.to/1hrj3zE The Essential Tarot Kit: Book and Card Set: http://amzn.to/1ZdkUu5 The Rider Tarot Deck Cards: http://amzn.to/1OmCOXQ Watch more How to Read Tarot Cards videos: https://ift.tt/2r4ZBAt Hello, I'm Ellen Goldberg and I welcome you to this tarot moment on behalf of the school of The School of Oracles. In this segment we're going to look at the star card. One of the most beautiful cards in the deck. In fact one has earned this card by having gone through the two previous stages of evolution. Remember the last seven cards of The Major Arcana are the seven stages of spiritual evolution and we've had the devil, consciousness of bondage and with the tower awakening and here as a result of that we have a period of peace and calm. The stage of revolution. Revolution from within. This card is ruled by the sign of Aquarius, which is the sign associated with mediation. Not only that, it's Hebrew letter, tsadi, which means a fish hook is the means by which we fish for truth interiorly in our own unconscious and in the collective unconscious which is represented in this card by the pool we find truth from within. So it's a card of revolution, of peace, and calm and notice there's no road here. There's nowhere to go. She is completely engaged in ritual, in what she's doing. Why is she naked? Because she is Isis unveiled. It shows that the hidden qualities of nature are revealed to us during meditation. So the Sepher Yetzirah called tsadi the natural intelligence. We understand natural things. When we go within we understand our life. Everything in this card is about healing. Notice the great star in the center surrounded by seven smaller stars, those seven small stars are interior stars, the seven chakras, and the great star is the star of revolution. Stars have always been guiding forces. When you are ready the star of your soul will show its light and guide you. Notice that there's a tree in the background and a red bird. Sometimes that bird is not drawn very well, at all. But what it is supposed to be is a Scarlet Ibis, scared to Hermes and the ibis has a great bill that has a lovely fish hook right at the end. If you've ever been fortunate to go along the Nile you will see those Scarlet Ibises right at the edge of the water dipping and fishing so well with their own natural hook. This is how we fish in meditation. Notice she she has one foot on land and one foot on the water. So she may, indeed, be solidly on the land. But that foot that's standing on the water means she keeps her balance through connection with the collective unconscious. The streams that she pours out of one of her pitchers, not only refer back to Aquarius, the water bearer, but show that they are the fruit of her meditation that goes into the Earth, into our friend. Anything that one person has achieved and all people can achieve. One stream always goes back to the pool. So not only what we achieve is applicable to all other people, but part of it goes to the collective unconscious. Everything in this card is about peace and healing. When this card comes for you in a reading think revelation, finding your truth within rather than in the world of mankind, think of healing or a period of rest or research that you have earned. Very importantly this is a card, I almost forgot to say, of the spiritual quest. So think of the Starry Night, think of Don Quixote, this is a card that encourages the spiritual quest and that may also be a meaning on the higher polarity. On the lower polarity, you're looking in the wrong place for truth. Been looking out in the world for it, rather than inside. Instead of the expectation and belief of the quest there's a kind of dreaminess which is a much more wishy-washy quality, just kind of hoping things will happen. The best way to make things to happen is to expect them, feel them, make them real as if they were true now. Use this card as a meditative aid and it will help bring you peace and revelation. For The School of Oracles I thank you for being with me. Bye for now.

This has been a controversial topic. There are some obstetricians who will recommend that women abstain from alcohol completely during their pregnancy. Other obstetricians will say that it's okay for a woman to drink small amounts in their pregnancy. Most obstetricians would recommend against drinking during the first trimester, and those who will say that drinking is okay in moderation, will usually say, again, not to drink in the first trimester but to drink a very small amount, perhaps a very small amount of wine during the later parts of pregnancy. However, every women should have that discussion with her own obstetrician and take the advice of that physician. If you make a decision while pregnant to drink in consultation with your obstetrician, it's extremely important to remember that if you do drink, you should drink in very small amounts in order to minimize any potential damage to the fetus.

