How to Create a Dutch Door

With the door still hung in the jamb, mark where the cut for Dutch door will be. Use that as a guide to mark for 2 additional hinges above and below the cut mark. 2. Mortise the door where the new hinges will go with a chisel. Scoring around the mark with a utility knife can help prevent the door from chipping or cracking. 3. Once the hinges can fit flush against the door, attach the hinges to the door using a drill and screws. 4. With the new hinges attached to the door, trace where the hinges will attach to the jamb. Mortise the jamb and attach the other side of the hinges the same as earlier. 5. Replace the old hinges with new ones so that all four hinges match. If the old hinges are thicker than the new ones, add a filler piece of scrap cardboard behind both hinges before installing. 6. Remove the door from the jamb. 7. Cut two pieces of scrap wood the width of the door and taper them on opposite sides. 8. Cut the door in half with the track saw to fit the tapered filler pieces. 9. Attach one filler piece to the bottom of the top half of the door using wood glue and screws. 10. Rehang the top half of the door, then the bottom. With the door in place, attach the second filler piece to the top of the bottom half of the door and adjust as necessary with a palm sander. 11. Install a barrel latch to the top and bottom halves of the door to lock the top half of the door. If a sink is gurgling after the toilet flushes, there’s probably a good chance the drain is not ventilated properly. 2. Replace whatever pipe fitting is at the drain past the P trap with a T fitting. Run pipe from the bottom of the T to the main drain line and then run pipe from the top of the T to the vent system of the house. This may require running a pipe to the roof if there isn’t a vent system. 3. In some areas, code may permit a retrofitted mechanical vent that can be placed on a pipe on top of the T instead of running it to the roof or vent system. First, remove any plants that have died with the shovel. 2. To fill any big holes left behind by dead plants, look around the yard to find good transplanting candidates. Plants that appear to be in the shade of trees are good choices, since the shade of the tree might have grown overtime and stunted the growth of those plants anyway. 3. When moving larger plants, tie branches together using the twine and mark where the face of the plant is. Be sure to replant it with the face in the right direction. 4. To fill smaller holes, divide perennials in the yard and even them out across the blank spaces. Dig a decent size root ball around the plant with the shovel, then remove the plant. 5. Using the shovel, cut the root ball in half. Then, replant the two halves in different areas. 6. Give all the transplanted plants a good watering. Fertilizing around the plants can help nourish them once they’ve been moved. Resources: Jenn used only plants that already existed in this homeowner’s yard, but they can also be found at nurseries. So, at first, I think it's very easy for us to judge ourselves, maybe even judge other parents when we talk about being angry at our children. This is a very, very common clinical problem. In fact, if you look at anger across the board, the most common trigger for anger are going to be those people in our families. So, it makes perfect sense that parents are going to get angry, frequently, with their children. With that said, it's a serious issue. It's obviously related to child abuse even though that's rare, and we want to take it seriously and seek out professional help when that's necessary. So in the case of anger directed at a child, there are a couple things to keep in mind. First, it's really critical that children have very clear understandings of what is expected of them and what the rules are. Likewise there need to be consistent contingencies, and what I simply mean is parents have to consistently, if a child breaks a rule, notify that child what has occurred. Explain what has happened and what the next steps will be, whether it's some form of punishment or just an explanation, so that the child has very clear, predictable ideas about how they're going to be treated in that environment relative to the behaviors they engage in. That alone is going to help, hopefully, reduce anger triggers for the parent. The second piece, though, is having realistic expectations and thoughts about the child's capacities. So, oftentimes we see that we sort of believe children are thinking the same way that we are about situations, and what we know is that their development in terms of their frontal lobe and things like that, in terms of planning, foresight, and thinking through consequences, just is not the same as an adult's. It doesn't necessarily mean we want to lower the standards. We want to make sure that our expectations or what the standards are realistic for our child, and we want to sort of set gradual, realistic goals for them to be reached, with consistent, as I mentioned before, consistent contingencies for them, so that they can grow and succeed. We want to engineer success for them and be patient as they go along the way. It doesn't mean we want to be passive. You don't. We want parents to be authoritative, to give clear rules, and enforce them consistently. We don't want them to be punishing children out of something emotional like anger. We want punishment to come if it's going to be the case because a rule was broken that was established beforehand and the child understands the reason. We don't want punishment to be coming from anger.

