How to Plant a Cherry Tree | Ask This Old House

Ask This Old House landscape contractor Jenn Nawada travels to Washington D.C. to help a homeowner select and plant a cherry tree for his house. #ThisOldHouse #AskTOH SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse Time: 2-3 hours Cost: $100 Skill Level: Beginner Tools: Shovel [https://amzn.to/2J9A1Df] Hand rake [https://amzn.to/39eSvNo] Canvas tarp [https://amzn.to/2UbTkSB] Hose [https://amzn.to/2UIN44b] Shopping List: Cherry Tree [https://amzn.to/2wmtDpG] Compost [https://amzn.to/2xUCb7l] Mulch [https://amzn.to/2J7HuTc] Steps: 1. Start by identifying a good location for the tree, keeping in mind that it will grow and get larger. 2. Trace the outside of the bucket using the shovel, then pull the tree out of the way to dig. Leave space on the outside of the bucket so that the hole ends up being about twice as wide as the tree. 3. Dig the hole for the tree about as deep as the pot. Be sure to set the grass on top aside so it doesn’t end up in the backfill pile. It helps to place the soil and the grass on a tarp to prevent damage to the lawn. 4. Loosen up some of the soil at the bottom of the hole and mix in some compost. 5. Pull the tree out of the bucket and place it in the hole. 6. Gently break up the roots of the tree using a hand rake. 7. Rotate the tree and orient it in the desired position. 8. Mix more of the compost in with the soil that was originally dug out of the hole. Use this mix to backfill the tree. Be sure to keep the flare of the tree above the soil line. 9. Soak the tree with water. 10. Cover the base of the tree with a layer of mulch to help keep the roots moist and prevent weeds. How to Replace Full Mortise Door Hardware | Ask This Old House

Ask This Old House carpenter Nathan Gilbert helps a homeowner to replace his traditional mortise hardware with hardware that locks. #ThisOldHouse #AskTOH SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse Time: 1-2 hours Cost: $200 Skill Level: Moderate Tools: Flathead screwdriver [https://amzn.to/2wkzifT] Chisel [https://amzn.to/33QfKMN] Utility knife [https://amzn.to/2WEq3lk] Rasp [https://amzn.to/2J7xk50] Shopping List: Reproduction full mortise door hardware [https://amzn.to/3bovR6L] Steps: 1. Start by removing the old hardware. This can usually be done by removing a few screws in the door knobs, around the face plate, and the lockset. 2. Fit the new lock body into the old mortise. If it’s a tight fit, try loosening the opening with a chisel to ensure the door doesn’t split during the installation. 3. To ensure the lock body cover also fits in the old mortise, it may be necessary to chisel out some depth into the door. Secure the lock body into the door with a screw, trace the opening with a utility knife, then remove the lock body and chisel it out. 4. If the holes for the lock body no longer line up with the holes on the face of the door, trace out the new holes using a pencil. 5. Cut away the excess wood in the door using a rasp. 6. Install the new hardware with the provided screws. 7. Make any adjustments to the striker as needed to ensure a nice, tight fit. Resources: Nathan used reproduction door hardware, provided by Rejuvenation (https://www.rejuvenation.com). In order to match the existing hardware, he purchased individual components that included Plain 2-in Door Knob [https://ift.tt/3dDNJwo], Colonial Revival Plate [https://ift.tt/2WQvpdm], Colonial Revival Plate with Thumbscrew, Replacement Privacy Strike Box Kit in Burnished Antique [https://ift.tt/3dNWFiO], 3-1/12 Inch Doorknob Spindle, and Privacy Mortise Lock [https://ift.tt/2QVPHOJ], all in Burnished Antique finish. The front porch was completely rebuilt, mainly by the three apprentices. The columns were replaced, the fir deck was replaced, and now apprentice Nathan Gilbert is working on a new ceiling. It looks pretty complex, but in reality, it's not. Here's how it evolved. I'm going to start with my childhood dog, Sparky. I'm going to make him all lowercase for the moment. Now I'm going to turn it backwards, Y-K-R-A-P-S. That's very untechnical but imagine if you're using that for a basis for all of your website visits, you'll know it in no time, automatically. The next thing I'm going to do is take the third and fourth letter of the name of the website, capitalize them and put them in the third and fourth place of the name. The third and fourth letter of powerful, W, E capitalized now goes over here. The next thing I'm going to do is take the first vowel and assign it a number. You've probably done this all throughout your school days. A is the first vowel, E is 2, I is 3, O is 4 and U is 5. The first vowel in powerful is the O. That's the number 4 and that goes on the end of my new password. I'm going to append a 4 on the end of that password. I now have a virtually indecipherable password with three of the four possibilities that the experts tell us about, capital letters, lowercase letters and numbers. If you want to feel more secure, put a dollar sign into your passwords wherever you like. That is pretty unbreakable. Here's an interesting tip. If you think you may have a problem for the first few days or week or so of learning this system, create a sample. Create a password for an imaginary password called sample. You're going to take your dog's name or your old friend's name and turn it backwards lowercase. You're going to take the third and fourth character. The third and fourth character of sample is the m and the p. You're going to slug those into the third and fourth place of your password. You're going to take the number that represents the first vowel in sample. A, 1, the first vowel and you're going to append that to the end, and you know what? You can write that out and tape it right on to your monitor. No one will know what it means but you, and if anybody finds it, even if they know it's the idea of your password, they won't know how to do your others.

