How to Choose the Right Fertilizer

Ask This Old House landscape contractor Roger Cook walks host Kevin O’Connor through the choices in fertilizers CORRECTION: Roger misstates the functions of Potassium and Posphorous in this video. Potassium helps with chemical reactions and Phosphorous helps with root growth. Click here to SUBSCRIBE to the official This Old House YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=thisoldhouse Cost: $15 and Up Skill Level: Beginner Shopping List: Soil Test Fertilizer Steps: 1. A soil test will determine what nutrients are lacking in your soil and need to be augmented. 2. Follow all manufacturer’s instructions to ensure plants are overly fertilized and susceptible to burning. 3. The three main nutrients a plant needs are Nitrogen, Phosphorous, and Potassium, and these are noted as ratios on fertilizer containers. 4. Nitrogen-heavy fertilizers encourage green top growth on lawns. 5. Phosphorous-heavy fertilizers help with root growth (this is mis-stated in the video). 6. Potassium-heavy fertilizers help with chemical reactions (this is mis-stated in the video). 7. Liquid based fertilizers are good for establishing planters like a window box because they work quickly, then a granular slow-release fertilizer can be used over time. 8. Organic fertilizers have less nutrient density and are better for slow release applications like trees and shrubs. Resources: Fertilizer can be found at garden centers or home centers. How to Read the 4 Queens | Tarot Cards

Unlock the mysteries of Tarot: The Complete Guide to the Tarot: http://amzn.to/1Pj0Div The Tarot Bible: The Definitive Guide to the Cards: http://amzn.to/1LlxTzz Chakra Wisdom Oracle Cards: http://amzn.to/1hrj3zE The Essential Tarot Kit: Book and Card Set: http://amzn.to/1ZdkUu5 The Rider Tarot Deck Cards: http://amzn.to/1OmCOXQ Watch more How to Read Tarot Cards videos: https://ift.tt/2MZ0Z3Z Hello, I’m Ellen Goldberg and I welcome you to this tarot moment from the School of Oracles.  In this segment we are going to take a brief overview of the four queens of the minor arcana court cards.  All queens belong to the realm of bena [SP], the Great Mother.  They all are subconscious cards and because they are feminine all of them are water.  Water plus the element of their suit.  The Queen of Wands, she's fire and water, so there's a built in conflict as water and fire are anemical.  But she is a fine woman in fact each of the queens is best at something and she is the best witch in the deck because the fire gives passion and energy to the water and the water is the power of the subconscious and so she can make things manifest.  In fact her key phrase is, "expectations manifest".  When she's in her higher polarity she's kind, generous and capable.  She's the best business woman in the deck, look at her little black cat.  That's not exactly like the lion in the strength card, but it might be reminiscent of it because she is strong.  Her flowery, her crown, has flowers, leaves coming out of the top.  She's full of ideas.  She, and all the queens are the cardinal form of their element.   The Queen of Wands belongs to primarily to Aries, so she's one-third the last bit of Pisces and two-thirds Aries and if you look below you'll see the exact dates.  You can use her as your significator whether you are a man, a woman or whatever age you are.  Remember, expectations manifest and what you expect, you get.  Here's another hint, since all the queens belong to the Bena [SP], they have something in common with the three's of their suit and if your at a loss for a meaning check the corresponding three of the same suit and see.  That's where I got the saying, "expectations manifest", comes from the Three of Wands.  The Queen of Cups is water plus water, since all queens are water and all cups are water you can imagine that this makes her the best telepathic sender and receiver of all the queens.  She's psychic, she's imaginative, she's beautiful.  She looks at a cup and people wonder, "what is on that cup?"  Well, look carefully, there is no other cup like it in the deck.  Those are not crab claws, those are two angels on either side of the cup in profile.  She sits at the waters edge, a very magical place for interacting with the imagination and psychic ability.  When she's on her lower polarity she may be colorless and you wonder if there is a core there at all and is she's just reflecting you back, or she may have a closed channel.   She is Cardinal Water, so she is two-thirds Cancer.  For the exact date she covers see below.  The Queen of Swords, she always reminds me of a minor arcana version of the Justice card.  She is Cardinal Air, therefore her main, uh, sign two-thirds is Libra, but you will see the exact dates here below. She sits poised for action, and her key phrase is, "every action is a choice" and that includes thoughts as well as actions.  We are who we have decided to make ourselves, who we believe ourselves to be.  On the higher polarity she makes just decisions.  Look at what a clear thinker she is.  Her head is drawn above the clouds, indicating clarity and as the queen, water, and swords, air, she has use of all parts of the mind, both the conscious and the subconscious.  When she is on her lower polarity she can be very cold and she is capable of using that sword to sever the head from the heart.  The Queen of Pentacles is Cardinal Earth.  Her key phrase is, "playing the hand you've been dealt".   This woman can go further on less than any one else in the deck and she'll work her fingers to the bone for you if you're one of her brood.  But, she manages.  Cardinal Earth is Capricorn and they are hard working.  For the exact dates that she covers see below.  When she's on her higher polarity, she makes things work, things that no one else could believe that could happen she'll make them happen.  And on the lower polarity she may turn herself into a drudge.  Her key phrase, "playing the hand you've been dealt" means she'll make due, but on the lower polarity she may cheat or not be able to play the hand at all.