How to Choose a Straight Edge for a Circular Saw

Measure the offset of the circular saw guide to the blade. Mark whatever is being cut at the desired length, plus the offset. 2. Use a straight scrap piece of wood and place it on the measurement. Run the saw along the scrap piece of wood and the cut should be straight. 3. With a track saw, simply place the track along the desired length mark, offsetting for the thickness of the blade, and run the saw across the track. 4. Circular saws can also be converted to track saws using a guide system. It comes with a jig that can be attached to the bottom of any saw. 5. Make a track using two pieces of plywood. Cut one piece of plywood to be about 2” wide and glue it on top of the other piece. 6. Run the circular saw alongside the scrap piece on both sides. How to Install a Tankless Water Heater

An installation like this that involves gas piping is best left to a licensed, professional plumber. 2. Shut off the water and the gas to the hot water tank. Drain the water out of the tank and remove the old tank. 3. The new water heater may require a larger gas line, which will need to be run from the gas meter to the water heater. 4. Using the hole saw, drill a hole on the outside of the house near the location of the water heater. Run PVC pipes for the fresh air intake and vent through that hole. 5. Connect the cold water supply line to the water heater and the hot lines out of the heater using the ¾” copper pipe. 6. An on-demand water heater requires an electrical outlet.  An electrician may need to assist in adding one near the installation location. 7. A cross-over valve can be installed at the furthest plumbing fixture to allow the built-in recirculation pump to keep hot water at the ready. 8. Turn on the cold water supply, gas supply, and power to the water heater and test. How to Rebuild a Concrete Block Retaining Wall

Remove any plants lining the retaining wall with a shovel. Dig deep to give the plants a strong root ball. 2. Transfer plants temporarily to a tarp for safekeeping. 3. Remove the pieces of the old wall. 4. Dig a few inches back and deep along the location of the old wall. 5. Lay a thick base of gravel along the trench. Pack it down tight with a tamper. 6. Lay the first course of blocks about halfway deep in the trench. Lay one block every six feet or so along the length of the wall, level those to one another, and then fill in the rest of the wall. Use the rubber mallet to secure the blocks in place. 7. Lay a fabric liner along the back and base of the wall. 8. Backfill behind the first course with more gravel. 9. Lay the next course of blocks. Line up the channels using the channel connectors. Be sure to not overlap face joints. 10. Lay the perforated plastic pipe behind the wall and backfill with gravel. 11. Install the next course of blocks the same as the second. Backfill with gravel. Repeat until the wall is at the desired height. Some blocks may need to be cut with a wet saw to ensure an even fit on each course. 12. To secure the top cap for the blocks, add construction adhesive to the top course of blocks. Then add the cap pieces. Even it out with the rubber mallet. 13. Return any plants back to the wall if needed. Every child is different and all children can be potty trained. It really depends on the child as to how long it takes. Some kids can be trained within a matter of hours, other kids that can take a number of days. It really depends upon your child. But just because your child has special needs, doesn't mean he can't be potty trained. Your child can be potty trained. I had success training a 10-year-old boy with Autism who didn't have any language at all. But I was able to teach him how to use the potty by him, showing signs when he needed to go potty and also teaching him what he got when he did go pee in the potty. So, every time he went pee in the potty, he got a new figure to play with. On the other hand, I was able to potty train a little 6-year-old girl who had a little bit of language. She was very social and love to watch Alvin and the Chipmunks movie, and she was successfully potty trained by giving squirt of frosting every time she peed in the potty. That's an example of two different children with two different special needs that were potty trained using the same method. I recommend that you use an accelerated or an intensive method to train your child with special needs. This entails full time training which encourages your child to hang out in the bathroom, drink lots of liquids, go to the potty every 5 to 10 minutes and have lots of opportunities to be successful. The hardest part about teaching a special needs child about potty training is getting them to make the connection as to why they're getting the reward. So it's really important that you've got the rewards in the bathroom, ready and waiting for them, so as soon as your child has it success, you can give her the reward and you can praise her, "Wow, you had pee in the potty. Here's your sticker, here's your frosting." That's what's going to teach her the new behavior, and she needs to be able to do it over and over again, so that she learns a new behavior and that becomes her new behavior. So that's how you train a child with special needs.

