How to Start an Organic Garden

Ask This Old House landscape designer Jenn Nawada gives some tips on starting an organic garden. Click here to SUBSCRIBE to the official This Old House YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=thisoldhouse Skill Level: Beginner Shopping List: Organic seeds or seedlings Organic soil Ceramic or cedar planters Steps: 1. Every material used in an organic garden needs to be certified organic. 2. Planters can be made out of cedar or ceramic. 3. The soil must be organic as well. If you’re not using a planter, you’ll need to dig out a hole and remove the soil in the ground to replace it with organic soil. 4. Seedlings and seed packets also need to have a certified organic label. 5. For any garden, Jenn recommends asking yourself why you want to start a garden to determine what types of plants should go in there. Resources: In order to qualify as organic, every material used in the garden must be certified organic. Check the labels of plants, soils, and even potting material to be certain everything is actually organic. Everything Jenn demonstrated in the segment, including the seeds, seedlings, planters and soil, can all be found at home centers and nurseries. Soldering for the First Time

WEB EXCLUSIVE: In a recent episode of Ask This Old House, plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey helped landscape designer Jenn Nawada hook up a fridge with an icemaker. While he was there, he offered Jenn a crash course on soldering. Click here to SUBSCRIBE to the official This Old House YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=thisoldhouse Time: 1 hour Cost: $50 Skill Level: Moderate Tools List for Soldering: Measuring tape Pipe cutter Blow torch Bucket Shopping List: Pipe cleaner Solder Flux Pipes Fittings Rags Steps: 1. Shut the water off to the pipes being soldered. 2. Measure and cut the pipes to length using the pipe cutter. Have a bucket ready to catch any water left over in the pipe. 3. Let the pipes dry before soldering or the connection won’t take. 4. Use a pipe cleaner to clean the outside of the pipes and the insides of the fittings. 5. Generously apply flux to the cleaned ends of the pipes and fittings and fit the pieces together. 6. Hold the blow torch on the opposite side of where you plan to apply to solder. Wait a few minutes to allow the pipe to heat up, and then gently touch the pipe with the solder. If it quickly wraps around the entire connection, then it took properly. If it did not, continue to heat the pipe up and try again. 7. Wipe down the excess solder on the pipe with a rag. 8. Turn the water back on. Resources: All the materials required for soldering – solder, flux, blow torch, pipes, and fittings – are available at home centers and plumbing supply houses. If the affair is suspected, I think you're better off to offer voluntary confession. I think that kind of act is definitely more likely to get you points and you're more likely to then salvage a relationship if you express contrition, remorse, and if you express that sort of confession. However, if this affair is over and has not been discovered or suspected, I think it's better to not confess it because of all the painful feelings it will bring up and also, because you have to ask yourself, "Why would I want to confess this affair? Is it because I want to alleviate my own feelings of guilt?" You wanna burden your partner with those feelings of guilt? So, the point is, is that if it's your own feelings that you're unable to handle, then you need to figure out how to process them yourself. No need to burden your partner with this. You have to figure out why this affair happened and why it would never happen again and I think no reason to then jeopardize your relationship before figuring all of this out.

How to Safely Strip Paint from Woodwork

Ask This Old House painter Mauro Henrique travels to Sacramento to show a homeowner the safe way to strip paint. Click here to SUBSCRIBE to the official This Old House YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=thisoldhouse Time: 12 hours Cost: $100 Skill Level: Beginner Tools List for Stripping Paint from Woodwork: Utility knife Plastic putty knife Shopping List: Drop cloth Lead test kit Zero VOC paint stripper Laminated paper Mask Gloves Cheap throwaway brush Scrub pad Steps: 1. Before doing any work, test the surface being stripped with a lead test kit. Follow the instructions that come with the packaging to confirm that there is no lead present. 2. Starting from the top of the surface being stripped, apply a thick layer of the paint stripper using the paint brush. 3. Cover each section with laminated paper to accelerate the curing time of the paint stripper. Cut off any excess paper with the utility knife. Allow each section to slightly overlap with previous sections to ensure full coverage. 4. Wait for the laminated paper to turn brown. It should take somewhere between 20-40 minutes. 5. Once the paper has turned brown, take the plastic putty knife and drag it underneath the laminated paper. Most of the paint should come off with it. 6. Gently scrape the plastic putty knife across the surface to get any extra paint left behind. 7. Soak the scrub pad in some warm water and scrub the surface to remove any leftover residue. Resources: Paint stripping is a project that can be detrimental to a person’s health. For that reason, Mauro strongly advises that homeowners take a number of steps to protect themselves from toxins. If there is a chance that any of the paint being stripped was applied before 1978, it needs to be tested for lead. Lead tests can be bought at most paint supply stores and home centers. Mauro used the LeadCheck Swabs test kit, manufactured by 3M (https://ift.tt/2hzohzA). When choosing a paint stripper, check the label closely and choose one that reads “Zero VOC.” “Low VOC” paint strippers can be misleading, since there are few regulations determining the concentration of VOCs that can be considered “low”. Mauro used Smart Strip Advanced Paint Remover and laminated paper, both manufactured by Dumond (https://ift.tt/2KviWSO). The other materials required for paint stripping, including the plastic putty knife, drop cloths, disposable paint brush, mask and gloves, can all be found at home centers and paint supply stores. Expert assistance with this segment was provided by Mauro’s Painting (https://ift.tt/2rLicC3). How to Connect an Ice Maker Like a Pro