How to Swap the Swing of an Entry Door

Ask This Old House carpenter Nathan Gilbert helps general contractor Tom Silva change the swing of an entry door Click here to SUBSCRIBE to the official This Old House YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=thisoldhouse Time: 4 hours Cost: $100 Skill Level: Moderate Tools List for Swapping the Swing of an Entry Door: Hammer Nail Set Saw horses Drill driver Utility knife Wood chisels Tape measure Pencil Combination square Miter saw Brad nailer Air compressor Forstner bit Shopping List: Wood dowels Scrap wood Wood glue Superglue 100 grit sandpaper Spray primer Steps: 1. Start by removing the door. Use the hammer and a nail set to remove the pins in the hinges. Place the door on saw horses so it’s easier to work on it. 2. Remove the hinges from the door using the screwdriver. 3. Fill in the holes from the hinges using wood dowels. Use a utility knife to shave them down to size, cover them with wood glue, and then hammer them into the holes. Give them a chance to dry, and then hit the excess pieces away with a chisel and hammer. 4. Sand the filled holes down with 100 grit sandpaper. 5. Flip the hinges upside down and drill new holes for them so that the door flips the opposite way. 6. Screw the hinges into their new position. 7. Flip the door upside down to start tackling the hardware. The door handle and deadbolt should be easily removed by unscrewing them. Keep track of any screws or other small parts. 8. Unscrew the striker and flip it upside down so that the door knob will fit the other way. Screw it back into place. 9. Screw the doorknob back into the striker. 10. Repeat this process for the deadbolt. 11. Flip the direction of the door sweep using a chisel and a hammer. Adding a bead of super glue will help it to stick in position. 12. Use a tape measure to measure the distance from the top of the door frame to the top of the hinge mortises. Transfer those measurements to the opposite side of the door frame using a pencil. 13. Use a combination square to ensure the hinge mortises end up at the correct depth on the other side of the door frame. 14. Patch the old hinge mortises using some scrap wood. Use a miter saw to get the wood to the correct depth and size. 15. Apply the patch with wood glue and brad nails, then sand it smooth. 16. To help the patch blend in, spray paint it to roughly match the color of the rest of the door frame. 17. Repeat this process for the striker and deadbolt mortises. 18. Mortise the new hinges on the other side of the door. It will go faster if you use a drill with a forstner bit and then chisel the excess out. 19. Drill and screw the hinges into their new position. 20. Rehang the door using the pins. 21. Take the pencil and color in the striker for the door handle and the dead bolt. Open and close the door a couple times to transfer the mark to the door frame. 22. Chisel out the new mortises for the door handle and dead bolt. Use the drill and forstner bit to get the hole for the striker. 23. Drill and screw the striker plate into the new position. Resources: Depending on the type and material of the entry door, the process will be different. Nathan was working on a fiberglass door that had equal details on both sides. All the tools Nathan used to change the swing of the door, including the drill, spray paint, chisel, and hammer, can be found at home centers. How to Design a Yard in Phases