I think you need to have facts and some documented evidence. And if it takes getting a private detective or collecting more evidence before confronting, I think it's very important to do that. Because if it's a mere suspicion your partner may simply hide it and get better at hiding the affair. So get your facts straight. Cut the angle iron to length, in this case 16”. Next, make L-shaped cuts on both ends of two of the pieces. 2. Cut the round bar stock to length, in this case 16”. 3. Weld the angle iron into a frame. Smooth out the welds with a grinder. 4. Weld the ¾” round bar stock to the frame as legs. 5. Cut out a piece of MDF to fit the size of the metal frame. Grind off a small chunk of the four corners to ensure a tight fit over the welded joints. 6. Place the MDF in the tray. It should be recessed at least ¼” to leave room for the slices. 7. Cut the tree branches up into small slices on the band saw. Be sure to cut branches with a variety of diameters. 8. Seal the gap between the MDF and the metal frame with hot glue. 9. Pour a generous amount of 2-part epoxy on top of the MDF and spread it out until the top is completely covered. 10. Place the wood slices on top of the table. Let the table cure for two hours. 11. Once the epoxy has set, sand the table smooth using a belt sander, then a palm sander. 12. Finish the top with more of the 2-part epoxy. Apply it with a paintbrush and let it cure for 24 hours. 13. Lightly sand the metal frame and legs and clean it up with acetone using the rags. 14. Apply the chemical blackener to the legs with the foam brush. 15. Finish off the metal frame and legs with the spray-on lacquer. Use painter’s tape on the slice top to protect it while spraying. How to Fix a Wobbly Toilet

Shut the water off to the toilet. Flush the toilet until the bowl is empty. Use a sponge and a bucket to suck out the remaining water. Disconnect the water line from the toilet. 2. Remove the bolt cap covers, nuts, and washers from the closet bolts on both sides. 3. Carefully remove the toilet and place it on the drop cloth. 4. Check the wax ring for deformities. This could be the cause of the wobbly toilet. The wax ring will need to be replaced in either case, so remove the old one with a putty knife. 5. Since the toilet is already off, it’s always best practice to check the condition of the toilet flange and repair as necessary. 6. Check the floor for level. If it’s out of level, it may be necessary to shim the toilet. 7. Put new closet bolts on the toilet flange and replace the wax ring. 8. Put the toilet back on the closet bolts. 9. Put shims underneath the toilet until it is level. 10. Add the cap base, the washer, and the nut to the closet bolts on both sides of the toilet. Alternate tightening each nut on both sides until the toilet is securely connected. 11. Cut the excess off the closet bolts using the hacksaw. Cover the bolts with the caps. 12. Reconnect the water line and turn the water back on. So, here you'll be either on a mat or on the floor on all fours. You're going to make sure that your shoulders are aligned with your wrists. They're out of the ears, not all crunched up and we're going to start off with one leg. You're going to keep the foot flexed, the knee bent at 90 degrees. You're going to think about pressing that heel up to the ceiling. So, you can take it down and then press it straight up. Really squeeze your butt. Press that heel up as high as you can, almost think about putting your footprint on the ceiling. So, you take it down and up, down and up. Really make sure here that your abs stay engaged. They stay nice and tight. Think about the belly button being pulled to the spine to prevent injury. If you don't, you're going to start arching that back and you can throw your back out if you're doing the exercise like that. So really make sure the abs are nice and tight. You take that knee down and then push it straight up, footprint on the ceiling. Same thing, other side. Foot is flexed. Take it up. Down. Up. Down. So you can do about 10 to 12 on each side. Switch it up. However many you're feeling. You're going to feel this from the first few because it's really going to focus on isolating each glute. So, also, you want to make sure that your body weight stays on the side that you're working. So if you're working your right side, you're going to focus on keeping that body weight on the right side. When you get tired, you tend to shift your body to the other side and that loses the tension in that glute that you're working. So, a tip I usually give is to bring both hands together on whichever side you're working and really focus that tension on that glute that you're working. And that's how you do a glute kickback with a bent knee.