Ask This Old House plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey helps a special homeowner hook up her refrigerator with an ice maker. Click here to SUBSCRIBE to the official This Old House YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=thisoldhouse Time: 2-3 hours Cost: $30 Skill Level: Moderate Tools List for Connecting an Ice Maker: Drill Feeler bit Pipe cutter Bucket Wrench Shopping List: ¼” copper tubing Copper T fitting Multi-turn shut off valve with a compression connection Abrasive cloth Pipe cleaner Solder Flux Flux brush Steps: 1. Shut the water off to the house. 2. Locate the nearest cold water line and determine its location compared to the location of the fridge. 3. With that in mind, pull out the fridge and drill down with a feeler bit as close to the cold water line as possible. 4. Use the feeler bit to determine the best location to drill for the water line. Drill the hole. 5. Carefully uncoil the copper tubing and run it through the hole and close to the water line. 6. Determine where the water line will be cut. Clean that area with the abrasive cloth and cut it with a pipe cutter. Have a bucket ready to catch any water that comes out. 7. Once it’s dry, apply flux to the outside of the T and the inside of the pipe and the multi turn shut off valve. 8. Fit the pipe, the T, and the shutoff valve together and solder it. 9. Connect the ¼” copper tubing to the other side of the shutoff valve with the compression connection. 10. Go back to the fridge and uncoil the rest of the copper tubing. Leave extra slack high on the fridge so that it can still be easily moved in and out. 11. Find the opening in the back of the fridge to receive the copper tubing and screw it into place. 12. Put the fridge back in the opening and turn the water back on. Resources: While there are plenty of homeowner friendly kits available for ice maker hookups, Richard suggests doing a little extra work to ensure a secure connection that will last for a long time. Richard replaced the plastic tubing for copper tubing, and instead of using a saddle valve, he connected it to the cold water line using a compression connection with a multi turn valve, which he soldered into the cold water pipe using a T fitting. All of these materials are available at home centers and plumbing supply houses. Getting Started with a Chisel

Ask This Old House general contractor Tom Silva explains basic chiseling techniques. Click here to SUBSCRIBE to the official This Old House YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=thisoldhouse Skill Level: Beginner Tools List for Getting Started with Chisels: Chisels Whetstone Grinding wheel Steps: 1. Buy a set of chisels of varying widths with high quality steel. 2. Chisels with wooden handles are meant for more delicate jobs and can only be hit with a rubber mallet or used by hand. 3. Chisels with metal ends can be hit with a hammer. 4. To make a basic cut, hold the chisel perpendicular to the surface being chiseled and tap it in to set the depth. Make a few cuts in this way across the entire section being chiseled. 5. To actually chisel out the material, hold the chisel roughly parallel to the surface, bevel side down, and use the bevel against the surface to control how much is being taken out. 6. To sharpen a chisel, hold it flat against a whetstone and drag it back and forth until it’s sharp. 7. For seriously damaged chisels, a grinding wheel can be used with a sharpening jig attached to it. Resources: Tom suggests buying a few chisels with a variety of different widths, all with high quality steel. These can be purchased at home centers and woodworking supply stores. To sharpen a chisel, usually a honing stone or a whetstone can get the job done. Tom used a diamond whetstone, manufactured by DMT (https://ift.tt/2iog5Qv). For more serious sharpening jobs, a grinder with a chisel sharpening jig can be used. Those can found at lumberyards and specialty woodworking stores. Regression of either speech and language or of social relatedness and connectivity. In any condition, this is not normal, this is something of concern. The reason for regression is not clearly understood. Sometimes children are diagnosed to have a seizure disorder, but this is not necessary. A third of children with autism may have some kind of abnormal EEG activity or a full blown seizure, but the regression and loss of symptoms, loss of developmental milestones is something that is seen and is a reason for alarm, because parents absolutely get concerned and approached the pediatrician for that. Sometimes parents who do not pick up on this but need to be questioned about it particularly and go back in history or go back and look at her video and say, "Oh, my child used to be able to babble and say a lot more words, and they've just stopped saying it." It may be for a period of six months to a year. Sometimes the words come back and sometimes they don't. Diagnosis that needs to be considered when you have language regression like this is a syndrome called the Landau-Kleffner syndrome. That is a particular syndrome that is seen in a small group of children who lose language and there's treatment with the use of steroids that may be beneficial. It would be important at that point to involve a neurologist, get a 24-hour EEG done and evaluate it. There's a correlation between loss of language and abnormal EEG activity. Loss of motor milestones can be seen in children who have a neurodevelopmental disintegrated disorder and that is something that also needs further medical evaluation.