Kevin and Tommy revisit the 2005 Cambridge modern house.

In honor of our 40th anniversary season, Kevin and Tommy will present a live social media event featuring a “behind the scenes” of our 2005 Cambridge Modern project. They’ll discuss the changes Tommy’s crew made to a house that was literally falling apart and recall the major challenges throughout the renovation. The Cambridge Modern house was the ugly duckling; a dark box with vertical siding amidst a neighborhood full of beautiful Victorians. Through the careful architectural design process of adding square footage on an already tight lot, as well as extensive repair to the tired and outdated existing structure, the team was able to create bright and open living spaces that transformed the home from dated retro to inspired modern.

Click here to SUBSCRIBE to the official This Old House YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=thisoldhouse Cost: $5 and Up Skill Level: Beginner Shopping List: Over the Ear Protection In Ear Foam Plugs Steps: 1. Hearing loss affects 30 million US adults and the damage is cumulative. 2. Exposure to sounds over 85 dB is considered harmful. 3. A good rule of thumb is if you need to shout to talk to someone standing at arm’s length, you should be wearing hearing protection. 4. Ear muffs block out mid frequency sounds like general shop noise, but they don’t do as well with low frequency sounds. 5. Foam ear plugs will block both mid and low frequency sounds. 6. Foam ear plugs should be rolled in the finger to be compressed, then tug on your ear, and place the plug into your ear canal to let it expand. 7. Keep hearing protection in a convenient spot so you’re more likely to reach for it. Unlock the mysteries of Tarot: The Complete Guide to the Tarot: http://amzn.to/1Pj0Div The Tarot Bible: The Definitive Guide to the Cards: http://amzn.to/1LlxTzz Chakra Wisdom Oracle Cards: http://amzn.to/1hrj3zE The Essential Tarot Kit: Book and Card Set: http://amzn.to/1ZdkUu5 The Rider Tarot Deck Cards: http://amzn.to/1OmCOXQ Watch more How to Read Tarot Cards videos: https://ift.tt/2L9gy4l Hello.  I'm Ellen Goldberg, and I welcome you to this Tarot Moment from the School of Oracles.  In this segment, we're gonna look at the four knights of the four suits.  The knights are also on the Tree of Life.  All of the court cards are on the Tree of Life, just like the ace through 10 cards are.  The knights belong in hokma.  Now you'll see that other authorities disagree.  Some say they belong other places.  Some, well, don't even put them on the tree at all.  But the knights are a self-conscious card and they are at the top of the fire pillar, and so all knights are fire. They also are the mutable signs of the zodiac, or at least two thirds of their essence is the mutable sign, and they also have one third of whatever sign comes before that.  For instance, the Knights of Wands, since all wands are fire and all knights are fire, he is a very fiery fellow, and you can see that they knew this quite well in the Golden Dawn because of the fiery horse that he's on, a red horse, flames coming out of his armor, and even his plume on his helment is like fire.  In other words, this person has a lot of enthusiasm. He is two thirds Sagittarius, the fire sign that is mutable.  Why are the knights mutable?  Well, they are moving.  All the knights are on horses, and they represent the tendency of matter to change and move. You'll see that on his cloak he wears, that there are salamanders, which is the totem symbol for all fire court cards.  It is the only animal that in mythology can live through fire, and you'll see salamanders in just about every fire court card, somewhere.  His key phrase is the impulse to freedom, when he is high and dignified he does this through yearning, through learning, and in a very positive way.  When he's on his lower polarity, it's escapism.  If you're going to use him as a significator, please see the dates below.  He is one thirds Scorpio and two thirds Sagittarius, and this helps to give him part of his character. The Knight of cups is fire, because all knights are fire, and all cups are water, and you see that fire and water don't always mix well inside somebody, so there's going to be some internal conflict here, and yet he has the wings of imagination coming off his helmet.  You see the fish on his cloak that he wears, and the wings, again, of imagination are on his shoes.  This is an inspired person.  His key phrase is seeking self-fulfillment.  When it's positive, he yearns to fill himself up creatively with love, with spirituality, but when he is on his lower polarity he is a dilettante, and he goes sensation mongering, and seeks to fill himself up with anything he can, whether it's over sensualizing life or using substances. Sometimes this card represents a longed for lover, because he is a knight in shining armor, and cups are the emotional suit.  When he's on the higher polarity, he may be a lover coming towards you.  When he's on the lower polarity he may be exiting. If you're going to use the Knight of Cups as a significator, see the dates below, but remember, he is two thirds of the mutable water, so he is two thirds Pisces, and that has an awful lot to do with his personality. The Knight of Swords, look how he charges forward.  His key phrase is curiosity, and he represents the ravenous and searching mind.  The clouds in the background show with what eagerness he is.  Wait called him a Sir Galahad, and certainly he charges forward.  He wears, in his cap, the feather of truth, that we see that the fool wears also.  This feather, it relates to the Egyptian goddess of justice, Maat.  If you're going to use the Knight of Swords as your significator, remember that he is two thirds of the sign of Gemini, which is mutable, air, and he is the ravenous, curious mind.  In his most positive form there's a yearning to learn.  In his negative firm he's all over the place, and maybe has self-destructive curiosity, or maybe he's using the mind incorrectly. Since all knights are fire and all swords are air, that combination of fire behind the mind, behind the air, mental element, means the mind is on fire.  Crowley called him "the wind in the tempest," the idea of attack, and you see he goes forth bravely. Our last knight is the Knight of Pentacles.  He is very solid.  The horse he rides is dark and solid and heavy, and in the ba

