ASK This Old House | Pedestal Sink, Grout Cleaning (S18 E20) FULL EPISODE

Richard helps a homeowner replace all the plumbing components in his pedestal sink; Heath discusses some new technology for bathroom vent fans; the team shares more home inspection nightmares; Tom explains how to clean dirty tile grout using only household supplies. SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse. How to Replace Pedestal Sink Parts Richard Trethewey helps a homeowner replace all the plumbing components in his pedestal sink. Where to find it? Richard installed a Pfister Pasadena faucet in a brushed nickel finish. The faucet also came with a stopper, drain pipe, and an installation tool to do all the work. How to Choose a Bathroom Exhaust Fan Master electrician Heath Eastman discusses some new technology for bathroom vent fans. Where to find it? Heath showed a bath fan that can be mounted away from a bathroom to help with venting and noise. In this case, the one he showed was manufactured by Fantech. He also showed a fan that could take modules to control the fan by timer, humidity, or motion. This fan is manufactured by Panasonic. Expert assistance with this segment was provided by Eaton and Eastman Electric. Home Inspection Nightmares Kevin O’Connor, general contractor Tom Silva, plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey, and master electrician Heath Eastman share more home inspection nightmares. Where to find it? Expert assistance with this segment was provided by the American Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI). How to Clean Grout with Homemade Cleaner Tom Silva explains how to clean dirty tile grout using only household supplies. Where to find it? Rather than using a toothbrush, Tom recommends using a cleaning brush with stronger bristles. They sell specialty grout cleaning brushes at most home centers in the Tile aisle. The one Tom used in the video is manufactured by QEP. If the stains are really deep in the grout, Tom recommends using a grout removal tool and lightly scraping it against the grout to remove the layer of grout that’s been stained. Do this cautiously. The grout removal tool Tom used in the video is also manufactured by QEP. Once the grout is clean, Tom suggests that sealing the grout once per year will prevent it from staining again. Tom used a TileLab Grout Sealer, which is manufactured by Custom Building Products and can be found at most home centers. Enjoying full-episodes of This Old House? ASK This Old House | Custom Screen Door, Paint Trim (S18 E18) FULL EPISODE

Ross tests out some new smart lighting configurations; Tom helps a homeowner build a custom screen door to fit her unique front entryway; Richard gives some general advice on maintaining a washing machine; Mauro teaches a homeowner some techniques to paint old 1960s wood trim with a varnish on it. SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse. Ross demonstrated the Aurora Smart Bulb Dimmer, which is designed to work with Philips Hue light bulbs and is manufactured by Lutron. To build the frame of the door, Tom used 5/4” x 8” x 8’ straight grain fir. For exterior doors, Tom finds it very important to prevent the wood from warping in any direction, which is why he recommended using a combination of a half lap and a floating tenon for the joinery. To make those cuts, he used a Domino Joiner, which is manufactured by Festool and a Jobsite Saw Pro, which is manufactured by SawStop. To trim the door to size, Tom used a TS 55 circular saw, which is also manufactured by Festool. The corner accent brackets and the antique hardware were either found or salvaged by the homeowner, but similar products can be found online, at hardware stores, at specialty woodworking shops, or antique sales/salvage yards. The hinges and the screen door compressor can both be bought at home centers. In this case, Tom used heavy duty screen door hardware to handle the weight of the large door, and two compressors on the top and bottom of the door to control the swing of the heavy door and to ensure it closed tightly. The screening material they used for the door can be found at any home center. Tom recommends using clamps to slightly bow the door during the installation of the screen to ensure a tight fit. To secure the trim pieces over the screen, Tom used a 20V Max Cordless Bradnailer, which is manufactured by Dewalt. Braided stainless steel washing machine hoses can be found at home centers. The timed washing machine valve that only keeps pressure on the hoses for a set period of time is the Time Out Automatic Shutoff Valve, manufactured by Keeney Manufacturing Company. The washing machine valve that only operates when it senses a current draw from the washer is the IntelliFlow, manufactured by Watts. Both of these valves can be ordered online or from a specialty plumbing supplier. Mauro explained that in rooms with wood trim that has a finish applied to it, it’s helpful to lightly sand the surface using 220 grit sandpaper to give the paint more to adhere to. For this project, he used a ProSand Contour Sanding Sponge, which is manufactured by Norton Abrasives. To ensure a solid base for the paint, Mauro primed the trim with Stix Waterborne Bonding Primer, which is manufactured by INSL-X. Mauro decided to do two coats of primer in this case, since he thought it was more important to ensure a strong, even base for the paint. The other materials Mauro used to paint the trim, including the drop cloths, brushes, painter’s tape, and buckets, can all be found at home centers and paint supply stores. Many children may be fully potty trained during the day but still wet the bed at night. So first of all you want to figure out if there is a history of bed-wetting in the family. If that's the case, then you want to talk to your pediatrician. Most kids by the age of three are physically capable of holding their urine all night long. In order to help them become nighttime trained, here are some tips. First, you want to make sure that you've let it drinks at night; the last drink should be given with dinner. If they need a sip of water when they're brushing their teeth, that's fine. But you don't want to give them much more than that. You also want to make sure that they fully empty their bladder before they go to bed. And then, if there's a possibility that they need to go pee in the middle of the night, then you want to give them a special lantern or special flashlight that they can use to get themselves to the bathroom or you can use a little training potty in their rooms.
