LED Light Bulbs 101 | Ask This Old House

In this video, master electrician Heath Eastman enlightens host Kevin O’Connor on everything he needs to know about LED bulbs. SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse. Master electrician Heath Eastman enlightens Kevin O’Connor on LED light bulbs. Heath explains how these modern bulbs are more efficient, how to choose one to match an old school incandescent output, and more. Heath even shows Kevin how the temperature scale works, and points out that not all LED bulbs are compatible with certain fixtures and switches. Advantages of LED Bulbs LED bulbs are the newest iteration for common household light bulbs, and there’s a lot to like about them. Between improved energy-efficiency, longer lifespans, color flexibility, and lower heat output, these bulbs are lightyears ahead of the incandescents of old. LED Light Bulb: Color and Temperature LED bulb colors come in terms of temperatures. In most homes, these colors will land on the Kelvin temperature scale between 2700K and 5000K. The lower the temperature, the warmer and more yellow the light will appear. The higher end of the scale will trend toward bright white, even becoming blue over the 5000K mark. For living rooms, the lower end of the scale is best, and for garages, look for the higher end. What to consider before installing If an LED bulb will be attached to a circuit on a dimmer switch, there are two things to note. It’s important to ensure the bulb is a dimmable LED, and that the switch itself is rated for LED bulbs. If not, the bulbs might flicker or won’t last as long. Where to find it? Heath explains that the energy efficient, go-to choice in lightbulbs are the light-emitting diodes or LED bulbs. LEDs can produce the same amount of light as an incandescent bulb while using a fraction of the energy.Unlike incandescent bulbs, with LED bulbs you have the option to choose the color temperature of the light. This is measured by a Kelvin scale where lower numbers mean yellow candlelight and higher numbers mean blue daylight.Heath explains there many different shaped bulbs, but two common shapes/bases homeowners will be dealing with are the A19 medium base and B12 Candelabra bulbs. Heath also discusses how to read lightbulb labeling to identify enclosed fixture ratings as well as wattage and lumens. Understanding Smart Electrical Panels | Ask This Old House

In this video, home technology expert Ross Trethewey and master electrician Heath Eastman teach host Kevin O’Connor about this new wave of electrical technology. SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse. Heath Eastman and home technology expert Ross Trethewey teach host Kevin O’Connor about smart electrical panels. The two pros show Kevin how this new wave of technology is more about optimization than maximization, giving users complete control over their electrical system. Smart Electrical Panels are the New School Everyone has an electrical panel in their house, and the design hasn’t changed much in decades. However, the newest technology to come along is smart technology-enabled electrical panels. While these systems can stand alone or piggyback off of a standard panel, their features make them an attractive option for energy-savvy homeowners. Smart Panels Focus on Load Management Load management is the name of the game for smart electrical panels. The technology to monitor how much energy the home is using isn’t new, but the ability to manage how it’s using that energy is. These panels utilize relays to control circuits, and they report back to a smartphone app. Not only can the user see how much each circuit is drawing, but they can also turn each circuit on or off. They Optimize Energy Storage Systems In the case of a generator or solar-fueled battery system, smart electrical panels allow users to make informed decisions. In the past, these energy storage systems were often controlled by a separate panel of circuits, and the users couldn’t switch circuits at will. And, for those that weren’t, the backup system would power the entire house, which could deplete batteries too quickly or draw too much on the generator to be efficient. Rather than energizing an entire house with a backup generator, the user can choose which circuits turn on and off when the generator kicks on. This lessens the load and creates safer transfers. There’s a Panel for Every Scenario There are panels for existing electrical systems and those designed for new installations. The retrofit panels install after the existing electrical panels. Installers can expand the system with as many of these panels as necessary. For new installations, the smart panel takes the place of a standard panel, with main breakers and relays integrated into one clean unit. The integrated units are also a good idea for anyone who plans to upgrade to a large solar system or generator in the future. Where to find it? How To Build Window Flower Boxes | Ask This Old House

In this video, This Old House carpenter Nathan Gilbert and landscape contractor Jenn Nawada build and plant custom window boxes for a colorful touch of curb appeal. SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse. Carpenter Nathan Gilbert and landscape contractor Jenn Nawada help a homeowner tackle a curb appeal upgrade. Nathan offers the solution of adding some custom-made window planters, made from low-maintenance PVC. After building them, Nathan mounts the boxes directly to the home for worry-free style. Skill level: ⅖ Cost: $75 to $150 per box Time: 3 hours per box Where to find it? Nathan used stock 1”x10” Azek and stock Azek band molding and base cap molding (https://azekco.com/) to build three identical window boxes. To cut the materials to size, Nathan used a sliding compound miter saw which is manufactured by Dewalt (https://www.dewalt.com/). To secure the front, back, bottom, and side pieces together, Nathan used 2 part PVC glue, 1 ¼ - inch brads, and 2 ½ -inch stainless steel trim head screws, which can all be found at home centers. He secured the molding with 2 part PVC glue and 1-inch brads. To allow for drainage, Nathan created drainage holes on the bottom of the window boxes. He used a ½ inch spade bit to drill holes every 8 inches along the centerline of the bottom piece of Azek. Nathan mounted each window box directly to the house’s siding. He pre-drilled pilot holes, added caulk into each hole, then used 4-inch structural screws to secure the box to the clapboard through the pre-drilled holes. Jenn lined the window boxes with one layer of landscape fabric, which can be found at garden and home centers. On top of the landscape fabric, she added handfuls of Hoffman Volcanic Lava Rock (https://goodearth.org/) to cover the drainage holes. Jenn used a combination of annuals and perennials to fill the window boxes, which get morning sun and afternoon shade. Plants and flowers used include Northern Maidenhair Ferns, Pearly White, Glacier Ivy, begonia, bush violet, and vinca, which she planted in Fox Farm Ocean Forest potting soil (http://foxfarm.com/). In addition to regular watering, Jenn suggests using a slow-release fertilizer like Osmocote [https://amzn.to/3DlGZAA]—made by Scotts Company LLC. (https://ift.tt/P9VHOgA) once every three months to help keep the window boxes healthy. Looking for more step by step guidance on how to complete projects around the house?
