How to Bring Hot Water Outside

Ask This Old House plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey helps a homeowner add an outdoor faucet with both hot and cold water. Click here to SUBSCRIBE to the official This Old House YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=thisoldhouse Time: 4 hours Cost: $700 Skill Level: Moderate Tools List for Bringing Hot Water Outside: Compact pipe cutter Drill with hole saw attachment Torch Adjustable pliers Shopping List: Frost proof wall hydrant Solder Flux Copper female adapters Copper pipe and fittings Thread sealing tape Silicone caulking All weather screws Steps: 1. Before doing any plumbing work, turn the water off at the water main. 2. Use the compact pipe cutter to cut the cold line to the existing outdoor faucet. With the line cut, remove the old faucet. 3. Measure the center to center distance between the hot and cold pipes on the new faucet. 4. Transfer that measurement to the wall, using the old cold line hole as a reference for the new hot hole. 5. Use the drill with a hole saw attachment to drill a hole for the new hot water line. 6. Loosen and remove the stem units so the washers on them aren’t destroyed by heat when soldering. 7. Use thread sealing tape on the male ends of the wall hydrant, then thread on copper female adapters. 8. Cut two pieces of copper pipe about a foot long to fit through the wall. 9. Clean the inside of the female adapter and the outside of the copper pipe using plumber’s sand paper and apply flux to those same spots. Solder the joint together using the torch and solder. 10. Apply silicone caulking to the back of the hydrant and push the assembly with pipes into the holes in the wall. Secure with all weather screws. 11. Use copper pipes and fittings to make the connections from the backside of the hydrant to existing hot and cold water lines inside. Add ball valves to each line for future service. 12. Reinstall the stem units and turn the water back on. How to Install a Self-Watering Garden

Ask This Old House landscape contractor Roger Cook shows a homeowner in Orlando how to plant a low-maintenance vegetable garden using hydroponics. Click here to SUBSCRIBE to the official This Old House YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=thisoldhouse Time: 5 hours Cost: $700 Skill Level: Moderate Tools List for Installing a Self-Watering Garden: Rubber Mallet Torpedo Level Irrigation punch tool Shopping List: Hydroponic garden kit Weed barrier Landscape staples Perlite Coconut Fiber 32 gallon trash can Plug in timer Steps: 1. Vegetables thrive in full sunlight, so choose a sunny location. 2. Lay down a layer of weed barrier with landscape staples. 3. Drive support rods into the ground one foot using the rubber mallet. Ensure they stay plumb with the torpedo level. 4. Drive the support column into the ground over the support rods, sinking it 10” into the ground. Use a bolt to ensure the end of the column isn’t damaged. 5. Slide the lower planter over the support column. Add two spacers, then the support for the next planter. 6. Add the column extension to reach the final height of the system. 7. Before planting in the upper planters, use a scrap piece of pipe to cover the holes. 8. Fill the container ⅔ with perlite and ⅓ with coconut fiber. 9. Add plants to the corners of the planters, covering with coconut fiber. 10. Fill the lower planter with the same mix and plant with larger crops like broccoli. 11. Drop each square planter onto the column, keeping each level at opposing angles. 12. Add a small pot for the irrigation system to the top of the column, then a piece of black tubing, and finally a PVC tee fitting with a hole drilled in it for the spaghetti irrigation line. Hold the spaghetti line in place using the black tubing. 13. Run a main irrigation line between all four planter columns. 14. Drill a hole in the lid of the 32 gallon trash can. Slide the irrigation line into that hole and attach it to the submersible pump. Ensure the power line runs out of the trash can. 15. Attach the line from the pump to the main irrigation line. 16. Use a punch tool to pierce the main irrigation line and attach the spaghetti tubing to that line. 17. Plug the timer into a wall outlet, then plug the pump into that. Set the pump to run a few times a day. 18. Fill the trash can with water and add the nutrients as prescribed by the manufacturer. How to Add Fruit or Nuts to Bread Dough | Make Bread