Fetal alcohol syndrome is a very serious problem that's caused by mother's drinking heavily while carrying a fetus. Alcohol goes through the placental barrier and actually affects the child while developing in the placenta. Children with fetal alcohol syndrome can have distinctive physical features, that include a very thin upper lip and very small and wide set eyes and sometimes a large forehead. The fetal alcohol syndrome is essentially a disorder. It affects the central nervous system of a child permanently. As children grow, they can have intellectual disabilities. They can develop behavioral problems. They also, as they grow older, have a higher propensity to use alcohol problematically. So fetal alcohol syndrome is an extremely serious disorder, again, caused by alcohol use while the child's in utero. Another thing to keep in mind with fetal alcohol syndrome is the timing in which the woman drinks heavily. Earlier in the pregnancy is when the brain is starting to develop, and the earlier in the pregnancy that there's heavier drinking, the higher likelihood there is that fetal alcohol syndrome will develop.

How to Patch a Chipped Wood Floor

Click here to SUBSCRIBE to the official This Old House YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=thisoldhouse Time: 4 hours Cost: $50 Skill Level: Moderate Tools List for Patching a Wood Floor: Drill Block plane Hand saw Utility knife Chisel Forstner bit (optional) Shopping List: Polyurethane glue Wood glue Rags Floorboard (same type as rest of floor) Prestain Stain Painters tape Polyurethane Steps: 1. Drill a hole through the chipped part of the floor using a countersink bit. Drop a little bit of water in the hole, then add some polyurethane glue. 2. Drive a screw through the hole, securing the floorboard back to the floor. 3. If you saved the chipped piece of the floor, you can glue it back on the floor with wood glue. Be sure to cover all the exposed wood with glue before re-securing the patch. 4. Wipe off any excess glue on the patch with a wet rag. 5. If you don’t have the chipped piece or it doesn’t fit back into the hole perfectly, you’ll need to make a Dutchman. Examine the floorboard and find a section of it that matches the grain around the rest of the floor boards near the chip. 6. True up the edge of the floorboard chosen for the patch using a block plane. 7. Cut the patch roughly to size using a hand saw. First, rip the patch to rough width. Then rip the patch in half so it’s half the thickness of the floorboard. 8. Square one end of the Dutchman using the block plane. 9. Hold the Dutchman up to the section of the floor requiring the patch. Mark the length just slightly past where the chip ends. 10. Cut the Dutchman to length based on the mark. 11. Hold the Dutchman over the chip. Trace around the outside of the patch using the utility knife. 12. Chisel out the outlined section of the floor roughly the thickness of the patch. To save time, you can use a drill with a forstner bit and then switch to the hand chisel for fine tuning. 13. Pitch the Dutchman at an angle and shave off a little bevel on each side with the block plane so the patch will fit easier in the floor. 14. Once the Dutchman fits the hole, prestain it with a rag. Let the stain sit for about five minutes. 15. Stain the Dutchman with a rag. Let it dry for a few minutes. 16. Apply wood glue to the hole in the floor. Make sure all the raw wood is covered with glue. Wipe off excess glue with a rag. 17. Tape around the patch and let it sit overnight. After about 24 hours, add a few coats of polyurethane until the patch blends in with the rest of the floor. Tom used flooring saved by the homeowner, but flooring can also be found at home centers, lumber yards, and flooring retailers. For a patch, use the same type of wood and look for a piece that has a similar grain to the floor being patched. Tom secured the Dutchman to the floor using wood glue and polyurethane glue, both manufactured by Gorilla Glue (http://ift.tt/1AyaZD2). Examine the walkway. If the pavers have moved around but the base appears relatively firm, it might just be a freeze/thaw issue. If it appears that the pavers caved in, there’s a good chance it was damage by chipmunk tunnels. Keep this in mind while working on the walkway. 2. Before moving any of the pavers, take a picture of the pattern laid out. 3. Remove the pavers and place them carefully out of the way. It helps to lay them down in the same layout they were originally in. 4. Scrape away any soil that has grown between the pavers. 5. Fill in any gaps with pack until the base of the walkway is level with the rest of the walkway. Use the tamper to pack everything down. 6. Level the top of the gaps with stone dust until the base is completely level and compact it using the tamper. 7. Relay all the pavers in order, starting from the point furthest from the walkway and working back in. Refer to the picture as necessary. Use the level to ensure each paver is level with the walkway. Use the rubber hammer to lower and pavers that might be sticking up. 8. Sprinkle stone dust on top of the patch and work it in between the gaps of all the pavers with the push brush. 9. If the damage from the walkway was caused by chipmunks, protect the sides of the walkway by digging a hole on both sides of the walkway. 10. Fill both holes with concrete, then backfill with soil. But regardless of what you mean by disrespect, the way I look at it is, when kids are doing things I do not want them to do, that feel attacking or disrespectful to me, I like to think that that's just a test. A behavioral test that they're giving me to try and find out who we're going to be together in the classroom. Kids who test their teachers that way, or act disrespectful in the classroom, are battling something in their life where they don't trust adults, for whatever reason. And they have some experience where adults will ultimately either abandon or abuse. Not necessarily physically, but emotionally abandon or abuse. And because that's been their experience, now they have to test every adult they come into contact with, to see if that person is safe enough, if that person loves them enough, cares enough to hold them accountable for their behavior but do it without giving up on them. And often times, those behavioral tests that students give us feel like disrespect. But if we can think of it as just a test for us to pass for them to figure out who we're going to be together, that will soften the way we discipline students in those moments. So, if students are saying things like, "I don't care. I don't have to do that. I hate you. This is stupid. I'm bored." Or whatever these things are that feel like disrespect to us, come up with a default thing that you can say in those moments that does assume the best of them and passes the behavioral test. For example, one of my default things was, "Mrs. Dearborn what can I do right now to behave better?" So, if a student's saying, "This is stupid. Why do we got to do this?" "You know what you could be doing to behave better right now?" I want to go underneath their resistance or their disrespect and speak to the heart of the issue, which is that they don't feel safe and they want my help to feel safe in my classroom and with me. If a student says, "I don't have to do that." Or, "I hate you." Or whatever that might be I say, "You know what, I hear you saying that but we're going to work together in a productive way. So, you know what you could be doing right now?" I don't need to take those kinds of comments personally and really they're not personal. The students don't really want to be attacking me, they just want me to prove to them that I can care deeply about them while still holding them accountable to speak and act appropriately in my class. And if I can pass that behavioral test then we can work productively together in the class. That's what I would do about disrespect in the classroom.