Ask This Old House landscape designer Jenn Nawada returns to her home state of Florida to help a homeowner design a tropical landscape for his backyard Click here to SUBSCRIBE to the official This Old House YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=thisoldhouse Cost: $10,000 and up Skill Level: Beginner to Expert Steps: 1. Break down the landscape into rooms that all have different purposes and functions but that flow together. This will make each section more manageable and, with a master plan, it will be easier to implement each room as time and budget allows. 2. Some common landscape area functions include a dining area, an entertainment area, garden areas, relaxation areas, and entry/exit areas. 3. Work with the existing footprint to keep the budget down. If there are already established plants in key areas, keep those and underplant with other native plants to accentuate them. 4. Remember that plants don’t need to just line the perimeter of the yard. Put plants in areas around the landscape that allow the landscape to be experienced, rather than just looked at. 5. Establish paths to connect different rooms together. Resources: Jenn suggests breaking a landscape down into separate sections and coming up with a game plan for each section, regardless of whether you plan to work on that section immediately or not. That way, as you add more to the landscape as time and budget allows, everything will connect nicely and not feel disjointed. Also, by breaking the landscape down into sections, it’s easier to give each section a specific purpose or function. In Room 1, Jenn called for artistic concrete to be poured to give the patio a more finished look. The artistic concrete was Pacific Tile in Siberian Haze, with Sandstone grout lines, which is manufactured by Creative Resurfacing (https://ift.tt/2qVG6tP). The shade sail they installed to cool off the patio was manufactured by Creative Shade Solutions (https://ift.tt/2FItQaD). In Room 2, Jacque brought a wide variety of Florida friendly plants, including coontie palm, nandina, smooth cordgrass, and an andonidia palm, which can be found at Zone 9 nurseries and garden centers. For mulch, Jenn and Jacque used pine straw, and for the walkways, they used pine bark mulch. Both of these materials can also be found at nurseries. Expert assistance with this project was provided by Power Lawn Care in Winter Haven, FL, and Playground Services by David Bloom (https://ift.tt/2qUtW4z). I'm the author of Secrets, Tips and Tricks of a Powerful Memory and I'm going to speak a little bit about the connection between your memory and sleep. There's a big connection. In addition to the general 1, where you need a healthy amount of sleep, just to maintain good brain health, there's a more important 1. I'm not a medical doctor, I'm not a psychologist, but I know it by experience and it works like this. When I'm looking to remember something important with any of the many systems that I use and teach, if it's difficult, or big, or important, I will try to learn it before my evenings' sleep. Think about it a little bit and then when I get up in the morning, go back to it. Scientists are saying that there's some connection and that the dream cycle's in some strange way, helps to enforce memories. Let me tell you how important it is to me, if I have to remember something, like a list of attendees at an event where I am a public speaker and I just get an hour or 2 before I start, I will study the list, apply my techniques and then find a quite corner and sneak in a power nap. It does the trick. If I am remembering the crossword puzzle that's in that days newspaper and I only have a little bit of time, a few hours; it'll take me a few hours to do the puzzle, maybe twenty minutes or a half an hour and then I'll spend another ten minutes using my techniques to remember it and again, I'll sneak in a nap. I find that that virtually doubles my capacity to recall things. Try that. Try doing your studying for school at night and then pick it up again in the morning, or anything else that you have to remember. I think you'll find that it helps a lot.

Tool Recommendations for New Homeowners

Ask This Old House host Kevin O’Connor, general contractor Tom Silva, plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey, and landscape designer Jenn Nawada discuss tools that make good gifts for new homeowners Click here to SUBSCRIBE to the official This Old House YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=thisoldhouse Cost: $5 and up Skill Level: Beginner Tools List for New Homeowners: Drill driver Level Tape measure Utility knife Screw driver set Wrench set Open-ended adjustable wrenches Plumber’s pliers Multi-tool Pruners Steps: 1. The team suggests analyzing the skillset of the person receiving the tools. Don’t get tools that are too advanced for the person to actually use. 2. Try to invest in as high quality tools as possible. They will last longer and give a higher quality result. 3. Tom’s picks: drill driver, level, tape measure, utility knife, set of screwdrivers. 4. Richard’s picks: wrench set, open-ended adjustable wrenches, plumber’s pliers, utility knife. 5. Jenn’s picks: pruners. Resources: Tom suggested that a drill driver, a level, a tape measure, a utility knife, and a set of screw drivers all are good tools for homeowners to have to tackle many small projects around the house. Richard’s picks included a wrench set, a couple open-ended adjustable wrenches, and plumber’s pliers. These few tools can handle almost all homeowner-friendly plumbing projects in a house. He also mentioned that one of his favorite tools is a multi-tool, since it can be used for just about anything. For landscaping, Jenn suggested getting a pair of high quality pruners that are tough enough to cut woody shrubs. This will make it easier to keep all the plants in the yard pruned so they are healthier and last longer. The team all agreed that the key to getting good tools is investing in as high quality ones as possible. They work better and will last for much longer. All of these suggestions can be found at home centers. Ask This Old House TV Homeowners have a virtual truckload of questions for us on smaller projects, and we're ready to answer. Anxiety Symptoms in Children | Child Anxiety