Watch more How to Make Bread videos: https://ift.tt/2yi4Eno Okay, I'm going to show you how to add olives into your bread dough and I've already kneaded this dough, and so you could add olives. You could replace the olives and add nuts or fruits. Basically, whatever you want you can add in to your dough, but don't add it in until your dough has been developed and kneaded, and so I've kneaded this dough and I have 1000 grams of dough and I'm going to add in about 250 grams of olives. Since my dough is already kneaded I'm just going to work the olives in, and again you could do this with fruits or with nuts. If you're going to use fruits if you're going to use raisins or currants, my favorite way is to soak the raisins in warm water for about five minutes, then drain them off, and then add them to the dough, so that the dried fruit is not taking moisture out of the dough. I'm not adjusting the salt on my dough, even though the olives are salty, only because I like a bit of salt in my dough. I'm sort of squeezing the olives in and I'm also kneading them, and they'll break down a little bit. You can see a little bit of the black flecks of the olives and that's okay. I'm just working the olives into my dough. Once my olives are mostly worked into my dough, my dough should look like this. You can see that the olives have broken down a little bit and that's okay. Whatever your bread recipe is if it's; in this case it's a baguette dough; if it's a sourdough, follow the recipe instructions for the fermentation. Adding the fruit or the nuts doesn't necessarily change the fermentation time. It will change the consistency of the dough, but it doesn't necessarily change the fermentation time. For example, we added these olives into the baguette dough. We're still going to ferment our baguette dough for two hours. If it was a sourdough, we would still ferment our sourdough for two and a half hours or three hours.

Signs of Binge Drinking | Alcoholism

Alcoholism is disease, here’s some resources to help you fight back: Responsible Drinking: A Moderation Management Approach http://amzn.to/1ZdgP9f I Need to Stop Drinking!: How to get back your self-respect. http://amzn.to/1VEqbeU Why You Drink and How to Stop: A Journey to Freedom: http://amzn.to/1Q8pAv2 Alcoholics Anonymous: The Big Book: http://amzn.to/1N0rttl Alcoholics: Dealing With an Alcoholic Family Member, Friend or Someone You Love: http://amzn.to/1j9cvH4 Watch more How to Understand Alcoholism videos: https://ift.tt/2ybQpRh There's been a lot of focus in the media on what's called binge drinking. A lot of binge drinkers are younger people, at least that's what gets put in the media. We hear a lot of about binge drinkers in college and there is a great deal. We know from research, there's a great deal of binge drinking in college students and on college campuses in spite of colleges becoming less tolerant and a lot of colleges in fact have zero tolerance policies for any drinking or drug use on campus. Binge drinking does have an actual definition and that definition is five or more drinks in a single episode for men and four or more drinks in a single episode for women. And when we talk about how many drinks someone has, you have to really define what a drink is. In my practice, when people talk to me about how many drinks they have, I always ask them to define a drink because some of us define a drink, if it's hard liquor, as a typical cocktail, which is a typical shot of liquor and but often, what I find is that people will actually define a drink in a very different way so they'll define a drink as a tumbler of scotch, which is really the equivalent of four drinks if you're defining it just as a normal shot. Again, a glass of wine is generally considered six ounces. Well, some people drink, which is four to six glasses of wine in a bottle of wine so when I ask people that, sometimes they say, "I have two glasses." And for them, that's a full bottle of wine. So that's much different so when we define then one beer is one regular 12 ounce beer, not a 40, which sometimes people really talk about as one beer because it's one bottle so when we're talking about five drinks for men and four for women, we're defining that as one 12 ounce or five 12 ounce beers or four or four or five six ounce glasses of wine or four to five regular shots in a cocktail. So that's really how we define binge drinking. Binge drinkers, that doesn't mean that they drink that everyday. If they drank that everyday, it would not be called binge drinking. That would be a real alcohol use disorder. So binge drinking by definition is drinking those large amounts periodically. Again, it may be just on the weekend or it may be for college kids, the weekend often starts on Thursday so it may just be in the few days of however one defines a weekend, but not daily drinking.
