Well, alcohol can affect your body in several ways. Even people who don't drink problematically can have some physical changes based on regular alcohol use. The typical change that people will usually think of is the beer gut, will be gaining weight. Alcohol makes one retain water, and people dehydrate, and then they bloat. So people will, you know, after an evening of drinking people may feel the next day bloated and be, in fact, bloated. With regular use people can develop an actual abdominal fat. With prolonged use then there can be more changes that go beyond cosmetic that can be harmful to you. Those can include different medical problems that involve different organ systems in your body; your heart, your liver, your stomach, your pancreas, and your kidneys. So there's a range effects of alcohol on your body, from very mild to moderate to severe.

How to Install a Water Saving Toilet

Shut the water off at the toilet. The shut off valve should be to the left of the toilet. 2. Flush the toilet to drain out as much water as possible. The rest can be removed with a sponge and a bucket. 3. Break the water connection from the hose to the toilet tank. It usually can be loosened with hands alone. 4. Use the open ended adjustable wrench to loosen the closet bolts on both sides of the toilet. Remove the nut and the washer. 5. Use the grips under the toilet to carefully lift the toilet straight up off the bolts. 6. Wearing gloves, remove the wax around the flange using a putty knife. 7. Check to ensure the closet flange is intact. Replace if it is broken. 8. Assemble the new toilet using brass tank bolts and the tank to bowl gasket, both of which should be included with the toilet. 9. Attach the new toilet seat to the bowl. 10. Insert new closet bolts into the flange. 11. Add a new wax ring to the flange. 12. Carefully put the new toilet back on the flange and push to set into the wax ring. 13. Add the toilet cap base to the closet bolts on both sides. 14. Put the washer and nut back on the closet bolts. Secure them on both sides with the open-ended adjustable wrench. Take turns securing each side and do not overtighten to prevent damaging the toilet. 15. Use the mini hacksaw to carefully cut the closet bolts close to the nut. 16. Add the toilet cap to the closet bolt. It should snap right into the cap base. 17. Hand tighten the water connection back to the toilet. 18. Turn the water back on. 19. Use caulking around the bottom of the toilet. Resources: Richard installed the Wellworth Dual-Flush toilet, manufactured by Kohler (https://ift.tt/2uklAI4). This empathy, or lack of understanding of the other, which is known as theory of mind, we see in children having difficulty with picking up on social cues and recognizing facial expressions for example. When they do or when they are able to understand it, it's not a lack of feeling that is there. They do have a tendency to take care of, but it's harder for them to pick on what the nuance is. What is interesting is there is recent research not just with pet therapy, where kids get more involved in caring when they have a pet dog or cat in their home, but also the use of Oxytocin, which is a hormone that is produced during breastfeeding with this experience of falling in love. Oxytocin was used with boys with Asperger’s, which is a kind of high functioning autism or where you have your speech and language and your I.Q. intact but difficulty with social connectedness or social empathy. And the use of Oxytocin in this small group of children actually increased their capacity to feel empathy, to feel warmth, to actually connect more with their peers. This is a small study but there is more research being done with the use of Oxytocin, because Oxytocin is released to increase empathy and caring and warmth. It is being studied with kids with Asperger’s, as well as with autism, and this is exciting research which I think holds promise.

There are a lot of different ways you might go about setting the classroom rules, but the big two are to tell the students what the rules are or to create the rules with the students, and of course, you can do a combination of those things as well. When you're setting the rules yourself, and you just want to tell the students what they are, pick five or six rules, make them super specific, and super observable. Be in your seat when the second bell rings. Don't talk while others are talking. Bring your materials to class everyday, and you can share that with the students. You can talk about it with them, but you're the one directing what the rules are. Another way to go out about it is to have the students design the rules with you during an activity, so you might give them a more kind of overarching idea like be respectful, be prepared, and be your best self, and then have them brainstorm what does that actually look like. If you were prepared, what it would look like? If you were being your best self, what would that look like? They can come up then with some observable things, and you can collect that information, and from there, create the classroom rules, getting rid of the ones that didn't seem right to you or you didn't want or you can't live with, and adding in ones may be none of them said but that you think are really important. From there, they will feel more invested maybe in how they follow the rules, because they had some hand in creating them. It's always nice to have the students have some hand in it for that reason, but it doesn't have to be that way, and it can be more of you saying "These are the rules, and this is how we're going to follow them," as long as the students feel like those rules are being equitably enforced by the teacher. So those are some ideas about setting rules.