No child should suffer depression and anxiety without help, seek professional help for you and your child and here’s some resources for educating yourself along the way: Freeing Your Child from Negative Thinking: http://amzn.to/1jOAGeu How To Get Unstuck From The Negative Muck: http://amzn.to/1Pj1b7O Depression and Your Child: A Guide for Parents and Caregivers: http://amzn.to/1LiG97G What to Do When You're Scared and Worried: A Guide for Kids: http://amzn.to/1jOAOuH What to Do When You Worry Too Much: A Kid's Guide to Overcoming Anxiety: http://amzn.to/1JThS2M Watch more How to Deal with Child Anxiety & Depression videos: https://ift.tt/2qQq2d5 I'm going to talk about anxiety symptoms in children. One thing parents should realize is anxiety is a common, typical emotion. We actually need it. You're never going to get rid of all anxiety. Sometimes it helps us be prepared and be ready, be careful. What we want to talk about is a little bit of what happens when children are having problems with anxiety. Now anxiety is a big term, and there are particular kinds of areas where we feel some kids may have problems with anxiety. They may have all sorts of kinds of anxiety and general signs of anxiety. They may worry. They may have lots of things on their mind and stress about it. They may have physical reactions that let you know that they're feeling anxious. And it's an actual anxious feeling in their body, where their heart is racing, or they have sweaty palms, or they're breathing really fast. And they may also just feel worried all the time, and again, think something terrible is going to happen. Now there are particular kinds of anxiety as well. I'm sure people are familiar with the idea of separation anxiety, and that's where kids are so worried to be away from their parent or their caregiver. They feel like something terrible might happen to them or they'll feel like something terrible will happen to their caregiver or their parent if they're not together. You may have kids that have something like social anxiety, and that's where they are worried in social situations, and when they're in those situations, when they're around a lot of kids, they're in a new situation with friends, then they start to worry, and they may think that they're going to be embarrassed, do something wrong. We also are familiar with, as adults, of anxiety, where you think about having to give a report, and you're going to make a fool of yourself. Kids can have those feelings as well. Kids might also become phobic and have a phobia about certain things - about insects or needles; they don't want to go to the doctor. And when it's a phobia, it means it really has gotten in the way of their functioning. So you can see that anxiety isn't just one thing. What happens is it can be a problem when we feel like it's too intense, in terms of the anxiety is so much that the child can't calm themselves down. It interferes with other parts of their life, so they're not going to school, or they're having nightmares and they're staying up all night, and they can't sleep, because they're so worried about things or scared. And also, it goes on for a long time. It doesn't seem to be getting better, no matter how much you try to problem-solve or reassure or check in the closet or take them to the doctor and show them how you get a needle. There are all sorts of times when kids just can't calm themselves down, and you're at a loss, and that's when you might need someone to help you and go to a professional that can teach you and your child ways to change how you think, how you feel, and then how you behave, to make those anxieties manageable. If you're really worried about your child, and you're anxious about your child's anxiety, a couple things to do is monitor your own anxiety and make sure that you're not also contributing to your child's anxiety, because it's a complicated mix in terms of where anxiety comes from, in terms of the environment, in terms of the genetics of a child, in terms of their brain chemistry, in terms of what they see around them, and sometimes real danger. So when you are worried and it's a concern, because you see your child maybe having trouble and struggling with their anxiety, you want to get to a professional and find someone that knows how to do what we call "cognitive behavior therapy," and that's a very specific kind of intervention that's very effective to helping kids and helping you help your child not be so worried.