How to Patch a Plaster and Lathe Ceiling

Ask This Old House general contractor Tom Silva helps a homeowner repair a cracked plaster ceiling in an older home. Click here to SUBSCRIBE to the official This Old House YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=thisoldhouse Cost: $200-300 Skill Level: Moderate Tools List for Patching a Plaster Ceiling: Drill/Driver Putty Knife Mixing Paddle Bit Hawk Trowel Shopping List: Staging Drop Cloths 1x3 strapping 3” screws Drywall Screws Plaster Washers 3/8” Drywall Veneer Plaster Joint Compound Fiberglass Screen Felt Pad Steps: 1. When originally installed, wood lathe was nailed to the ceiling joists. Plaster mixed with horse hair or goat hair was then forced onto the lathe, forming a key that holds it to the lathe. 2. One option is to cut out the damaged area and install a 3⁄8” thick sheet of blue board and plaster. 3. Cover the work area with drop cloths and work off of a rolling scaffolding platform, which can be rented or purchased. 4. Use a drill/driver to secure a piece of 1x3 strapping to the structure above the ceiling. Repeat this process several times in the area of the cracks. 5. For areas where there is no structure above, attach a piece of strapping perpendicular to the others and insert filler pieces of strapping in the gaps between the strapping. Slowly tighten the perpendicular piece. 6. Use a drywall screw with a plaster washer to resecure the damaged sections of plaster to the lathe. 7. Remove the strapping. 8. For areas where the washers don’t hold or the plaster is very damaged, cut out the plaster and create a patch using drywall. Secure the patch with 1 5⁄8” drywall screws. 9. Scrape away any loose veneer. 10. Mix a batch of plaster and joint compound to ensure good adhesion. 11. Place the plaster mix on a hawk and trowel it over the damaged areas. 12. To keep the plaster from cracking and to hide the screws, set a fiberglass screen into the first coat of plaster. 13. After the first coat sets, apply a second coat, filling any voids. 14. Use a felt pad to finish the job and smooth out the ceiling. Resources: The ceiling washers, drywall board, plaster, joint compound, fiberglass window screen, trowel, 13x13 inch magnesium hawk, and felt pad brush can be found at home centers and hardware stores. How to Install a Whole-House Ductless System