How to Help Your Child Cope with Grief | Child Anxiety

No child should suffer depression and anxiety without help, seek professional help for you and your child and here’s some resources for educating yourself along the way: Freeing Your Child from Negative Thinking: http://amzn.to/1jOAGeu How To Get Unstuck From The Negative Muck: http://amzn.to/1Pj1b7O Depression and Your Child: A Guide for Parents and Caregivers: http://amzn.to/1LiG97G What to Do When You're Scared and Worried: A Guide for Kids: http://amzn.to/1jOAOuH What to Do When You Worry Too Much: A Kid's Guide to Overcoming Anxiety: http://amzn.to/1JThS2M Watch more How to Deal with Child Anxiety & Depression videos: http://ift.tt/2IshFfj I'm going to talk about how to help your child cope with grief. There's a few things to keep in mind when you're helping your child. One is their age. And their age determines both what they can understand, and how they're going to react. So very young children and infants really can't understand the idea that someone is never coming back. But by age 8 or 10, a child can really understand that somebody is gone, they're not coming back, their body doesn't work anymore, it could happen to anybody at any time, and of course, they could die or other people they really care about die. Now, in terms of their emotional reaction, again infants are reacting to changes around them, whereas toddlers are going to be showing more signs possibly of, again, there's change but they may have tantrums - regress to earlier behavior. And then you get school-age children and teenagers that understand everything, and they will look more traditionally sad or withdrawn, possibly, or upset. Or then they may have feelings that are so difficult, that they go underground and they're quiet about them, as opposed to acting out and angry about them. Children's grief reactions often show up in their thoughts in terms of things that they might be worried about, things that they're concerned about, their feelings in terms of their sadness, maybe feeling not so positive inside, and that may show up as stomach aches and other kinds of headaches and somatic complaints. And their behaviors - they may act out. They may, again, have tantrums or be clingy or withdrawn. One of the first things to do to help a grieving child is to make sure that you talk to them and give them clear and honest and age-appropriate information that they can understand. Because you want to make sure that they have the real facts, and it's from you. Because when things are kept a secret, it makes them often feel more worried and use their imagination. And their imagination is often more scary. So you want them to know they can come to you to get the information, and that they can trust you. You also want to show them that you will take care of them, and you do that by reassuring them, but also by making their life go back to normal in whatever way possible in terms of their routines, going back to school, come of their usual activities. Have them be with people that are familiar to them and comforting to them. You also want to make sure you stay connected to each other, and also always stay connected to that person who has died as a way of keeping them and their presence in your life. One thing to keep an eye out for is children that may be having a difficult reaction. And sometimes, that might be a child that's more depressed or anxious than we expect, and is having a hard time getting past that, or knowing how to cope with those sad and anxious feelings. It's not that they have to be happy, but for someone reason, but for some reason they seem to be more stuck and it's going on for an extended period of time and it's interfering with their life. And some children may have what we call a "traumatic reaction" to a death, and that's where they perceive it as difficult. Perhaps it was shocking or sudden, and they have a reaction where they may be overwhelmed. They may re-experience that death. They may have a hard time getting those thoughts out of their mind. They may be on overdrive in terms of being overly-alert and aroused and worried physically about what's going to happen, and be on edge. Click here to SUBSCRIBE to the official This Old House YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=thisoldhouse Time: 3-4 hours Cost: $50 Skill Level: Moderate Tools List for Resizing an Exterior Door: Measuring tape Hammer Pencil Track saw Block plane Paint brush Table saw Grinder Chisel Brad nailer Shopping List: Medium grit sandpaper Primer 1x6” red oak Stain Rags Wood glue Headless brad nails Steps: 1. Take the door off the hinges. 2. Mark the bottom of the door about ¼” and cut it with a track saw. Sand the edges of the door a little bit and ease the edges with a block plane. 3. Prime the bottom of the door with some paint and a paintbrush to protect the raw wood. 4. Rehang the door. 5. Measure the gap between threshold and the door on both sides. 6. Cut the red oak to size based on the measurements between the door and the threshold using a table saw. This will become a filler piece for the threshold. 7. Grind off any finishes on the top of the threshold. Use a chisel to get the varnish out of the corners between the threshold and the jamb. 8. Place the filler piece on top of the threshold and close the door to ensure it fits properly. Then, mark where the edge of the door lands on the filler piece and mark it with a pencil. 9. Bevel the edges of the filler piece on the table saw. 10. Stain the piece and let it dry. 11. Secure the filler piece to the threshold with wood glue and brad nails. Resources: To cut the bottom of the door, Tom uses a circular saw that rides on a track, known as a track saw, which can be purchased at the local home center. By using the track, it protects the finish of the door and speeds up the cutting process. What people often aren't aware of, is that cigarette smoking prevents proper wound healing and it also increases the risk of almost every potential complication within the field of plastic surgery. There are certain procedures that I will absolutely not perform  on a smoker, because the risk of complications is too high. For example, a breast reduction is not a good operation to perform on a smoker, because the blood supply to the nipple could be compromised and the nipple could actually not survive. In addition, a face-lift is another procedure where the blood supply is significantly compromised  and significant wound healing complications are possible in the presence of cigarette smoke. So, the nicotine in the cigarette  smoke causes constriction of blood vessels, decreased blood flow to the skin, and poor wound healing. So, there can be no nicotine in the blood of a plastic surgery patient, if one wants to decrease the risk of after surgery wound healing complications as much as possible. So for some procedures, smoking is tolerated , however, for most procedures, it increases the risk of complications exponentially and smoking should be stopped at least one month before surgery and non-smoking should be continued at least one month after surgery. In addition, second-hand smoke counts as smoking as well so plastic surgery patients  should stay away from their own cigarette smoking, but second-hand smoke as well.