How to Paint MDF Furniture

Ask This Old House painter Mauro Henrique demonstrates the best way to paint furniture built out of MDF Click here to SUBSCRIBE to the official This Old House YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=thisoldhouse Time: 1-2 hours Cost: $80 Skill Level: Beginner Tools List for Painting MDF Furniture: Paint brush Paint roller Putty knife Sander Shopping List: Oil-based primer Latex paint in desired color Paint tray Wood filler 220 grit sandpaper Tack cloth Steps: 1. Start by priming the edges on the inside of the cubbies with an oil based primer. Once all the edges have been cut, use a roller to paint the rest of the bench. 2. Allow the primer to dry and then add a second coat the same way. 3. Once the second coat has dried, fill in the nail holes with wood filler and a putty knife. 4. Sand all the filled holes with 220 grit sandpaper. 5. Wipe down the bench with tack cloth to remove the dust from sanding. 6. Paint the top coat of water-based paint on the bench using the same technique as priming. Resources: To prevent water from damaging the MDF, Mauro recommends using an oil-based primer, since it repels water. For this bench, Mauro used BIN shellac base primer, manufactured by Zinsser (https://ift.tt/2PsR74E). For the top coat, Mauro used Benjamin Moore Advanced in “Simply White” with a semi-gloss finish. The top coat is a water-based paint. The other painting materials Mauro used, including the wood filler, paint brushes, and rollers can all be found at home centers and paint supply stores. Special assistance with this project was provided by Mauro’s Painting (https://ift.tt/2s5JDZY). Here's the description: In today's modern world, we are always in such a hurry. We rarely stop to think about the things that “keep the gears turning”. On this podcast, we explore the people, technologies, items, or processes that, while at one time were considered outstanding, have today become so commonplace we take them for granted. This Podcast is an extension of the Youtube Series “How to Make Everything.” In that series, we show how difficult it can be to make an everyday item from scratch if one person, Andy George, had to do everything himself. How to Replace a Shower Cartridge

Ask This Old House plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey travels to Seattle to help a homeowner whose shower runs cold whenever there’s a demand for hot water elsewhere in the house Click here to SUBSCRIBE to the official This Old House YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=thisoldhouse Cost: $30 Skill Level: Beginner Tools List for Replacing a Shower Cartridge: Flathead screwdriver Cartridge removal tool Caulking gun Shopping List: Replacement cartridge Grease Silicone caulking Foam bead Steps: 1. These instructions apply to the earliest models of single handle shower valves. Follow manufacturer’s instructions for your specific style of valve. 2. Start by removing the handle of the shower. There’s usually a cover plate that can be pried off with a flathead screwdriver. Then, hold the handle tight and unscrew the screw behind the cover plate with the same screwdriver. 3. Remove the escutcheon plate by unscrewing it. 4. Look to see if there’s a water shut off near the shower valve. If not, shut the water off at the main water supply line. 5. There’s a small clip holding the cartridge in the shower valve. Carefully pry that up. 6. Use a cartridge removal tool to carefully work the old cartridge back and forth until it can be safely remove from the wall. The cartridge removal tool may be included with the replacement cartridge. 7. Once the cartridge is loose, use a pair of pliers to carefully pull it out of the wall. Don’t force it out. If it gets damaged while being removed, it could destroy the whole valve and then the entire thing will need to be replaced. 8. Put some grease on the replacement cartridge and carefully work it back into the valve. 9. Put the small clip back in to hold the new cartridge in place. 10. Add a bead of silicone and a foam bead around the back of the escutcheon plate to make a watertight seal. 11. Screw the cover plate and the shower handle back into place. 12. Turn the water back on. Resources: Depending on which company manufactured the valve, there may be some variations to how the valve cartridge is replaced. This homeowner had a Moen valve and the replacement parts were manufactured by Moen (https://www.moen.com/). They can be found at most home centers and plumbing supply stores. They sometimes come with a cartridge removal tool, so it helps to get the replacement cartridge before starting the work. The screwdriver and pliers Richard used can be found at home centers. How to Read the Hanged Man Card | Tarot Cards