Now this tissue can be a combination of skin, muscle and fat. And during eyelid surgery we tend to remove a combination of these 3 entities, either skin, muscle, fat or all 3. In addition, as we age our eye structures tends to loosen and sometimes the lower eyelid laxity gets to the point where some of the white part of the eye is visible just above the lower eyelid. A patient who has that is also a good candidate for having the lower eyelid tightened. Patients who would not necessarily be good candidates for eyelid surgery are patients who have pre-existing eye conditions, such as dry eye or any other sort of eye deformity. So, a conversation with both your plastic surgeon and your ophthalmologist about whether or not you're an ideal candidate for this type of surgery should certainly be had.

How to Connect Steel Gas Pipes | This Old House

The method to connect steel gas pipes is changing. Pipes used to be cut with a tool that required several steps to make a threaded connection to a fitting. Richard Trethewey goes over the steps with the two plumbing apprentices. Then he shows them the new quicker method, using a fitting with a gasket to seal right into the proper place on the pipe. Using a clamping tool, he can compress the fitting to the pipe for an easy, safe connection. #ThisOldHouse #AskTOH SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse About This Old House TV: This Old House is the No. 1 multimedia home enthusiast brand, offering trusted information and expert advice through award-winning television, a highly regarded magazine, and an information-driven website. If you start off when they are very young and you start giving them baths you will find that they can enjoy it very much. A secret to giving them bath is do not turn the water while they are in the bath tub. Prepare everything before hand before you put that little piggy in the bath tub or in the shower. Then, also you can be perpetually feeding them something. Cheerios work great because they float on the water. Don't worry about getting any soap in their mouth or anything. They can eat a little soap it doesn't hurt them one bit. And then when you are done shampooing them you want to just gently clean the ear, the outside of the ear where you can see the dirt, you can clean that off. Don't try to clean the dirt that's down into the ear it could give your pig an ear infection. The eyes are also quite easy to clean and they can be very weepy. If your pig's eyes are runny you might look very closer to see if they have an eye lash that might be on the eye ball that's called entropion and simple surgery can sometime correct that. You can also just use a wash cloth. I recommend that you wrap it around your finger and that you just rub the eye very gently so that the pig is not disturbed by the wash cloth. On a daily basis you can groom your pig with a very hard bristle brush, almost like a scrub brush. Because that will exfoliate all of that dead dry skin and they don't have dandruff they just have really thick skin, so as those skin cells die it looks like it is really dandruff. All pigs have it; it's not just your pig. Grooming can be part of your interaction with your pig everyday, they love to be groomed and they love your touch. So groom often.

How to Install Exterior Flares | This Old House

The exterior of the house has clapboard siding at the first floor level and shingles at the second level. Tom Silva shows Kevin O’Connor and homeowner Joe how to make a flared detail with the last rows of shingles before the clapboards start. With a crown molding detail also at the transition, the flare will go above it. Tom builds a jig of curved studs to accept the crown on the bottom and to bend the plywood into position above it. The shingles get applied to the bent plywood. This detail goes all the way around the house. How to Read the Hierophant Card | Tarot Cards