How to Install an Alternative to Gutters

Ask This Old House general contractor Tom Silva installs an alternative to a gutter when a traditional one does not work. Click here to SUBSCRIBE to the official This Old House YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=thisoldhouse Time: 2 hours Cost: $50 Skill Level: Beginner Tools List for Installing Gutter Alternatives: Ladder Hammer Prybar Drill driver Measuring tape Shopping List: Aluminum rain dispersal system Steps: 1. Remove the old gutter by prying off the spikes with a hammer and a prybar. Then, unscrew the gutter from the fascia with the drill driver. 2. Mark 10” from the end of the house, then 30” from the end of the house, then 50” from the end. 3. Screw the mounting brackets on your marks as far down the fascia board as possible. It should be at least 4” down from the roof edge and 1 ½” from the drip edge. 4. Clip the louvres on the rain dispersal system into the brackets. 5. Repeat the process as necessary to cover the whole side of the house. Resources: In most circumstances, traditional style gutters are the most effective at diverting water as far away from structures as possible, but they also require a downspout in order to redirect that water. In cases where large sections of roof require a gutter and there is no good place for a downspout, a rain dispersal system can be a viable option. Tom installed a white aluminum rain dispersal system, manufactured by Rainhandler (https://ift.tt/2KLWxBI). The system comes with screws, brackets, and extenders if the fascia board is too short. How to Make No-Knead Bread with Currants | Make Bread

Watch more How to Make Bread videos: https://ift.tt/2I3gYsf RECIPE: 430 grams bread flour, 345 g water,1 g instant yeast, 11 g sea salt. Mix ingredients w. spatula. Cover and let sit at room temp. 12 to 18 hrs. After fermentation, scoop dough onto floured surface and fold it several times to create round. Place round on wooden board generously dusted w. wheat bran. Cover with linen cloth and proof for 2 hours. Preheat Dutch oven to 500F. Transfer round of dough into Dutch oven and close lid. Reduce temp. to 450F. Bake covered for 30 min. Remove lid and continue baking for 15 to 30 min. more until loaf is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped. I showed you how to mix plain no knead. If you feel like having a variation I've got a no knead bread with beer that I think is really, really wonderful. This recipe calls for beer and buttermilk in place of the water, and so it is 175 g of beer and I use a stout, a Guinness stout. The beer should be at room temperature. You want all of your liquids to be as close to room temperature as possible, so that the dough can ferment at around 72 degrees, and 175 g of buttermilk. Next we add 300 g of bread flour and 100 g of whole wheat flour. If you don't have whole wheat flour, you can certainly substitute all bread flour. If you don't have bread flour, you can certainly substitute all-purpose flour for the bread flour. The all-purpose flour will ferment faster, so whereas this would take 12-18 hours of fermentation, and I prefer about 18 hours. It probably would take less time with all-purpose flour, probably closer to 12 hours. Next we're going to add 12 g of sea salt, and a quarter teaspoon of instant yeast, and then finally we're going to add 185 g of currants. And this is such a wet dough that you can add the currants right at the same time that you're mixing the dough and because we're not kneading this dough, it's not important if the currants are added before or after the kneading. They can be added right in, and these currants have been soaked in warm water and then drained. They were soaking in the warm water for about 5 minutes. And so I'm going to take a wooden spoon and just stir it. You can see it's just starting to come together. You want to soak your currants because if the currants aren't soaked, and you add them to the bread, they will pull some of the moisture from the bread into the fruit, and so by soaking the currants ahead of time, that allows the dough to remain at the same hydration. All right, so once your dough is mixed, just cover it with plastic wrap, and I prefer to use these clear containers and then I put a lid on. Putting a lid on won't affect the fermentation at all. There's plenty of air circulating in here to allow for fermentation. So you're going to put the lid on and then let this ferment for about 12-18 hours at the most. Okay, so this is the no knead beer bread and it has proofed for about 18 hours, and you can see these very, very beautiful air bubbles of fermentation that have occurred over the 18 hours, and that's really awesome. You want to see that, and so this is a thicker bread, because it has the currants in it. And so what I'm going to do is, I'm going to heavily dust the work surface and then use my hand, and just, sort of, very, very gently, scoop the dough out onto the surface. You don't want to handle this dough too much. And then, you just want to scoop out whatever dough is left in the container, and just be very gentle with this dough. And then what you want to do is you want to take-- this could be a board. I happen to have a bread board or you could also use a sheet tray. You just want to dust the surface where the bread is going to proof really generously with wheat bran or you could use something else, like cornmeal or something coarse, so that the dough doesn't stick to the surface. And then what you're going to do, this dough barely needs to be shaped at all. You're just going to fold it over on itself. And this is a stiff dough, because of the currants, and so you don't want to do too much shaping, and you want to put it onto the wheat bran, and it's going to proof for about two hours. And then, you want to cover it with a kitchen towel or a kitchen linen, so that the surface doesn't get dried out while it proofs. So our beer bread has been proofing for an hour and a half, and I'm checking it right now, and it looks proofed and looks ready to bake. And the reason why I say that is I see lots of open crumb, and when I push on the side of the bread, it's not quick to spring back, and that's what we want. That's what we're looking for in a proofed loaf of bread. And I'm going to do the same on this side and see, my indentation stays. So I'm g