Unlock the mysteries of Tarot: The Complete Guide to the Tarot: http://amzn.to/1Pj0Div The Tarot Bible: The Definitive Guide to the Cards: http://amzn.to/1LlxTzz Chakra Wisdom Oracle Cards: http://amzn.to/1hrj3zE The Essential Tarot Kit: Book and Card Set: http://amzn.to/1ZdkUu5 The Rider Tarot Deck Cards: http://amzn.to/1OmCOXQ Watch more How to Read Tarot Cards videos: https://ift.tt/2PqxQRi Hello, I'm Ellen Goldberg, and I welcome you to a Tarot moment from the School of Oracles. In this segment we are going to look at the card The Hanged Man. This card comes as part of the triptych, the three cards, that are in the very center of the major arcana. The hanged man is a very special card in so many ways. One involves its Hebrew letter, which is Mem, M-E-M, which means seas or ocean. Mem, M-E-M. It's one of the three most powerful letters in the Hebrew alphabet. They're called the mother letters; Aleph, which goes to The Fool right at the beginning, Mem, which belongs to The Hangman here right in the center of the deck, and Shin, which comes towards the end of the alphabet. These are the three letters that are ruled by elements. The Fool ruled by air itself, The Hanged man ruled by water, and shin, fire. It is said in the oldest book of the Kabbalah, the Sefer Yetzirah, that these were the letters that were the primary ones used when creating the universe, so they are very powerful, and therefore I consider these cards extremely powerful when they come in a reading. Why should a man be suspended upside down as such a powerful card? Here it is wise to notice that this is a card of true repose, true inner peace. The man has a golden nimbus, or halo, around his head. This is a holy state. the word man and the word mind come from the same Sanskrit root, Manas, to think, and so this card could also be called the suspended mind just as easily as it could be called the suspended or hanged man. And to let your mind go, to no longer just depend on our own weak powers of personality, but to have the idea of the true self, Of the divine working through us.  There is the idea of sacrifice here. And life, sometimes when we are entering a new phase, demands a sacrifice so that we can move forward because nothing comes without a certain death as we will see in the very next card, the Death card. I suppose this card prepares us for the great transition that is going to come next, although it's not an actual death, more death of the personality. Here is where we learn to let go and let God. If you notice the way this card is formed, you will see that his legs form a cross, and his arms and the top of his head form a triangle. A cross above the triangle is the inversion of the symbol for sulfur, which in alchemy, the fiery principal, when it is shown inverted, is a symbol of the completion of the great work of self transmutation. I like so much that the great psychologist Carl Young pointed out that the word sacrifice means to make sacred. And here we give things up, we reverse our personality, in order to enter more sacred time. Its very conscious sacrifice. You see in the wide awake deck that he is suspended from a tree, but a curious looking one. It's shaped like a T. And that T is for the last letter of the Hebrew alphabet, Tov, Which means the mark of God, so you see that he is suspended and totally dependent on the divine. In fact it is often said that the greater the addict, the more complete his personal self surrender. When this card comes up in a reading for you and it's on its higher polarity, it has to do with true repose, getting out of your own way, letting go and letting God, letting the mind become quiet, as they say be still and know. And your inner self will soon speak to you. When it is reversed and the hanged man actually looks like he is standing on tiptoe, you are usually filled with anxiety, really thinking you have only your personality, only yourself to rely on, and wasting an awful lot of time and strength. On behalf of the School of Oracles, I thank you for being with me. Bye for now.