In this segment we're gonna spend a little time with a hierophant and what a worthy fellow he is. The hierophant, the word itself, was the title of the high priest at the Eleusinian Mysteries and it means revealer of sacred things. He reveals openly to people. In fact, when you look at the card, you will see that he's the first of the archetypes to have two actual humans before him. All of the other archetypes we've seen so far are there on their own in a very high plane, but this archetype is available and two people have come to him for initiation. His Hebrew letter is vav, V-A-V, and this means nail or hook. As a verb, it's used as the conjunction and in Hebrew. In other words, this is a connecting point. He's drawn as a pope or a priest, somewhat androgynously actually. Sometimes people have said it's actually a woman, Pope Joan, that legend of a once female pope but I don't really worry about that too much, whether it is or isn't, because for me, the primary meaning of this card is the opening of the inner voice. The correspondence is to the Hebrew letters and the Sefer Yetzirah's attributions to those letters is amazing because the Sefer Yetzirah gave to the letter vav the attribute of inner healing. And taurus, who rules this card, which was also given by the Sefer Yetzirah to vav, it rules the neck and the inner ear. So this is the card of the inner teacher. If we take it on the outer side, it is the church, authority, and all of those great religious structures which can be fine and also can be abused, because power is quite addicting to deal with. But in its finest use, this card will awaken the voice of the inner teacher. As Mahatma Gandhi said, anyone who will, can hear the voice. But, like everything, it requires previous and definite preparation. You too can hear the voice. This is what can lead you through life. Notice that the two acolytes who come for initiation have different decorations on their robes. One is wearing roses, and one is decorated with lilies. And this means that there are two ways that are equally valuable and equally valid to approach your spiritual studies and they make use of that in yoga as well. The roses represent desire. That would be very much like bhakti yoga, which is filled with emotion. The lilies represent reason, and that would be like the raja yoga, the intellectual yoga. So whether you come to these studies filled with heart and feeling or as a intellectual scholar, it is equally profitable. Notice that this card also, this archetype, also sits between two pillars. But they're not black and white, they're gray. And gray is the combination of black and white and so they represent wisdom. In the tarot, whenever you see gray, it's representing wisdom. Sometimes you'll see gray in the background. Sometimes you'll see gray in an object. It's always wisdom. He holds his hand in a very particular gesture. It is of course a gesture of blessing but it's more than that. It's an old mudra from India and it means what you see is not all there is. So this card has much to do on its upper polarity with a sense of significance of things, the meaning behind things and finding that through intuition. Intuition, said one of my psychology teachers, was tuition that you paid yourself. The inner teacher is there for all of us, and gazing at this card, meditating on this card, will awaken the inner teacher. When this card is on its lower polarity, then it could be power abused, then it could be the shadow of the church or any other religious organization in a less than positive form. Controlling. Too powerful. Or it could be a blocked channel or completely missing the point of what is happening. This card encourages you to tune into yourself.

So, oftentimes when we think about performing at something, we believe we sort of have to be incredibly excited, incredibly aroused, or even in the case of an aggressive sport, it might even think it's a good idea to become angry at the opposing team or opponent. There's lots of evidence, though in fact, that it can be quite disruptive to be incredibly angry. And even if you think about an aggressive sport like hockey, boxing, football, you often times will see boxers, perhaps, talking trash to their opponent before a fight. The strategy is obviously to make the other boxer angry, which is in fact going to hopefully impair his performance. He or she is not going to be able to sort of follow the typical technique that they would normally do in the ring. Same thing can be seen with football players on the line where they might be making comments about the other linemen’s family members or a catcher making that to a batter. So if we look at the area of sports, it seems clear that people really understand that getting the opponent angry takes them out of their game. Well in social science research, there’s been evidence going back decades, all the way back to 1908 by two people called Yerkes and Dodson. They established this law. Originally it was done with learning. And basically what they showed is that high levels of arousal, which is what we see with the case of anger, so anger is an emotion that is negative, valance, but it has high arousal where you see sadness or something like that has low arousal. So anger has high arousal, the same as fear. And what they demonstrated was that high levels of arousal and very low levels of arousal actually bring learning down. And scientists after that showed the same thing for motor performance. What typically leads to optimal performance is moderate arousal; something right in the middle. So for most of us, for most behaviors, what we're really looking for is not to be lethargic and too low. We want to make sure that we're alert. We want to make sure that we're paying attention but we also don't want to be too jacked up. We don't want to be drinking too much caffeine. We don't want to be overly excited or put too much weight on something. We want moderate levels of arousal to optimize performance. Now there are a few exceptions. If it’s very very simple behavior, then we might be able to perfectly get up out of our seat and walk over and open the door with a high level of arousal. The second category and this is true for some athletes, as you can imagine, an Olympic sprinter in the starting blocks. There's no question she's going to be incredibly aroused and excited and probably nervous. But it's an over practiced behavior. And when the behavior is over practiced, then it's really known really well, then the arousal may not interfere. A third finding that's come out recently is that, what really comes down to might be us being able to keep our attention and being present with the behaviors. And so it's also possible for those of us who are not professional athletes, that if we can get much better at keeping our attention on the matter at hand, high levels of arousal will not interfere as much.

