ASK This Old House | Pantry Doors, Reflective Shingle (S18 E24) FULL EPISODE

Nathan travels to Missouri to install a set of bypass doors for a pantry; Richard tests two different styles of smart automatic water shutoff valves; Ross explores the design and testing of asphalt roof shingles that can reflect some of the suns heat away from the building. SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse. How to Install Bypass Pantry Doors Nathan Gilbert travels to Missouri to install a set of bypass doors for a pantry. Where to find it? Nathan installed two JELD-WEN Colonist Primed wood interior doors that most closely matched the dimensions of the opening. Nathan recommends ensuring the door has not been pre-hung and does not have bore holes in it for a standard knob. These doors can be found at home centers. To make the doors bypass, Nathan mounted a Bypass Door Hardware kit, which is manufactured by Johnson Hardware. The kit comes with all the hardware required to mount the doors. All the other tools and materials required to install these doors can be found at home centers. Testing Smart Automatic Water Shutoff Valves Richard Trethewey tests two different styles of smart automatic water shutoff valves. Where to find it? Richard explained that most modern automatic water shutoff valves fall under two categories of design: sensor-activated and valve body activated. The sensor-activated valves are usually more economical and have a faster response time, since their primary function is to detect leaks and other plumbing failures. The sensor-activated valve Richard demonstrated was a Floodmaster App-Based Wireless Plumbing Leak Detection & Automatic Water Shut-Off System, which is manufactured by Reliance Detection Technologies. The kit comes with two sensors and additional ones can be purchased and paired. The valve body activated valves have more features to them, including usage reports and running health tests to try and catch plumbing failures ahead of time. The all-in-one smart valve Richard demonstrated was the Phyn Plus Smart Water Assistant + Shutoff, which is manufactured by Phyn. Expert assistance with this segment was provided by the Walter F. Morris Company. Future House: Solar Reflective Roof Shingles Ross Trethewey explores the design and testing of asphalt roof shingles that can reflect some of the sun’s heat away from the building. Where to find it? Ross toured the Saint-Gobain R&D Facility in Massachusetts. The solar reflective shingles with 20% or less solar reflectivity that Ross saw are Landmark and Landmark Pro Solaris shingles. The highly solar reflective shingles with up to 40% solar reflectivity are Landmark Solaris Platinum shingles. These are all manufactured by CertainTeed. Enjoying full-episodes of This Old House? How to Build a Console Cabinet | House One | This Old House

Using pocket-hole joinery and plywood from the home center, This Old House DIY expert Jenn Largesse shares the steps she used to turn a complex build into an easy assembly #ThisOldHouse #AskTOH SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse "Why do we build? For me, the motivation is often practical: I see a piece of furniture that I love, but can’t abide the hefty price. "Take this console cabinet, for example. I spotted a similar one online for $325. I loved its striking black color and cane door and drawer- front details. So I snapped a photo and did some research. My penny-pinching instincts again proved correct: I found that I could build it for about half the cost of the original. "That was motivation enough for me to sketch out a plan and head to the home center to pick up some materials. Back in my workshop, I cranked up the music and was ready to make some sawdust. By the end of the following day, I had my own handsome cabinet with plenty of storage space for family-night puzzles and board games—proving that, with the right tools and a little bit of effort, you can create a functional, quality piece of furniture that doesn’t drain your bank account." ASK This Old House | Cedar Shingles, Vegetable Garden (S18 E22) FULL EPISODE

Tom explains the architecture, installation, and maintenance of white cedar shingles; Richard explains some of the common failure points in hose spigots and how to repair them; Jenn travels to Raleigh, North Carolina to help a couple build and plant a self-watering vegetable garden. SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse. All About White Cedar Shingles General contractor Tom Silva explains the architecture, installation, and maintenance of white cedar shingles. Where to find it? Tom explained the maintenance of exposed white cedar shingles, which are a common building material in coastal New England. For the demonstration in the barn after the house call, Tom demonstrated SBC white cedar shingles in a variety of stains. The combination house wrap/air gap Tom used on top of the sheathing was Slicker HP Rainscreen 6mm, which is manufactured by Benjamin Obdyke. For nails, Tom recommended a 6p box nail with a galvanized finish. In the demonstration, he used Grip-Rite 6p galvanized box nails, which can be found at most home centers. Expert assistance with this segment was provided by SV Design. How to Fix a Leaky Hose Spigot Richard Trethewey explains some of the common failure points in hose spigots and how to repair them. Where to find it? The spare washer kit, teflon tape, and spigot repair tools can all be found at home centers and plumbing supply houses. How to Build a Self-Watering Vegetable Garden Jenn Nawada travels to Raleigh, North Carolina to help a couple build and plant a self-watering vegetable garden. Where to find it? Jenn built a heftier raised garden bed using cedar 2x lumber, which she got from Western Red Cedar Lumber Association. The corner brackets that held the lumber together and contained the hose connection are the Aquacorner Raised Bed Soaker System, which is available through online retailers. The timer Jenn connected to the spigot was a 1-port single dial irrigation timer, which can be found at home centers. Because the homeowners wanted to grow vegetables in the garden, Jenn selected an organic raised bed/potting soil mix. She also selected strawberries, tomatoes, basil, oregano, thyme, Thai basil, and lettuce for the vegetable garden. These can all be found at home centers and nurseries. This Old House | Tiling is a Family Affair (S41 E22) FULL EPISODE

For over 100 years the doors leading to the living room in our Cape Ann Shingle Style have been hidden in pockets, sliding out only when needed. But somewhere along the line, one of them stopped sliding. Kevin finds Tommy doing some detective work trying to restore the antique door. SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse. Our homeowners like the idea of generating their own power for the house. Kevin finds solar expert Daniel McLaughlin installing a small panel on the roof. Meanwhile on the ground, Jenn and Landscaper Fred Pendleton are leveling the yard with the help of some very large boulders. Boilers were originally designed to heat water at full blast or remain completely off. Richard shows Kevin how the new boiler for our project is designed to heat water to just the right temperature. Upstairs, Erik and Mark Ferrante are working with a unique pattern for tile in the guest bathroom. Erik shows Kevin how he cuts and lays out the tile on plywood to make sure the pattern is centered. He then installs it on the floor. Enjoying full-episodes of This Old House?