Before cutting the sheet in half for the top and bottom pieces of the bench, determine where the slots for the cubbies are going to go and mark them with a pencil and a straight edge. Use the baskets to help determine the size of the cubbies. 3. Use a router to make a dado cut along the marked lines. 4. Cut the MDF and half across the dado cut lines for the top and bottom pieces of the bench using the track saw. 5. Cut a few inches off the bottom piece of the bench. The top will have a slight overhang. 6. Cut the edges off each end of the dado cuts for the bottom piece so that they become rabbet cuts. 7. Pre-drill holes in the dados so that it’s easier to fasten everything at the end. 8. Using more of the MDF, cut the pieces for the sides, divider, and back of the bench to desired length and width. The track saw can be used for this, but a table saw is a little easier if you have one. 9. Before assembling the pieces, give everything a good sanding. 10. Assemble the pieces of the bench together with wood glue and wood screws. The dividers should go in the dado cuts and the sides and back should go in the rabbet cuts. Do one piece at a time, since the MDF will suck up the glue pretty quickly. 11. Measure and cut the pieces of the toe kick for the bench to rest on. Use a miter saw to miter the angles to assemble the box. 12. Cut filler pieces to go behind each piece of the toe kick. Connect those using wood glue and the brad nailer. 13. Assemble the toe kick with wood glue and brad nails. 14. Glue and nail another piece of MDF in the center of the toe kick for extra support for the bench. 15. Rest the bench on toe kick with more wood glue and brad nails. Resources: Tom likes MDF because it’s durable and it’s a fairly inexpensive material to work with. He pointed out that the big downside to MDF is that it doesn’t do well if it gets wet and it is also extremely heavy and will oftentimes require two people to work with it. It can be found at home centers. The top cushion is the Montlake Bench Cushion, manufactured by Classic Accessories (https://ift.tt/2qIHqjP). The baskets that Tom selected are the Rattique Storage Totes in Taupe, manufactured by Whitmor (https://whitmor.com/). The wood glue Tom used for the bench is manufactured by Gorilla Glue (https://ift.tt/2F2mNnD). The other tools and materials Tom and Kevin used to build the bench, including the track saw, sander, and sandpaper, can be found at home centers. Generation Next | How to Strip Wallpaper

Ask This Old House painter Mauro Henrique teaches apprentice Mary McGuire-Smith how to strip wallpaper without using any chemicals Click here to SUBSCRIBE to the official This Old House YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=thisoldhouse Time: 3-4 hours Cost: $50 Skill Level: Beginner Tools List for Stripping Wallpaper: Utility knife Putty knife Empty spray bottle Wallpaper scoring tool Flathead screwdriver Shopping List: Plastic drop cloths Painter’s tape Vinegar Ladder Sponge Steps: 1. This job requires working with a lot of water. To keep the mess down, start by protecting the floor with drop cloths. Use painter’s tape to secure the drop cloth directly to the wall. 2. Cover up any outlets on the wall with painter’s tape. Do not remove the cover as those can help protect the outlets from water. 3. Score the wallpaper around the outlet with the utility knife. A putty knife can help make the score marks straight. Those pieces of wallpaper will be removed last. 4. Start removing as much of the dry wallpaper as possible. Identify a seam in the wallpaper, slide the putty knife underneath it, and start peeling it off. Work slowly and as parallel to the wall as possible to get the most off in the dry passes. 5. Score whatever wallpaper remains on the wall with the wallpaper scoring tool to get underneath the wallpaper and closer to the paste holding it up. 6. In the spray bottle, mix hot water and vinegar together in a 50/50 proportion. Spray the mixture on the wallpaper. 7. Let the mixture sit on the wall for 5-10 minutes. It should deactivate the wallpaper paste so it can be scraped off with the putty knife. 8. Clean off the wall and any remaining wallpaper paste with the hot water/vinegar mixture and a sponge. 9. Once you’re done working with water, remove the painter’s tape around the outlets and remove the outlet covers with the screwdriver. 10. Scrape off the rest of the wallpaper around each outlet with the putty knife. 11. Put the cover plate back on the outlet. Resources: To remove wallpaper without using any chemicals, Mauro recommends using hot water and vinegar, which can be purchased at any grocery store. The other materials Mauro used to remove the wallpaper, including the putty knives, utility knife, and the wallpaper scoring tool can all be found at home centers and painting supply stores. I'm a clinical psychologist with a postgraduate degree in sex and family therapy. I have written a number of books, such as "Anatomy of Pleasure" and "The 30-Day Sex Solution." My interest lies in human relationship, love, sex, and dating. The reason I'm particularly interested in the arena of love, sex, and dating is because that's where human happiness lies. We are, as human beings, are social human beings, and our greatest potential for self-growth and self-actualization lies through other relationships, through relationships with other people, our ability to communicate, to relate and to maintain stable and healthy relatedness. I have appeared on numerous T.V. shows and had my own radio show called "The Sex Connection" on Sirius Satellite Radio. Currently, I have my own private practice at the Center for Positive Psychology. I particularly enjoy counseling couples because I find that the greatest strides in progress can be made in marital therapy. Indeed, sometimes I've seen that a single session can change the course of a relationship. I think one of the most important things to remember as a couple is that relationships are never effortless. People tell me all the time, "This shouldn't be so much work. It should be much easier." Well, it is work. Just like staying in shape is work. You don't expect to never exercise and eat everything you want and look great. Relationship requires same amount of effort. And the more effort you put in - the more attention, affection, and appreciation you show to your partner - the more likely you are to make it as a couple and the more lasting and satisfying your relationship will be.