How To Frame A Hip Roof | Generation Next | This Old House

Tommy Silva gives the apprentices a lesson in hip roof framing. SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse He explains the difference between common rafters and jack rafters. Before cutting, they go through the measurements to correctly mark the rafters. Tommy uses a template to mark the seat cut of every rafter for consistency. After the seat cuts are made, Tommy shows the apprentices how to correctly nail in the rafters. Generation Next: This Old House’s Generation NEXT initiative shines a light on the urgent need for young people to enter the building trades and fill the skills gap in America today. “There’s a critical need for people in home construction,” says the This Old House master carpenter Norm Abram. The initiative has involved recruiting apprentices—some with no skills, some with a few years under their tool belts—to work alongside the TOH TV pros. How to Use Nonverbal Interventions | Classroom Management

Need more resources for molding young minds? THE Classroom Management Book: http://amzn.to/1FXoDpb Setting Limits in the Classroom: http://amzn.to/1Pj0iMN Classroom Management: Real-World, Time-Tested Techniques: http://amzn.to/1Q8s4JV The Social--Emotional Learning Approach Children Deserve: http://amzn.to/1L0l6p3 Classroom Management for Elementary Teachers: http://amzn.to/1FTGdKQ Watch more Classroom Management Strategies videos: https://ift.tt/2VRpAvy There are a lot of ways to use non-verbals to help keep kids on task or to get from kids what you want from them, and they range quite a bit. Some simple things might be things like proximity, moving closer to a student when they're off task will help the student pause and consider whether or not they want to get back on task. So that would be considered a non-verbal intervention, moving closer to them to get them to stay on task. More involved things might include things almost like sign language, where they're particular signs you give a student to let them know what you need from them or signs that they give you, so that they can communicate certain things to you. One way to really bring in non-verbal reinforcement is in the use of visuals. When you have a procedure or a routine that you need to reinforce with your students, sometimes just telling them what you need is not enough. We have a lot of students who are spacing in and out of listening to what we're doing. We have kids with auditory processing disorders, kids with ADHD, where if we're giving our instructions verbally or telling them what we need just with our voices, they're missing it half the time. When we have visual reinforcement, it can create extra clarity and help us get what we want from our students. If, for example, you have a student who you've posed a question to your class and the student has blurted out an answer, but what you really needed was a raised hand. If you have a picture of a student on your wall that has a raised hand that you can point to when that student blurts out as a reinforcement of "I need a raised hand" without you having to tell them that you needed a raised hand, that would be considered a non-verbal intervention. A more elaborate, perhaps, version of this is something we call the circulation ring. The circulation ring is where you think to yourself "what are the for or five thing I continually find myself saying when I'm circulating around my room, trying to help my students when they're working silently or in pairs or groups?" This might be things like, lower your voice, take out a pencil, put that away, step outside, things that you find yourself saying a lot. When you've figured out what these four or five things are, share that information with your class, "Class, I find that when I'm circulating, trying to help you all when you're in groups, I keep saying these four things over and over. Help me figure out what would be a good image, a good picture, a visual that would represent quiet down and put that away and take out a pencil." And let them be part of creating the visual reinforcement. Once you've got some ideas about what those images might be, put them together on little 2 x 2 cards and put them on a keyring or put them on a clipboard, then as you're circulating you can carry them with you, and if you have a student who needs to put something away, you flip to the picture of "put it away," and you show it to them and no verbal interaction has to occur. It's a non-verbal intervention. Another way to use that same strategy or a similar strategy is if you have that one student who just can't seem to be on task or do anything right, you can create an entire photobook just for that student. So you pull the student in at recess or lunch or at the end of the day and you do a little photoshoot of just that student doing the correct behaviors, that student sitting in polite position, that student sitting with a pencil in their hand looking at a piece of paper, that student not talking. You create the little photobook, you put it on his desk or her desk. The next time he or she is off task, you walk over to their desk, you turn to the picture that you need them to match. They see themselves doing it correctly, and they match the picture. Non-verbal intervention. With super young kids, kindergartener, first grade, they'd rip something like that up, not maliciously, but just because they're little kids and got a photobook, they're going to play with it. So another way to do that is to create a placemat, a laminated placemat with four or five pictures labeled A, B, C, D, and E. That way from across the room, I can look over at my student and say, "Sally, B." She looks down. B

So, for this lunge you're going to shift your weight to one side of your body, and then come right back. So your starting position is here, feet are together. You're going to start off shifting that weight to one side. You're going to lunge all the way down, keep the other leg straight. And then you're going to press back to your starting position. So, things to think about, focus on shoulders are rolled back, chest is up, abs are always engaged and tight. When you come out to the side really focus on that heel. Again, pressing through that heel, pushing the weight back, keeping the weight loaded in your heel. So you're really targeting the back of the leg and the butt. So you come all the way down, sit low in it, and then bring it right back. So you come out to the side, and then take it back. So again, you can do ten on one side, ten right here. And then switch to the other side, and do ten on this side. Or you can alternate right and left. You can do left, and then right, or whichever way. I'll just show you this way. So really focus on pushing your weight all the way back into that heel, pushing the hips all the way back, and then bring it back to that starting position. And that's how you do a side lunge for a sexy butt.
