The first thing I wold say is find a trusted colleague, find somebody else who is working on the campus that you're working on, and ask them what the most important things are to know, and if they don't know there are lots of resources out there that can help you figure out what questions you want to ask, and what you want to do. For example, on our website at ConsciousTeaching.com in the free resources tab, we have something called the before school checklist. This is like 77 questions every teacher should know the answer to before school starts. So you don't necessarily need to find the answer to all 77 questions, but it gives you an idea of the kinds of information it would be helpful to have, and the more of that information you can gather before school starts, the more relaxed you're going to feel, and the more prepared you're going to feel. I would also say for your first couple of days of school over plan. Over plan the amount of information or the content or the activities that you want, because sometimes in our nervousness in the first couple of days of school, we end up going a lot faster than we thought we're going to go, and then you had what you thought was a 50 minute lesson plan takes 20 minutes, and them what do you do for the rest of that time. So, over plan and have a couple of quick activities, things that you can just grab if you need to fill in sometime you didn't know that you're going to have. And lastly, tell your family and your friends you're not going to be available until winter break, because the beginning of the school year is nonstop, so just be prepared to not see anybody until December.