Ask This Old House plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey shows a style of ductless heat pump that can be used to heat and cool an entire house. Click here to SUBSCRIBE to the official This Old House YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=thisoldhouse Time: 1-2 days Cost: $10,000 and Up Skill Level: Professional Steps: 1. Installing a whole house heat pump is best left to a professional contractor. The contractor should run a heat load calculation to determine the correct sizing of the overall system. 2. A wall-mounted ductless heat pump is a good solution for open areas like entertaining areas, bonus rooms, or open floor plans. 3. Outdoor units can be sized to accommodate multiple zones of heating and cooling. 4. In snowy climates, the outdoor unit should be mounted above the snow line. 5. Refrigerant tubing connects the outdoor unit to the indoor units via a branch box which can connect 5 indoor units with individual refrigerant lines. 6. Ductless units can be attached to duct work to feed conditioned air into the living space. Each unit requires two refrigerant connections, a drain line to remove condensate, a supply duct to bring conditioned air to the living space, and a return duct to bring the air back to be heated or cooled. 7. Each zone has its own programmable thermostat. Resources: All of the heating and cooling equipment, including the outdoor condenser, indoor wall-mounted unit, and indoor air handlers are manufactured by Mitsubishi Electric Cooling & Heat (https://ift.tt/2ySjhcW). I mean, it is clear that when it comes to homosexual populations, there is definitely less monogamy in a relationship; however, perhaps more honesty. A lot of gay relationships have a lot of outside partners, and it's something that is very acceptable. Many gay relationships are negotiated in such a way as to allow such outside contact. Of course, cheating is also very prevalent as well in homosexual relationships. It seems that lesbian women tend to be more monogamous, whereas gay men tend to have more sexual partners and more variety of sexual encounters. And of course this is all due to the same big "T," testosterone. Men have about a hundred times more testosterone than women do on average. So, it's only natural that men have more sexual thoughts, sexual fantasies, sexual desires and urges. So, when we are looking at the homosexual population, it's only natural that two men together will have more desire for outside sexual contact than two women together that tend to get kind of complacent sexually, which is known as actually lesbian bed death, meaning that over time, two lesbian women together tend to have less sex than two gay men together.

To ask for one coffee with milk and sugar, please. You say: It's a little lengthy but let's work on it. The first word is yea-dnaw. The J sound like "y"s. And then the "a" with the accent underneath it is an ""aw". So it's yea-dnaw. yea-dnaw kah-ve. "W" sound like "v"s. So it's kah-ve. Yea-dnaw kah-ve z mlekyem ee tsoo-krem pro-sheh. The "sze" is a "sh" sound and the "e" with the accent is an "em". So it's "pro-sheh". So altogether Yea-dnaw kah-ve z mlekyem ee tsoo-krem pro-sheh. At full speed it sounds like this: So take your time, but I want to hear you try it. That's sounds great. Awesome. To say, One black coffee, please, you say: pro-sheh yea-dnaw tcharnaw kaveh. So let's break it down: pro-sheh; the "se" makes a "sh" sound. And the "e" with the accent is an "em". So it's pro-sheh. The "j"s are like "y"s, "yea" the "naw" and the "a" with the accent at the end is an "aw" sound. So "yea" the "naw". Pro-sheh yea-dnaw. The "cz" is a "ch" sound and then you have the "a" with the accent again so it's "aw". So it's "charnaw". So pro-sheh yea-dnaw tcharnaw kaveh. The "w"s are "v"s. "kaveh". So one more time: Now go ahead, ask me for a black coffee: Very good. To say, large coffee. You say: doo-zaw kaveh. Let's break this down. Large is "doo-zaw. The "z" with the dot over it is the "z" accent. And then the "a" with the accent under it is an "aw". So doo-zaw kaveh. "W" sound like "v"s in American. So together: Go ahead. Give it a shot. Very good. To say, medium coffee, you say: shred-nyaw kaveh. This one sounds a lot tougher than it is. The first word, shred-nyaw, the "s" with the accent is a "sh". And then the "a" with the accent at the end is "aw". shred-nyaw. The key is to roll the "r". shred-nyaw. And then kaveh. The "w"s are "v"s. Shred-nyaw kaveh. One more time: Give it a shot. Very good. To say, small coffee, you say: mawah kaveh This one is pretty easy. The first word mawah. The "l" with an accent line through it is a "wah" sound. And then the "a" with an accent is an "awe". So all of these is "mawah". And then "kaveh". The "w" sound like "v"s in Polish. Kaveh. Mawah kaveh. Go ahead, say small coffee. You got it, that was great. And that's how you order coffee.