So it's a little different from the regular lunge. You're going to step your foot behind instead of straight back as in a traditional lunge. So start with one foot forward, you're going to take the back leg and take it all the way behind that front leg. It's going to feel a little awkward, but just for the sake of your sexy butt. So shoulders back, chest up, you come straight down in that lunge, you're going to really feel this throughout the back of the leg and the front, and that butt, also the inner thighs are going to work here, so all of that goodness is going on. And it comes straight down, and then up. Same thing other side, you're going to take that leg all the way back, come straight down in that lunge and up. So I'll show you from this way, make sure you keep that leg forward, it's stable, all the way it stays in that heel. Always remember, keep the weight loaded in the heel. So you step the one leg behind, shift that weight all the way back so you sit straight down in that lunge, you're not leaning forward this way, because then you lose all of the power from your butt here. Sit back, and then push it up, sit back, and then push it on up. So you can alternate from side to side, do right and left, or you can just stay on one side, do about ten on one side and then ten on the other side, it's up to you. If you want more of like that calorie burn, alternating from left to right, and picking up the pace a little bit, it's going to get that heart rate going a little bit more, and definitely going to be more of a little cardio exercise. So that's how you do the curtsy lunge for a sexy butt.

How to Treat Disease with Citrus Trees

Watch the full episode: http://ift.tt/2trcyIF Ask This Old House landscape contractor Roger Cook helps a homeowner treat a citrus tree that’s been affected by citrus greening Click here to SUBSCRIBE to the official This Old House YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=thisoldhouse Time: 1-2 hours Cost: $50 Skill Level: Beginner Tools List for Treating Disease in Citrus Trees: Shovel 5 gallon bucket Tube sock Paint mixer Hose sprayer Shopping List: Fertilizer Plant Sugar Compost Fish tank pump Molasses Organic pesticide Steps: 1. To identify if a citrus tree is diseased, check the fruit and the leaves of the tree. Small, green fruits indicate that the tree isn’t receiving proper nutrients. Pinched leaves indicate that psyllids have been feeding off the tree and spreading disease. 2. Check the root tips. If the roots are brown, they should be cut off to allow for new root growth. Take a shovel and cut down 4-6” around the base of the tree at the dripline to do this. 3. Spread a layer of fertilizer around the base of the tree to help nourish the roots. 4. Sprinkle the plant sugar on top of the fertilize to stimulate the microbes in the fertilizer. 5. Make compost tea to coat the leaves of the tree. Fill the bucket a little more than halfway with water. Then, take a sock and fill it with compost. Tie the sock closed and stick it in the bucket of water. 6. Stick the fish tank pump tube into the water and leave the pump out of the bucket to aerate the tea. Allow the tea to brew for 24 hours. 7. Add a cup of molasses to the tea to feed the microbes in the tea. 8. Use the paint mixer to mix the molasses into the tea. 9. Scoop out some of the compost tea and connect it to the hose sprayer. Spray the tea onto the tree leaves. 10. Apply an organic pesticide to prevent psyllids from returning to spread disease without deterring helpful insects, like bees, from the trees. Resources: Roger visited a commercial orange grove to learn about Citrus Greening, or Huanglongbing, a disease that's killing citrus trees across the state. Roger and Benny McLean, a citrus expert, then presented an organic solution to prolonging the life of a diseased backyard orange tree. Citrus greening is spread by an insect called a psyllid. Applying neem oil, a botanical oil available at garden centers, will smother the eggs of the psyllid to help control the population. Citrus greening also prevents the transportation of nutrients from the soil to the tree. Benny did some root pruning with a shovel and applied composted cow manure to the root zone. He also sprayed a compost tea onto the foliage. While this method, the life of the tree can be prolonged, but the disease is still fatal. How to Replace a Vinyl Floor with Ceramic Tile

