How to Clean Brick with Acid

Watch the full episode: http://ift.tt/2lBxV34 Ask This Old House mason Mark McCullough demonstrates how to clean soot out of brick using acid. Click here to SUBSCRIBE to the official This Old House YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=thisoldhouse Time: 2 hours Cost: $50 Skill Level: Moderate Tools List for Cleaning Brick: 2 Buckets 2 Brushes Shopping List: Acidic masonry cleaner Drop cloths Tarps Containment sock (or old towels) Safety goggles Rubber gloves Steps: • Protect the area around the bricks being cleaned. Lay down a drop cloth first to prevent any scratching from materials, then cover that with a plastic tarp. • Place the containment sock around the bricks being cleaned on top of the tarp to further contain the mess. • Before handling the acidic cleaner, put on rubber gloves and goggles to protect yourself from serious burns. • Dry brush the surface of the brick to remove any loose particles. • Fill the first bucket with only water. • Dip the brush into the bucket of water and dampen the brick until it’s thoroughly soaked. • Fill the next bucket halfway with water. Then pour the masonry cleaner into the bucket of water. It’s important to pour the masonry cleaner into the water instead of the other way around to prevent any burns from the acid. • Dip a second brush into the masonry cleaner mixture, then gently apply the brush to the brick. • Let the brick absorb the cleaner for 3-5 minutes, then use the water brush to scrub any residue off the brick. • Repeat this process until the brick is clean. If the desired results are not achieved, strengthen the concentration of the cleaner in the bucket and also scrub a little harder than during the first pass. Resources: Mark cleaned the brick with Sure Klean 600 acidic cleaner, manufactured by Prosoco (http://www.prosoco.com ). It can be found at masonry supply stores and sometimes at painting supply stores. This cleaner should not be confused with muriatic acid, which is stronger and more dangerous. The other materials used for this project, including buckets, brushes, drop cloths, gloves, and goggles, can be found at home centers. Alcoholism is disease, here’s some resources to help you fight back: Responsible Drinking: A Moderation Management Approach http://amzn.to/1ZdgP9f I Need to Stop Drinking!: How to get back your self-respect. http://amzn.to/1VEqbeU Why You Drink and How to Stop: A Journey to Freedom: http://amzn.to/1Q8pAv2 Alcoholics Anonymous: The Big Book: http://amzn.to/1N0rttl Alcoholics: Dealing With an Alcoholic Family Member, Friend or Someone You Love: http://amzn.to/1j9cvH4 Watch more How to Understand Alcoholism videos: http://ift.tt/2Ck1CQp People are often concerned about whether they can inherit alcohol disorders or other substance disorders. What we do know now from research, is that there is a genetic predisposition to developing alcohol problems. There are genes that we know could be passed on from generation to generation, that can determine the potential for an alcohol use disorder. People have to be careful that, if there is a lot of alcohol use and alcohol problems in a family, they should know that and often people don't want to discuss it. There's a lot of shame that goes along with substance use disorders. But families, they should discuss it, because what it really means for someone, is that if you have a child and you have a family where there's been a lot of alcohol problems, even if you as a parent may not have any kind of problem with substance use, it means that your child may have a higher likelihood of developing a substance use disorder than the child in a family where there isn't that genetic predisposition. On the other hand, people can get very scared about that and feel that, "Oh my God, if I have this in my family, I can never drink." Well, that's certainly a choice to be made by an individual. They may not want to take that risk. But what it really does mean, is that people need to be much more mindful of how they drink and how they may use other substances. They may need to be more mindful than the next person, of that. And, again, I say that with the caveat that all of us should be mindful of how much we drink, or use any substances. But people who have that genetic predisposition, have to be particularly so and really need to always be thinking about their drinking and how much they drink and how they're drinking, and really, throughout their life. And really teaching their children the same thing.

That's because pigs love to eat. But you should be very, very concerned about what you're giving them as a treat and when you're giving them a treat. You be sure that you're only treating them when you've asked them to do something and they have done what you've asked them to do. Appropriate treats are in the grain and greens, you can give them a Cheerio - a Cheerio, not a bowl full of Cheerios - but only after they have done something you've asked them to do. It's very important that you don't continually treat the pig to go from point A to point B, that you're actually treating the pig when it accomplishes what you're asking it to do. And it needs to be one little treat, it doesn't have to be a bowl full of treats. Doesn't have to be a apple, it can be a slice of apple. So keep your treats at a minimum and only in the grain and greens. If you give them green spinach leaves, that's good for them and they probably love it.