I'm the author of "Secrets, Tips, and Tricks of a Powerful Memory" and I'd like to discuss a common problem -- remembering to take something with you in the morning on the way to work or on the way to school. I think we've all had that where we get halfway there or we get to work or we got to school, "Oh, my goodness, I forgot something." Let's have an idea of how to do it. I'm going to give this to you in two steps because it can be fun. The first thing is the front door of your home probably is constructed of steel. Sneak over to the kitchen and take a couple of those silly magnets that you have on the refrigerator and put them on your front door. Normally keep them where the hinge is, so that when the door swings or slams too hard, it won't get the full effect and so they won't fall down. But tonight when you're working on the Smithers contract for work and you must remember to take that with you in the morning, take a piece of paper and write "Smithers" and put it under the magnet. Now move that magnet over to the doorknob side. You can't miss it. That's one way. But after you do that a couple of times, here's the fun way. Don't write it down. Instead take that magnet, put it over to the doorknob side, and see it being blown to smithereens by a piece of dynamite. Smithereens. Oh, yeah, the Smithers contract. And if you see that magnet having been moved from the hinge side to the doorknob side, you know you have to remember something. What do you have to remember? The thing that's in your picture. That magnet being blown to smithereens. And, yes, you can even take it the next step and just every night think about what you have to take in the morning and associate it to the doorknob. If you don't happen to like Mr. Smithers, whose contract you're working on, rip the doorknob off and bonk him in the head. That's how you can remember every single morning to take what you have to take.

Autism in Girls vs. Autism in Boys | Autism

There seems to be a higher incidence or a higher ratio of boys as is to girls. With autism the data is three to five boys get diagnosed to one girl. However, when a girl is involved, she is more impaired and that is of concern but it's just something that we know we don't understand why this happens but there seems to be a difference in the biochemistry and in the genetic makeup to that degree that the male testosterone system is more vulnerable in that sense. So we have more developmental disabilities and definitely an increase in the diagnosis of autism as we do often increased speech delivery for example in a boy versus a girl and it's interesting that even in the unit NICU, when you have a male infant or a female infant get sick, the survival chances of the female infant is better that the male infant. So what is it about the chemistry of the makeup that is different between boys and girls? A lot of research is out there but as prevalence more boys are involved with autism than girls and more boys get impacted with autism than girls.

