This Old House | Cape Ann Shingle Style (S41 E17) | FULL EPISODE

Homeowners John and Molly plan to put the history back into their 1890s Shingle-style home. They’ll remove ‘70s carpet, repair cracking balusters and transform the front entry, restoring the home’s original beauty and updating it for modern living. SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse. Kevin sets the scene in Cape Ann, full of fishing and granite and picturesque harbors. He, Richard, Tommy, Norm and Jenn head to the house – a rambling 1890s Shingle Style that’s in need of a major overhaul. Homeowner Molly gives Kevin a tour of the first floor, where they’ll convert a three-season porch to all-season, expose hardwood floors under the tattered carpet, refinish some of the beautiful historic woodwork and move the kitchen to the center of the home. Homeowner John leads Tommy to the second floor, where they’ll create a larger closet and updated bathroom in the master bedroom. Two additional bedrooms rooms will also get altered into full suites. The third floor will be gutted and transformed into one guest bedroom and a playroom. Richard shows Kevin the “archaeological dig” in the basement, tracing the heating back to when the house was first built. Ductwork was added at one point but very large and not very effective in the winter. More recently, a boiler was added to heat water for kitchen and bathrooms. In an adjacent area under the porch, they’ll pour a slab and lay radiant to make an exercise room. And the area under the new kitchen will become conditioned to make the kitchen easier to heat and cool. Architect Thaddeus Siemasko discusses the design elements of Shingle Style with Norm and Charlie and presents his design plan for the house. They’ll build a new garage and mudroom off the side and add a porch onto the front that’s more in keeping with the original style. Inside, they’ll create a more open floor plan that will require some engineering. Jenn and Kevin walk the property, which is embedded in a woodland area covered with granite ledge. The homeowners want to keep the lot natural but will have to work with the ledge to create space for the garage and mudroom. Tom visits Jose and Anna’s house, where builder Ken Blanton shows him engineered siding with a fire-rated sheathing, which combined meets the WUI building codes. The failure of a power line was the apparent cause of the fire that destroyed Paradise. To prevent that from happening again the power company turns off the power to any community facing a high fire risk. Home generators are in short supply but Richard is at Joe and Avonlea’s house where new technology is solving the problem. Evacuations in Paradise happened with very little notice. Experts recommend that homeowners prepare in advance for emergencies by packing a “Go Bag”. Jim Broshears, the former Fire Chief of Paradise shows Kevin what goes in his Go Bag. It’s been a year since ashes covered the ground in this beautiful town in the Sierra Nevada foothills. Today is a special day as the survivors follow the ritual of any great undertaking. They will cement their determination to rebuild with a ceremonial groundbreaking at a memorial site. Here they honor the hundreds who ran towards the flame to save others and to those they could not reach. Luke and Crystal filed one of the first building permit applications after the fire. Step 1: Heat broiler Heat the broiler to its hottest temperature setting, and brush oil on the broiling pan. Step 2: Prepare the steak Add salt and pepper to the steak. RECIPE: Add all ingredients together and whisk until well incorporated. I want to show you how to make Dumpling Dipping Sauce. It's super easy but you really have to have the right ingredients. So first you're going to start with some Sinjong Black Vinegar. It's this black vinegar. It's very tart. It's a little almost smoky. It's very, very strong and I love it. It's just like got this very interesting taste, very different from, for instance, soy sauce which a lot of people use for dumplings. So you're going to pour that in here. Next, this little bit of sesame oil. This adds like this nice nuttiness. It's a little oily so it's got that nice mouth feel. And then Locama Chili Oils. So it's also known as Old Grandma Sauce on the street. They have a lot of different varieties but this one has chili flakes and peanuts in it. They also have a very popular black bean version. So I'm just going to pour that in here. So it's pretty spicy so if you really don't like spicy food, perhaps adjust out a little bit. And I'm just going to mix that all together and you're ready to eat some dumplings. And that is how you make Dumpling Dipping Sauce.

I am owner, head baker, decorator of Amanda Oakleaf Cakes in Winthrop, Massachusetts where we cupcakes, custom cakes, wedding cakes, birthday cakes. Anything you can think of we can make it into a cake. And today I will be talking to you about baking cupcakes. There's a couple ways that you can combine custom cakes and cupcakes. The first would be to order the custom cake to match the event. Colors and design and everything, to feed the majority of your people. And then the remaining amount of servings, we can do as cupcakes. And the design of the cupcakes and flavor can match the design and flavor of the custom cake. And display them around the perimeter of the custom cake. The other reason to separate cakes from cupcakes in the same event would be if there's an allergy. If we have somebody with a nut allergy for example, you can have a cake that serves everybody and has peanut butter in it, but maybe order some cupcakes on the side so that way people with the nut allergies don't feel left out. And those are two ways you can combine both custom cakes and cupcakes.

Girls and boys take different amounts of time to potty train depending on their personality, depending on their motivation, depending on their ability to learn, and the consistency of the parent. For example, two boys of very different personalities can take different amounts of time to train. If one boy is really excited to get a truck, every time he goes pee in the potty, then he's going to train more quickly than a little boy who isn't so interested in getting that truck, when he goes pee in the potty. On the other hand, if the girl really wants to be like mamma and use the potty, then she's going to be more motivated to use it, whereas her sister may not be so interested in using the potty because she wants to remain a baby, she wants to remain the younger sister, so she may not be motivated by potty training. So, it really doesn't depend upon the gender, it's more about the personality and the willingness to get potty trained.

