Battery Voltages | Tool Lab | Ask This Old House

In this Tool Lab video, This Old House master electrician Heath Eastman explains everything we’ve wanted to know about today’s power tool batteries. SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse. Master electrician Heath Eastman brings us to the Tool Lab to explain everything we’ve ever wondered about power tool batteries. With a brief history of the evolution of power tool batteries, Heath shows us what they look like inside and explains how manufacturers calculate battery voltage. The original tools were small and featured nickel-cadmium and nickel-metal hydride batteries. These batteries served the purpose, but today’s lithium-ion batteries are more powerful, compact, and longer-lasting. Under the Hood The inside of each battery contains a group of cells, which look similar to unbranded AA or C batteries. In nickel-cadmium models, manufacturers would arrange the cells and then wire them directly to a positive and negative terminal. In today’s lithium-ion models, the cells are still wired together, however, they’re more compact and attached to a circuit board. This circuit board controls the use of the cells for better efficiency, to prevent overheating, and even display how charged the battery might be. Quantity Determines Voltage Every manufacturer has its own battery-powered tool line, and within that line are different voltages: 12V, 18V, 20V, and so on. But what does that mean? Amp Hours Matter, Too Voltage is only half the story: amp-hours matter too. Amp-hours are essentially the amount of current that is available in the battery for the manufacturer. These batteries have more cells arranged in such a way that doesn’t increase voltage but allows the battery to sustain that voltage for a longer period or during heavier draw. Match the Battery’s Capacity to the Tool It’s important to match the amp-hour rating of the battery to the tool. For example, a drill can use a 4-amp battery and last a very long time. That 4-amp battery won’t last as long in heavy-draw tools like table saws, right-angle drills, miter saws, and circular saws. In fact, the battery might not even provide enough current for the tool to run. For those tools, batteries with higher amp-hour ratings are necessary. For these tools, batteries with 12 amp-hour ratings are more suitable. The Future is Bright for Battery Tools Batteries are already lightyears ahead of where they were, but things are still evolving. While 18 and 20-volt batteries are common on job sites, some larger tools are also making the battery switch. Electric lawn mowers and snowblowers often use even larger, higher voltage batteries to power them—a long way from the cordless screwdrivers of old. Where to find it? Heath breaks down the basic voltages of cordless tools and explains the technical aspects of battery technology. He takes a battery apart to show the individual cells and circuit board that make up the battery packs. Then Heath explains the difference between 10.8V and 12V as well as 18V and 20V ratings. FInally, Heath talks about Amp Hour ratings, how they relate to voltage ratings—before giving homeowners some guidance on what level voltage tool they will most likely need (and not need). How To Replace a Fireplace Cover | Ask This Old House

In this video, mason Mark McCullough helps a homeowner replace an old set of fireplace doors for a fresh new look and improved safety. SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse. Mason Mark McCullough helps a homeowner solve a burning problem: replacing a fireplace cover. With the homeowners’ enjoying a wood-burning fire every now and then, they’re concerned about their old fireplace doors and stubborn flue, and Mark knows just what to do. Skill: 2/5 Cost: $300 to $500 Time: 2 hours (though order time for the new doors will take longer) How To Replace a Fireplace Cover Note: It’s important that the fireplace be absolutely cool, with no embers or coals, so it’s best to wait several days after the last fire before attempting this job. 1. Lay a drop cloth on the hearth, butted up against the doors. With the fireplace doors open, scoop the ash from the fireplace and place it in the garbage bag. Also, use the shop vacuum to clean the soot and ash in the fireplace. 2. Remove the old doors by locating the mounting bolts and loosening them. These bolts are often rusty or covered in soot, making them difficult to remove. If pliers aren’t doing the job, it may be necessary to cut them off with a reciprocating saw, or bend them open with a pry bar. 3. Inspect the fireplace to ensure that the firebricks inside the firebox are in good shape, and that the flue works properly. If there is significant creosote build-up, it’s a good idea to call a chimney sweep service. 4. Measure the fireplace opening for the new doors. Measure the width at the top and bottom, as well as the height at the left and right sides. Record the smaller of each measurement and order a new set of doors using those dimensions. 5. With the new doors on-hand, place a drop cloth on the hearth and carefully lay the new doors face down. Use a utility knife to cut and install fireplace insulation around the inside of the fireplace doors according to the manufacturer. This insulation helps the doors regulate airflow and retain heat. 6. Locate the fireplace training bolts and clip them into position in the back of the surround. If there are several mounting locations, this might take a bit of trial and error to get a perfect fit. Be sure to install clips at all four corners. 7. Fit the doors in the opening and then open the door to gain access from the inside. Use the pliers to tighten the top bolts in place. Ensure that the bolts wrap over the top of the lintel (the metal bar that stretches across the top of the fireplace). With the top bolts snug, move to the bottom bolts and repeat the tightening process. Check to ensure that the fireplace doors are even and level, and adjust as necessary. Cedar Garden Hose Holder | House One | This Old House

House One editor and DIY expert Jenn Largesse shares how to build a convenient hose hideaway with a built-in reel. SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse. Last summer, my husband and I renovated our outdoor space and really brought our backyard to life—literally, as we added many more plants. This year, we’re excited to enjoy the big flower heads on the new hydrangeas and the privacy provided by the tall ornamental grasses around our patio. But we’re realizing that we’ll be doing a lot more watering, too. To help with that, I built a cedar box with a reel inside that will let me deploy the hose when it’s needed and neatly wind it up—and hide it away—when it’s not. Plastic furniture feet raise the wood off the ground; stakes will keep the box from tipping or sliding. Now, thanks to our new reel, watering plants will be much less of a chore, and I won’t have to worry about my kids tripping on the hose while playing in our new backyard.