Watch the full episode: http://ift.tt/2trcyIF Ask This Old House general contractor Tom Silva helps a homeowner replace the peeling, vinyl floor in his bathroom with a ceramic tile floor Click here to SUBSCRIBE to the official This Old House YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=thisoldhouse Time: 2 days Cost: $200 Skill Level: Moderate Tools List for Replacing a Vinyl Floor with Ceramic Tile: Open ended adjustable wrench Utility knife Pry bar Hammer Putty knife Jigsaw Carbide tip knife Notched trowel Drill driver Wet saw Rubber float Sponge Bucket Shopping List: Tiles Cement board Thinset mortar 1 ¼” cement screws Mesh tape Grout Steps: 1. Before getting started, all the appliances need to be removed. Disconnect and remove any sinks, vanities (http://ift.tt/2tAT9Fw ), and toilets (http://ift.tt/2p05GNG ) in the bathroom. Loosen the flange and hold it up with spacers if possible. 2. Next, remove any baseboard trim with the pry bar. 3. Once the floor is clear, peel off the vinyl tiles with a putty knife. With the floor up, now is good opportunity to ensure the subfloor is properly secured. 4. Add cement board to the subfloor to act as a base for the tiles. Cut it to size by scoring it with the carbide tip knife and snapping it, similar to drywall. 5. Apply the thinset to the floor using the notched trowel. 6. Secure the cement board to the floor using the cement screws about 8” apart. Make sure the cement board goes underneath the toilet flange. Cover the seams between the cement board with mesh tape. 7. Dry fit the tiles to see how they will fit in the room. Measure and mark tiles that need to be cut. 8. Cut the tiles using a wet saw. 9. Apply thinset to the cement board using the notched trowel and lay the tiles on the floor. Nippers can be used to cut around the flange. Allow the thinset to cure for 24 hours. 10. Grout the tile after 24 hours. 11. Reinstall the vanity and toilet. Resources: Tom chose a mosaic 12x12 inch tile with mesh backing from Daltile (https://www.daltile.com ). For the subfloor, he used ¼ inch Wonderboard lite cement board underlayment. For mortar, Tom used versabond thinset. To trim the bottom of the casings, Tom used an osculating saw available at Home Depot (http://ift.tt/2Dgh7oJ ). All of these materials can be purchased at a home center. How to Deal with an Autism Diagnosis | Autism

Some parents have the most dreaded fear of the A-word. They go, "I don't want to hear the word 'Autism'," and yet sometimes, it can also be a bit of a relief, because you're describing your child. And I think it's important to not get to getting fixated on the diagnostic labeling and understand that this is a label being given to your child based on certain diagnostic criteria and also to help your child get more services, to help physicians and practitioners communicate and understand what are the issues. Your child is your child. It doesn't change that. We're just putting a label or diagnosis to help understand the symptoms that your child is suffering from, and that has brought you here for this evaluation. And I think keeping that perspective that diagnosis is man-made, that this is your child, and yet it is often a relief to a parent, because they are describing something that they have seen with their child, and to have it understood by a physician or professional is at times a relief. Between parents there can be a dispute. There's one who's a minimizer and one who's just in denial and has a real difficulty in diagnosis, so it's important to have both parents there. I would particularly recommend that when dealing with a diagnosis like that, then getting the family involved. One of the next steps that is so important is to get more information and to pace yourself. And parents often get onto the websites, they go on looking at parent groups and blogs, and you can get some information but some misinformation. So it's important to follow up with your diagnostic physician or the team that is involved in the care of your child. If you've come to your specialist, go back to your primary physician. Make sure you get yourself some support, and always remember, this is not a sprint. It's a marathon. You're going to have to do things in stages and take a breath and take care of yourself, because you are the one taking care of your child. You are the strongest advocate. You are the caretaker, and these are the things I strongly support families with, that this is a diagnosis that can be worked with. There's a lot more information that we have. You can actually use that diagnosis and the recommendations given by the diagnosing physician to get more services. It can help you in the process of early intervention. It will help you get more services in schools, as well as in the home. For example, early intervention provides both center-based and home-based. So you take that diagnosis and take a deep breath and you make a strategy. And you look at educational treatments, behavioral, "Have I done the whole evaluation firstly?", so that pieces that fit that need to be broken up so you can digest it or work on them, doing a thorough evaluation, "What else needs to be done for my child?" whether it's genetic testing or whether it's an occupational therapy evaluation, or whether I need to get more blood test done for any deficiencies, etc, or whether there's some food intolerances. Then there's the therapeutic educational behavior of peace that needs to be there, and then the piece of taking care of yourself and helping the family, the sibling, the grandparents who are in denial, just working with that and giving yourself the support and creating a community is very important because this is a heavy diagnosis. But it's a diagnosis which also gives you tools and gives you hope to do stuff. And it's important sometimes you have a diagnosis versus not having a diagnosis and to be denying a problem that your child may be having.