However about 50% of relationships do survive affairs. The difficult thing is to heal after the affair and it's not an easy road. It's full of pain and mutual distrust for many years sometimes. The important thing, the first and most important thing is full and honest disclosure. If your partner keeps catching you with secrets and lies, your relationship will be doomed. So full and honest disclosure is the first step to healing. The second step is what I call the no contact contract. Meaning contracting that you will not contact your prior lover at all and that often means that you have to go through extraordinary measure to avoid your former lover. Meaning you might have to relocate to another city or quit your job if this was a work place affair. This is very important because continuous contact with your lover will jeopardize the health of your relationship. And the third step is then rebuilding trust and that takes time. And that has to be quality time together. A lot of time I advise that couples take a vacation together, that they give each other undivided attention. A minimum 15 hours per week of a 1 and 1 conversation which involves a lot of empathetic listening and understanding. Even with all of that it doesn't mean that your relationship will survive an affair. However, these three steps will guarantee that you will give it the best possible effort. Obviously if your infidelity was just a one night stand, it is much easier to recover your relationship from something short-term that it is from an ongoing deeply involved affair. Often those affairs that involve substantial investment of time and resources damage the marriage in irreparable ways. While those one night stands, meaningless casual liaisons can often, although still be damaging, can often be non-consequential to the marriage in long term.