It's really important to remain calm as difficult as it may be, you don't want to get upset with your child. Once you start potty training, if you ask your child to use the potty or tell them that it's time to go to the potty and they have a tantrum, you don't want that to get them out of using the potty. For instance, if you say, "Okay. It's time to go sit in the potty" and your child falls on the floor and has a tantrum, starts screaming and crying, he says, "No, I don't want to." You can't let that behavior get them out of going to the potty. You still want to follow through with your demand. So you want to tell them, you know, "We're going to go sit on the potty now." You want to help them up. You can gently guide them under their armpits to the bathroom. Don't carry them, don't make it fun, still having them walk to the bathroom on their own with a little bit of guidance, but it's important that you don't let the tantrum allow them to not do the behavior that you asked them to do because they will learn that every time they don't want to go potty, all they have to do is throw a tantrum. So you need to be consistent in the way that you respond to tantrums. Basically just ignore, continue on with what they're doing and have them go to the potty, and that way, you can reduce tantrums again in the future.

Filters in photography are not cheating; they're just a tool like your camera to hep take better photographs. There are three filters I want to talk about today. The first one, probably the most common, in the circular polarizing filter. The circular polarizing filter screws onto the front of your lens and allows you to change the polarity of light. When asked what the polarizing filter does, most people would answer "It makes the sky darker." It does, but it also makes the ground darker as well. It's not the reason you use it. The polarizing filter is used to change the polarity of light. It can make surfaces more reflective or see-through. For example, a window can be either using a polarizing filter. Blues become more vibrant, the water can become more reflective or see-through, and skies and grass also becomes much better for landscape photography. The second filter I want to talk about is the variable ND filter. Like the circular polarizer, it screws on the front of the lens, and by switching it, it allows me to change how much light is entering my camera at any time of day. That allows me to pick what shutter speed I want to shoot with, rather than the shutter speed being determined by the brightness of the light. The filter I use the most is the graduated ND filter. this filter starts off dark at the top and works its way to clear at the bottom. By placing it in front of the camera, I can even the exposure of the sky to the ground, which means I get a more effective landscape. You don't have to hold the graduated filter in front for the entire time; you can screw on a bracket, slide the bracket in and this filter will sit there comfortably in front of your camera so you are always getting that nicely-exposed sky. I prefer not to use the bracket myself, as it does tend to create a bit of a tunnel and therefore a vignette in the photograph. To see how well one of these works, have a look at the screen and we're going to put a digital graduated filter on a landscape so we can see how it effects the photograph. So what I'm doing now is drawing a graduated ND filter in front of my photograph and using that to control exactly what's going on just from where the filter lands. So you can see from having absolutely bright sky and an even foreground, I can measure my sky to the foreground and have a nice easy exposure. So these three filters - the circular polarizer, the variable ND and the graduated ND filter - are the three filters I never leave home without.

They're also referred to as miniature pigs. They have a lot of different names. Some of the names are just a brand, and some of them are actually descriptions, and most of them are mutts. In fact, they're all mutts. They are mutt. They came from a variety of Southeast Asian breeds initially. Now, they are mixed with other breeds as well. Today, the breeds are such a combination of breeds, but what we're noticing is that their size is becoming a little bit smaller than the original ones. We also find that there's a variety of colors that we didn't see early on. The biggest difference is the size between the livestock pigs and the miniature pigs. They're probably about 10% of the larger ones. The pot-belly pig is honestly about 80 to 120 pounds. Some are smaller, very few though, and some of them are larger, and not a lot of them unless they're overweight.

The acronym S-C-E-R-T-S stands for Social Communication Emotional Regulation and Transactional Support. The social communication piece is very important, because that is an area that children have difficulty with, particularly in the autism spectrum. So to build on that connectiveness, to build on the social awareness, interaction, engagement, is a very important piece for a child to be able to learn to connect and to basically grow in his school environment as well as natural environment. Emotional regulation comes in from just, if a child has sensory issues, or gets overexcited, or is just not involved, learning becomes an issue, engagement is an issue. So helping these children regulate, and emotionally regulate is very important. A lot of sensory interventions are useful but also behavior and getting children to calm down. For transactions, the transactional piece is what helps build on relationships and interactions with prompting, with support. And not only just for the child but also the team members need to be able to orchestrate and work together. What the child needs, whether it's a speech pathologist, occupational therapist together with the psychologist, it's a whole combination taking place in the school system. And what I like about this approach is it a bit from everybody, and makes it usable, and it gets to one of the core symptoms. So not just dealing with education but dealing with the social piece, dealing with the internal emotional regulation piece, as well as the transactional piece because the child has to be able to engage with their environment and manipulate the environment and have the environment work with the child as well. And that interaction and that support is very crucial and very beneficial for children with the autism spectrum.