How to Choose a New Toilet Seat

Ask This Old House plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey discusses the basics of choosing and installing toilet seats Click here to SUBSCRIBE to the official This Old House YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=thisoldhouse Cost: $15 and up Skill Level: Beginner Tools List for Choosing a Toilet Seat: Measuring tape Flathead screwdriver Socket wrench Hacksaw Putty knife Shopping List: Toilet seat Steps: 1. Start by measuring the length of the toilet seat. They come as either round seats at 16” or elongated at 18”. Be sure to buy the correct size seat. 2. Unscrew the bolts at the back of the toilet seat holding it in place and remove the old toilet seat. Depending on how old the toilet seat is, this may require a screwdriver if the screws are on top of the toilet. If they’re underneath, it’s safest to use a socket wrench to unscrew the bolts. 3. If the old bolts have become deformed and won’t loosen up, carefully cut them off with a hacksaw. It will be easier to cut them from the top. Place a putty knife underneath the saw to protect the china of the toilet from being scratched. 4. On the new toilet seat, place the holes on the back of the seat over the holes on the toilet. 5. Insert the screws that come with the toilet seat into the holes on the toilet. Put the nuts on the underside of the toilet. 6. Tighten the screws with a flathead screwdriver. Resources: Richard distinguishes between Round (16”) and Elongated (18”) toilet seats. Replacement seats must match the existing toilet seat. The seat with a potty training seat built in is the NextStep Children’s Toilet Seat, manufactured by Bemis Manufacturing Company (https://ift.tt/2RzbMAD). This is available at home centers. The elevated seat with grab bars is manufactured by Glacier Bay and is available at home centers. The artistic seats that Richard showed are available in many styles and can be found at online retailers. The high tech toilet seat with the bidet that Richard demonstrated is the Advanced Clean AC 2.0 Spalet Bidet Seat, manufactured by American Standard (https://ift.tt/2muc3Vo). 3 Main Types of Bread | Make Bread

Watch more How to Make Bread videos: https://ift.tt/2Qm31tt So there are different types of bread and different types of dough depending on what you want to use your bread for. The main category of bread falls into straight dough. A straight dough is basically a dough that doesn't have any fat in it. So a sourdough would be a straight dough or a baguette would be a straight dough. Straight dough is generally flour, water, salt and yeast. The next type of dough is called an enriched dough and that simply means that fat has been added to the dough, in some way or another to enrich it. So an enriched dough, an example would be a brioche where butter is added and eggs which also contain fat are added to the dough. Challah is another example of enriched dough. It's enriched with oil. The third type of dough is flat dough, like a flat bread or something that doesn't contain yeast, that is more like a cracker dough. Those are the three main types of dough.

Mason Mark McCullough shows Norm how he's repointing the old brick foundation with great care and a type N mortar that is slightly softer than the brick so it will give before the brick does. Then Norm and Tom repair the sagging front porch by jacking up the porch roof, replacing one of the rotted posts with a match from a local salvage yard, and then fastening the roof back to the house. Kevin visits Community Rowing on the Charles River to see how they make the Cambridge pastime of rowing available to everyone, including kids, disabled vets, and even general contractors. Back at our house, the historic porch railing is rotted and paint-caked, but the conservation district says we must replace it in kind, so Tom and Kevin re-build it out of 2x2 stock ripped down from 6x6s.