How to Install interior Window Trim

Ask This Old House general contractor Tom Silva helps a homeowner trim a window to match the rest of the house. Click here to SUBSCRIBE to the official This Old House YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=thisoldhouse Time: 3-4 hours Cost: $100 Skill Level: Moderate Tools List for Installing Window Trim: Prybar Hammer Table Saw Miter Saw Compass Hand Plane Sandpaper Speed Square Nail Gun Shopping List: Window Stool Molding Extension Jamb Molding Window Casing Window Apron Molding Shims Wood Glue Minimally expanding foam insulation Steps: 1. Remove any existing casing, stool, or apron molding. 2. Use the table saw and miter saw to cut a piece of stool molding to fit between the windows. Leave the ends long. 3. To determine the finished length of the stool, hold the extension jamb and casing in place, leaving a ¼” reveal between them. Then set the distance from the face of the casing to the face of the stool and transfer that measurement from the side of the casing to the stool. 4. Ease the edges of the stool with a block plane and sandpaper. 5. Use shims to make the stool square to the window. 6. Use the nail gun to nail the stool in place. 7. Rip the extension jamb pieces to the correct width, then cut them to length. 8. Cut the casing to length, mitering the corners at 45 degrees. 9. Make a mark ¼” from the edge of the extension jamb where the casing will sit. 10. Assemble the extension jambs and window casings as a single unit on a workbench or sawhorses using screws, wood glue, and nails. 11. Dry fit the trim assembly in the window opening. Shims may need to be added or the plaster may need to be taken down slightly. 12. Use minimally expanding foam in any joints around the window and around the extension jambs. 13. Nail the trim assembly in place. 14. Attach the window stool to the casing with a screw. 15. Cut the apron to the correct length, which is the distance from the outside of the casing to the outside of the casing. 16. Glue and nail the apron in place. Resources: Tom installed 3½" Colonial casings and used stock lumber for the remaining pieces. All of the wood and tools used can be found at a home center. First of all, you want to determine if there is a family history of bed-wetting. If so, then you want to speak to your pediatrician regarding that. You can also use some of the following tips to help your bed wetter. When you start potty training, remember your child is going through wearing underwear full time. So, if you are concerned that your child is going to have an accident at nighttime, you can allow him to wear underwear but, put a diaper over the underwear so that, he doesn't soak the bed if he does have an accident. You want to limit his drinks in the evening. I recommend that you only give him drinks at diner and not after that. You also want to make sure that he fully empty's his bladder before he goes to bed and then, if there's a fear of the dark, you can consider giving him a lantern or a special flash light that he can use to walk to the potty in the middle of the night. You can also consider using a training potty in his room. You can put it next to his bed so he doesn't even have to get up in the middle of the night and leave the room in the middle of the night. He can just use the potty next to his bed. Some parents have found success getting their child up before they go to bed. For instance, if your child goes to bed at 7 and you don't go to bed until 11, then you can take your child to the potty before you go to bed. If your child is a light sleeper or has trouble getting back to sleep, I wouldn't suggest it. But, some parents have had success getting their child up, having them go pee and they go right back to sleep. You also want to motivate your child to stay dry at night. He can get a special reward such as ice cream for breakfast or special kids show when he wakes up if he has dry underwear when he wakes up. And, those are some ways that you can help your child overcome bed-wetting.

In the first day or two, keep your distance. Know that that pig needs his space. Not space, but personal space. Don't try to hold him and love on him right away. Let him get used to you. Think of him more as a child than you are a pig, or a pet, or a dog. Think of him more as a child than you would a dog. They need to begin to trust that their environment is safe, and that those that are in their environment are safe. So make your little pen area for your piglet so that it has a bed and a litter box and a place to eat. And then take your cues from the pig. Some piglets are very social right from the get-go, and others are very anxious and worried and concerned. Get down to their level. When they're looking at you for attention, you don't need to have food all the time. In fact, get rid of the food. Just be in their space. Pet them if they allow you to pet them. Nice, gentle strokes. If that's as close as they want you to be that first day, then that's fine. The calmer you are, the more calm the pig's going to be. And when they come to you and ask for attention, give it to him. You don't have to be hanging over them like this. It scares them. They want to go backwards. So instead of leaning forward to them, lean backwards and let them come to you. Pigs are aware that your company doesn't belong in their house, in their nest, and they sometimes protest. So when you have a pig, especially when it's a young pig and you're just bringing it home, try not to overwhelm it with visitors, and if so, then let the visitors look, but really not try to overwhelm the animal. To socialize your pig with other pets that you have in the house, the dog in particular, you should be sure that the dog is contained with a leash on it, and then see how they get along, and just observe. Sometimes it'll be easy socializing between the two of them, very easy introduction between the two of them, and sometimes it can be very difficult. So be sure that you recognize that the pig is not playing with your dog, if it is trying to fight the dog. It's not playing. It's actually trying to defend itself. When socializing with children, you can have them sit in the pig's playpen area, but make sure that there's not a lot of running around. They don't like loud noises, and they don't like fast movement, so sometimes that with young children can be difficult. Once the pig has established that this is fine, the child is fine to run around the house. It doesn't have to be forever. Be sure that the pig and the child have a nice introduction at the very beginning.