And probably, that goes back to Freud. Originally, depression was conceptualized by Freud as anger turned inward. So oftentimes, anger has been subsumed under depression as a psychopathology. Now, recent research doesn't really indicate that that's necessarily the case. With that said, even though anger is something that is oftentimes characterized by high physical activity and approach behaviors and depression is something that typically when people think of it involves escape or withdrawal behaviors and low activity, there are some similarities. They're both negative emotions. And in fact, in anger management trials, one of the studies we did... We had people coming in with very, very intense, extreme anger management issues. And it turned out there was high comorbidity with major depressive disorder. So even though these were people who were out and they were engaged in really active angry behaviors, they also had high symptoms of depression. So it may not be necessarily that depression is anger turned inward. But that doesn't mean that the same person can in fact be experiencing both depression and having anger management difficulties. Now the good news is and we weren't sure this was going to happen. But we had these people come in for anger management treatment. And when they came in, they had high levels of anger and they had high levels of depression. The treatments we provided, we based them on cognitive interventions, relaxation interventions, and then skills like problem solving and a sort of communication. So that was the focus. We also did things though to bolster their motivation so that they wanted to participate in the actual anger management. Now with that said, fortunately, it turns out that the anger management treatment was very, very successful. Their anger symptoms came down dramatically. That was about their experience of anger. And also, the behaviors they engaged in that were self-sabotaging. What was also the case though was their depressive symptoms went down as well. So while there are empirically supportive treatments for depression. And certainly if you're experiencing depression, we want you to speak to a professional who can provide you with an evidence-based treatment for depression. We also have some evidence that if someone has anger and depression, it's possible that by learning these skills, these cognitive behavior therapy skills, it might in fact be able to bring down the symptoms of both. But again, whether it's depression or an anger issue, it's something you definitely want to consult, a psychologist or a psychiatrist or other mental healthcare provider to deal with. They're both very serious issues. But fortunately, both of these in fact are highly, highly treatable.

They're very clean. As a matter of fact, that's why they're such a good house pet. They are very, very meticulous in the house. Actually, they are very disturbed in the barnyard. That the other pets in the barnyard, like the goats and the cows, they are messy, and the pigs are very disturbed because they want to be very, very clean. Another myth is that they eat garbage. Mnh-mnh, they don't eat garbage at all. They are true vegetarians. They should be kept on a diet of just greens and grains, is what I tell people. So keep them on a good pot-belly pig food and not eating garbage or dough. Another myth is that they are dumb. They are not dumb at all. As a matter of fact, they're a lot smarter than I am half the time. You actually have to appreciate their extreme intelligence. They say that they are the forth most intelligent animal on Earth, so they are pretty smart. As a matter of fact, they learn how to manipulate about at the same way that a two- or three-year-old child does. They can get their way pretty easily, so we have to be aware and be a good parent in order to have a good pig. Another myth is that they are fat. That's not true. I know artists, for years, have depicted them as a big, round, fat animal, and that's not true at all. They should be sleek and lean and athletic like a dog. The biggest myth is their size, and I think that is the biggest problem that we face today as far as myths go. There is a lot of breeders online that will be telling you that they only get 20, 25 pounds. That's not true at all. The smallest ones I've ever seen are 60 pounds, and that's only a few of them. Most of them get to be 80. I consider that to be a small pig. A hundred and twenty pounds is a larger size, average larger size pig. So that's a big myth you have to be very careful of. When we think about these pigs, we need to understand that these are miniature swine. They are not miniature to their breed, they are miniature to their species.

What Is Vaginal Rejuvenation? | Plastic Surgery

In terms of plastic surgical procedures on the vagina, vaginal rejuvenation can be broken up into two different components. The first is vaginoplasty and the second is labiaplasty. Vaginoplasty is a procedure where the vaginal canal is tightened and made smaller. This is performed in women who have commonly had children and who now have some laxity of the walls of the vagina. A small amount of one of the walls of the vagina is removed and the remaining tissue is sutured together in order to tighten the vaginal canal. Labiaplasty is a procedure that is performed on the external portion of the vagina. In some individuals, there is an excess of tissue involving either the labia minora or labia majora. These structures commonly being known as the vaginal lips. If there is excess tissue, that tissue can interfere with sexual intercourse and can be bothersome to the individual who has it. Therefore, there's a surgical procedure called the labiaplasty. And, in this procedure the excess or redundant labial tissue or external vaginal tissue is removed. The edges of the remaining tissue is then sown or sutured back together. And, both a more ascetically pleasing and functional external vagina is created. Both of these procedures commonly improve sexual satisfaction and overall well being. So, vaginal rejuvenation surgery is basically made up of two different procedures and those procedures are vaginoplasty and labiaplasty.

