But it's also a mystery to the veterinarians we are not too sure just how to take care of teeth at this point. But we do know that the males who have the tusks are having difficulties as they age. We are seeing abscesses in the tusk area. Tusk is a rooted tooth that goes all the way into the back of the jaw all the way up and then continuously grows and that can be a very big problem for your pig. In order to have good dental care there are two products that I suggest that you use routinely. We are not too sure just how well this is going to work but one of the products is a homeopathic oral teeth gel. I am sure if you Google it you can find it online. The other thing that I think is going to work is sweet potato chews. There are dried sweet potato chews that are becoming very popular with dogs; I think that's an excellent source for the pigs. So the sweet potato chews may very well help to keep the tartar off of the teeth and that would be very beneficial. Another recommendation I have is that after that pig is five years old that you start taking him to a veterinarian to have their teeth cleaned. With males they have a perpetually growing tusk on either side' what you can do is have those cut down. So if it is bothering either the pig or anybody in the household, if the pig's behavior is inappropriate, you want to be sure to have those tusks trimmed down. But if they're not bothering the pig, and they're not bothering anybody else, you can just let those beautiful tusks grow.