3 Types of Alcohol-Related Liver Disease | Alcoholism

Alcoholism is disease, here’s some resources to help you fight back: Responsible Drinking: A Moderation Management Approach http://amzn.to/1ZdgP9f I Need to Stop Drinking!: How to get back your self-respect. http://amzn.to/1VEqbeU Why You Drink and How to Stop: A Journey to Freedom: http://amzn.to/1Q8pAv2 Alcoholics Anonymous: The Big Book: http://amzn.to/1N0rttl Alcoholics: Dealing With an Alcoholic Family Member, Friend or Someone You Love: http://amzn.to/1j9cvH4 Watch more How to Understand Alcoholism videos: http://ift.tt/2Hel1AX People often wonder about the medical effects of chronic alcohol use, particularly the effects on the liver. There's really three types of liver disease that can result from heavy alcohol use. The mildest form is called fatty liver disease. In that case, what happens with the chronic alcohol use is that the liver develops fatty cells that replace the healthier cells. And those fatty cells don't process the alcohol and other things that the liver processes. So your liver slows down in its ability to process. The next form of alcohol related liver disease is alcohol related hepatitis. And that's where the liver becomes inflamed chronically and often enlarged. And, again, it's not functioning at its full capacity. Alcohol hepatitis, in its mildest forms, can be reversed when you stop drinking. In its more severe forms, it cannot be reversed and becomes a chronic illness. Often people experience chronic nausea and other symptoms that really interfere with their lives. The most serious form of alcohol related liver disease is liver cirrhosis. Liver cirrhosis is where the liver actually develops hard scar tissue that replaces the healthy liver tissue. So over time, if one keeps drinking, that more and more scar tissue develops resulting eventually in liver failure. And the need for a liver transplant. So those are the three types of liver disease that can result from serious alcohol use.

How to Use Yeast & Leaven | Make Bread

Watch more How to Make Bread videos: http://ift.tt/2FkBfb6 So there are different types of yeast. There's commercial yeast and there's natural yeast. There's basically yeast all around us, and you can use a variety of different yeasts and leavening's for your bread dough. The most commonly known yeasts that everyone is familiar with is commercial bread yeast, at least that is in bread making, and so commercial bread yeast, there are basically three different types of yeast. There's instant yeast, also called rapid rise yeast. There's active dry yeast and there's fresh yeast. When you're converting fresh yeast to instant yeast, the basic difference is that instant yeast is coated in dead yeast cells that need to be dissolved and then the active yeast is inside each granule. You don't necessarily need to dissolve the yeast in water for it to be active. It will dissolve in your dough over a period of time. Fresh yeast basically has water in it. It's not dehydrated like instant yeast or active dry yeast is, so when you're converting between the two there's more water in fresh yeast, so there's more volume in fresh yeast. So you basically want to divide the fresh yeast by three, to get the instant yeast weight, if you're converting between the two. That's just a very brief explanation on what the differences are between all the different types of commercial yeast. And then there's something called sourdough starter also called leaven or natural leaven, and what that is, is that's basically the natural yeast in your environment that have been trapped in a culture of flour and water, and those natural yeasts need to continue and to grow. So you must constantly feed them with flour and water in basically, a sourdough culture. So any time you see a bread that's calling for a sourdough starter, that itself is a yeast. That's a leavening. The only difference is, is that there's already flour and water in that leavening, and so your formula your bread recipe needs to be adjusted to account for the fact that you're using the yeast in a different form. That's just a very brief explanation on the different types of yeast and leavening that you'll find when you're making bread at home.