When they're fed properly and they're cared for properly, they could reach 18 to 20 years. Many of the pigs that we see that pass away earlier than that are being kept in a variety of conditions or have been inbred so badly that they are dying at five and six years old tops for some of the inbred pigs. The ones who live out their life to be 16 or so will often get arthritic conditions. They become more lethargic, and a lot of that to do with being overweight. We need to see more exercise, but they do live to be quite old.

I'm Ellen Goldberg and I welcome you to a Tarot moment from the School of Oracles. In this segment, we're gonna have a brief overview of the four Eights of each of the suits of the Minor Arcana. The Eights, in relation to the Tree of Life, belong to the Sphere of Hud, ruled by Mercury, and so it is a mental suit, and therefore each of the Eights has some mental attribute about it. The first we'll look at is the Eight of Wands, whose name is the Lord of Swiftness. It's the only card in the Minors of this deck that doesn't have, say, a picture of a scene that describes it, but simply has eight wands. But there's a reason for that. It is a scene, in and of itself. This Lord of Swiftness, whose astrological attribution is the planet Mercury and the sign of Sagittarius, the mind is going fast. And the eight wands here are like arrows shooting through the air, and it has to do so much with force approaching its goal. Things are happening swift and fast. Sagittarius, ruled by Jupiter, is a big freewheeling sign, and Mercury, our fastest planet, and Sagittarius, the archer who shot these arrows, is never gonna hold Mercury back. And so everything that happens with this card, happens fast. Some of the meanings on the higher polarity is force approaching its goal, quick decisions, impulsive decisions, sometimes even long journeys, because both Mercury and Sagittarius love to travel. Know that you're going to be learning things maybe even by the school of hard knocks, because you're gonna be going through things so fast you might want to take a little time and, uh, just make your mind up a little more carefully. On the lower polarity, well, things have gone too swiftly. Maybe you've gone so fast, you've even overshot the goal. Missed the goal. This card, on the lower polarity, says "slow down". You may be in an absolute frenzy, and it will take you nowhere but panic and disorganization. The Eight of Cups is called the Lord of Abandoned Success and its astrological attribution is Saturn, planet of karma, and the sign of Pisces, the most mystical. So this is a very spiritual and mystical karma. In fact, many saints had the placement of Saturn and Pisces. It's a test of severance. Can you let go? Here we see somebody who is leaving eight cups that are standing. They have not fallen over as we see in many of the other cups. They're full, and yet he's wearing a red cloak and red shoes, showing the passion for walking the mystic path. He's leaving something behind which other people may not understand why, because it's full. But he knows. He knows he's doing it for himself, and for the higher self. There's an eclipse of the moon going on here, or perhaps an eclipse of the sun. But those eclipses represent times to go interior, so this is an interior decision going on, and it's also mental because they've made the decision to let go. Sometimes, with this card, you're forced to let go. On the lower polarity, one of the meanings I know is, "The flood comes, head for the hills." Other times, it's desertion. Paralysis. Just leaving, even before the situation warrants it. I always get a kick out of what Aleister Crowley said about this in the more negative manner, because he said, "This card is like the morning after the night before, only the night before never happened." You just have that feeling. The Eight of Swords is called the Lord of Shortened Force. Remember the eights are mental, and here we are in a mental suit, so there's definitely a very big lesson in this card. Its astrological attribution is Jupiter and Gemini, where it is in its detriment, because Jupiter is so big and expansive and Gemini is the mental sign, and here the thoughts are all over the place. No wonder they call it Shortened Force. It's not just because it's held in, this is what the mind looks like when it's trying to do too many things, and it's try- has, uh, really shortened its own power by scattering itself all over the place. Sometimes there's a sense of isolation, and yet her blindfold is loose, her binding is loose, she could wriggle out of that in a moment if she chose to. There's advice with this card: Stop thinking. Stop talking. Meditate. Pull in your activities. Center yourself. And then it will calm down and become clear. When this card is on its higher polarity, just wiggle o