How to Create a Desert Landscape

Ask This Old House landscape designer Jenn Nawada heads to Phoenix to recreate the desert in a homeowner’s front yard. Click here to SUBSCRIBE to the official This Old House YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=thisoldhouse Time: 1 day Cost: $2,000 and Up Skill Level: Moderate Tools List for Creating a Desert Landscape: Shovel Wheelbarrow Hand truck Level Compacter Shopping List: Soil Boulders Variety of desert plants Cardboard ¼” stone Modular pavers Steps: 1. Dig out the outline of a walkway about 3’ wide and 3-4” deep. Give the outline a slight curve to add visual interest to the walkway. 2. To mimic the hills of the desert, shovel piles of soil onto the landscape into seemingly random mounds. 3. Determine a few locations to place boulders in the landscape. Dig holes in those locations about 4” deep and roughly the width of the boulder being placed. 4. Carefully load each boulder onto a hand truck, wheel it into position, and roll the boulder into its final place. Backfill around the hole to make it look like it really belongs there. 5. Stage the variety of desert plants across the landscape. Things aren’t really clumped together in the desert, so keep the plants spread out. Be mindful of when plants bloom, if ever, to have an even spread of color across the landscape. 6. Once each plant is in its desired position, plant them all with the shovel. Dig down just about as deep as the root ball and twice as wide. 7. To plant cacti, wrap a piece of cardboard around the needles and move the cactus only by holding onto the cardboard. 8. Give everything a good watering. 9. Put down a layer of ¼” stone on the outlined walkway and level it. 10. Compact the walkway with a compacter. 11. Lay down the pavers over the walkway base in a running bond pattern. Resources: In any landscape design, Jenn recommends looking for natural cues in the surrounding area to recreate in a controlled way in your yard. In this case, she identified an abundance of small stones coating the ground, plants spread far apart from each other, and undulating hills. Those cues informed the design in the homeowner’s front yard. Jenn installed boulders, red yucca, lantana, bougainvillea, a few variety of cacti, and a Chilean mesquite tree. These can be found at nurseries, particularly in the Southwest region of the US and in zones 9 and 10. Expert assistance for this segment was provided by Rod Pappas and Xeriscapes Unlimited, Inc. Are Plastic Water Heaters Worthwhile?

Ask This Old House plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey weighs the pros and cons of a plastic tank water heater. Click here to SUBSCRIBE to the official This Old House YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=thisoldhouse Cost: $1200 Skill Level: Expert Steps: 1. Determining whether or not a plastic tank water heater will work for you depends on a variety of factors: 2. Time: Since plastic tank water heaters are significantly more expensive than traditional steel tank ones, you will need to live in the house for a longer period of time to see any cost savings. 3. Energy Savings: If you’re looking to improve the energy efficiency of the water heater, the plastic water heater is pretty comparable to steel tanks in terms of efficiency, so there won’t be a significant improvement. 4. Fuel Type: This type of tank is only powered by electricity, not gas. 5. Maintenance: The tank itself has a lifetime warranty, so it won’t need to be replaced. However, the metallic parts of the tank are not under warranty and will still require replacement every 5-6 years or so. 6. Consider these factors when deciding if this type of water heater will work for you. Resources: Determining what type of water heater will work best for you depends on a variety of factors, including how long you plan to live in the house, if you use gas or electricity, and how much energy efficiency you hope to gain from the tank. Carefully consider these factors before deciding what water heater should be installed. The plastic water heater featured in the segment is the Marathon electric water heater, manufactured by Rheem (http://www.rheem.com/) and can be found at home centers. While the tank itself has a lifetime warranty, the parts on the tank will still need to be replaced periodically, so check in with your local plumber to make sure he or she is comfortable servicing this type of tank.