How to Install an AFCI Circuit Breaker | Ask This Old House

In this video, Ask This Old House master electrician, Heath Eastman, wraps up an electrical project he started over a year ago by replacing the circuit breaker at his panel with one that is up to code. Heath Eastman explains how earlier in the pandemic, he installed a new USB receptacle in his kitchen but he never got around to installing AFCI protection. Whenever a receptacle is replaced, its corresponding breaker in the panel needs to be upgraded to an AFCI breaker. Heath demonstrates how this is done. Only licensed professionals should be touching an electrical panel. With the box open and the breakers exposed, there is a risk of extreme shock injuries and even death. 2. Shut the power off to the breaker panel. 3. Remove the cover plate for the panel. 4. Identify the breaker that needs to be replaced and flip it to the “off” position. 5. Grab the breaker by the center and carefully pivot it out of position until it snaps out. a. There could still be live voltage running through the panel, so this must be done very carefully. 6. To install the new AFCI breaker, the same process is done in reverse. 7. Wire the breaker by connecting the hot wire to the screw and the neutral wire to the bus bar, and the neutral pigtail to the neutral screw. 8. Hook the breaker onto the bar in the panel and snap it into place. 9. Reinstall the cover plate with the two screws. 10. Flip the breaker on and then restore power at the electric meter. Where to find it? Any work that is done on an electrical panel should be tackled by licensed professionals only. When replacing a circuit breaker, the circuit should be compatible with the manufacturer of the panel itself. Safe level of drinking #shorts

I'm sometimes asked by people what would be considered a safe level of drinking. That can be very different, depending on the individual. Generally, a safe level for any individual is a level at which one's not inebriated. Because when people are inebriated they often do things that they wouldn't normally do that could be dangerous. Also, people have to be cautious because often one's subjective experience is different from the objective data. People are often stopped by the police when driving and have no subjective sense of being impaired. But when, in fact, they're breathalyzed they actually are impaired. So generally if you're going to think of it, if you think a safe level of drinking is three drinks, I would try to have two. If you think it's two drinks, have one. Again, it's individual. It depends on your body composition and how you metabolize alcohol.

Master electrician Heath Eastman and home technology expert Ross Trethewey discuss electric vehicle chargers with This Old House host Kevin O’Connor. Electric vehicles are becoming more and more popular, and Heath has been getting many calls for charger installations from both homeowners and car dealerships. A lot of these calls are from people who don’t currently own electric cars but are planning for the future. Ross and Heath explain the levels of EV chargers and share what they think people should have installed in their homes. The two also make some predictions about where electric vehicle installations are headed and how our garages and driveways might look different sometime in the future. Skill Level: Professional only Before You Install an EV Charger 1. EV chargers are NOT homeowner or DIY-friendly. 2. GFCI protection required. 3. Needs a bigger feed cable to accommodate higher amperage. Electric Vehicle Charging Levels Level 1: Low voltage (120V) and low amperage. 4-5 miles per hour of charge; Will come with the purchase of an electric vehicle. Level 2: Higher voltage (240V) and higher amperage. It speeds up the charging capacity, so the vehicle can be fully charged in half the time. 15-30 miles per hour of charge, which is about the same amount of power as an electric stove or a dryer. Note: Heath and Ross recommend this level. Level 3: DC power. Can charge a vehicle very quickly but too intense for your average home. 15-30 minutes to fully charge the car. Currently seen at charging stations at rest areas. Where to find it? Joe the homeowner fabricates a stone hearth. Richard learns about automatic sprinkler systems. Kevin sees a simulator that shows how the Camp Fire spread. Avonlea and Joe’s house is one of the first rebuilds started in Paradise. They are starting to think about finishing touches. Instead of a fireplace, they’ve decided to go with a wood stove. Joe, who works with stone for a living, is fabricating a stone hearth in his shop. Kevin gets a tour of the house from Avonlea before visiting Joe’s shop where the work happens. They return to the house with the hearth and lay it out in the corner. Richard visits a house under construction where the sprinkler system is being installed. Rick Fox explains how the systems are designed according to code and shows the different types of sprinkler heads. Each head has an 8-foot spray diameter, and he installs them in all rooms except for small closets. Richard gears up in his raincoat and hat for a heat test to demonstrate how a sprinkler head is released. One year after the Camp Fire that burned Paradise, California struggles with new wildfires. One tool the state uses to study these blazes is a simulator that recreates the spread of the fire on a table with a projected map. Garrett Sjolund points out to Kevin where the fire started in Pulga and how it spread through Paradise within a couple of hours. In a wildfire, embers are the enemy of houses. A new ordinance in Paradise is designed to starve embers of fuel around houses. Jenn explains the codes, which are divided into two zones that dictate distance of trees and shrubs from flammable items. Then she meets landscaper Derek Onstein at Luke and Crystal’s house, who is spacing new shrubs and trees apart and keeping them away from the house. Instead of bark mulch he uses rock mulch up against the house. Even with the safety codes, the landscape will look great. Vent expert Brandon Powers shows Tom how a fire and ember safe vent works versus a traditional vent by lighting a fire in a simulated attic. The fire safe vent closes off at a certain temperature to prevent embers and flames from coming into the attic. Contractor Bret Wayland installs them not only in the soffit, but also around the foundation of a new house before it gets a coat of stucco Kevin arrives to the site of Jose and Anna’s home as the new foundation is being poured. Jose describes the old house that they were in for almost 15 years. The new house will have a more open kitchen concept, which they’ve planned with their builder.