Click here to SUBSCRIBE to the official This Old House YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=thisoldhouse Time: 4 hours Cost: $200-300 Skill Level: Beginner Shopping List: Two 5”x5” pressure treated posts Two gate sections and hardware Fast-setting concrete Tools List for Installing a Fence Gate: Post hole digger Iron digging bar 4’ Level Wheelbarrow Shovel Scrap boards Drill/driver Steps: 1. Drive the post hole digger into the ground, separate the handles, and set aside any soil the digger collects. Do this until you have two holes each about 30” deep. 2. If objects like a brick or rock are encountered that the post hole digger can’t remove, an iron digging bar can help loosen the object. 3. When the hole is close to the desired depth, the round end of the digging bar can be used to compact the soil in the hole to its final level. 4. Use the level to ensure the post is plumb in both directions. 5. Fill the hole with a few inches of soil to hold the post plumb. Use the round end of the digging bar to compact that soil. 6. Mix the concrete in the wheelbarrow with a little bit of water. Ensure the water is spread evenly throughout the mix, but don’t let the mix get too wet. 7. Fill around the post evenly with concrete until the concrete is 3” below grade. A piece of scrap wood can be used to compact the concrete and remove air bubbles. 8. When setting the second post, use a board and the level to ensure both post heights are the same. 9. Once the post is plumb, use a scrap board the width of the finished gate as a spacer to keep the correct distance between both posts. 10. Predrill and then attach the hinges to the gate sections. 11. Predrill and attach the hinges to the posts using lag screws. 12. Attach locking hardware and drop rod to the gate. Should You Let Kid Quit Hobby or Sport? | Child Anxiety

No child should suffer depression and anxiety without help, seek professional help for you and your child and here’s some resources for educating yourself along the way: Freeing Your Child from Negative Thinking: http://amzn.to/1jOAGeu How To Get Unstuck From The Negative Muck: http://amzn.to/1Pj1b7O Depression and Your Child: A Guide for Parents and Caregivers: http://amzn.to/1LiG97G What to Do When You're Scared and Worried: A Guide for Kids: http://amzn.to/1jOAOuH What to Do When You Worry Too Much: A Kid's Guide to Overcoming Anxiety: http://amzn.to/1JThS2M Watch more How to Deal with Child Anxiety & Depression videos: http://ift.tt/2oKqyrj We're going to talk about should you let your child quit a hobby or sport. Now, if you're having that question right now it means that either you are thinking there's a problem with it or your child is somehow behaving or talking like there's a problem with their hobby or sport. So the first thing is you got to do your basic collection of information and find out what's going on, why does your child want to give something up or why is maybe there's some advice out there that they are not best suited for this or should give it up. Often it comes from the child, maybe they're arguing, they're skipping the activity, they're not happy about it afterwards so you want to figure out why. Is it the wrong fit for your child? Is it that something is happening in that activity that needs to be addressed and corrected. Maybe there is some child there that's in the activity that's being problematic for your child. Or maybe it's the adult supervision or a coach that is somehow making it unpleasant or difficult for your child, because a lot of times it's a fit between the activity, your child and whatever that particular coach or environment is. If you come to the conclusion that it's really maybe a bad time, your child's overloaded, they've lost interest in what they're doing, then you need to come up with a plan for if it's okay to quit. So, if it's taking a toll on them emotionally, if it's taking a toll on other parts of their life, interfering with school or sleep or they're just not happy now that they've tried it, then it may be okay to let them give it up. But you want to have a plan for giving it up. You want to talk to whoever it is in charge, whether it's the dance teacher, or the soccer coach, and what's a good way to stop an activity because you want your child to realize that you take something on, you're responsible for it, but certainly things can change but there's a responsible grownup way to manage that as well. So then you can have the plan. Now, if it's something that this child really wanted to do and there was a lot of time and maybe money involved, you want to think about if there's some other kinds of things that you want to put in place for that, and maybe that they're quitting and they now don't have free time is that they're going to do something else productive with that time. It's one thing for a child to say, "I don't want to go anywhere and I want to sit home and play videogames." Maybe that wasn't what you had in mind. It's a different kind of inactivity. They're going to be reading or they are going to be engaged in something else that's creative or something athletic. So, again, think about the form of the activity may not be right but maybe you need to replace it with something else that's productive or just fun for your child, rather than just saying we're going to give it up and pack it in.
