TOH: Trade School- Exclusive Preview of Vines Come Down, Walls Go Up!

The first order of business is reclaiming a good percentage of the back yard from invasive vines and brambles that have been encroaching on the lawn for years. Landscape contractor Roger Cook and his crew make quick work of it using a skid steer loader with a brush hog attachment. General contractor Tom Silva and master carpenter Norm Abram assemble and raise the gable wall for the new family room addition. Then, on the front of the house, Tom and Kevin repair a historic window sill that has collapsed, while adding new insulation, flashing, and side casings to the opening. At the end of the day, Norm and Kevin demo the old, low ceiling in the ell to see if any head height can be reclaimed for the new kitchen.

Every time we use a slow shutter speed, whatever's not moving really really fast is going to become beautifully reflective, going to become like a mirror, and it's going to bring all this light down from the buildings, including this crisscross pattern from the bridge, down onto our water source. Probably the biggest secret with slow shutter speed is it can be done during the day. There is a fantastic filter called a variable ND and by rotating the filter slightly, I can make it completely see-through or completely dark, controlling how much light is entering my camera at whatever time of day I want. This is really fantastic for things like waterfalls. When we have water that's running, rather than becoming a reflective, mirror-like surface, it's going to become misty and almost cloud-like. By using a variable ND filer during the day, we can control our shutter speed to the point where that water is doing fantastic things in what would typically be a nighttime environment. One of the greatest, greatest uses for the ND filter, and using it during the day, is to eliminate tourists from our photographs. Everyone's been to a national landmark like Machu Picchu or the Eiffel Tower or the Statue of Liberty with thousands of tourists crowding the photograph. It's probably the most annoying thing about being on vacation. Using a slow shutter speed through the variable ND filter, I can eliminate hundreds of tourists from the photograph. The biggest secret is anything moving faster than your shutter speed is going to ghost or eventually vanish from the photograph. By having that slow shutter speed during the day, we can't see any of the hundreds of tourists that were there at the same time as I was. So the slower the shutter speed, generally the better your landscape photograph.

This is something that's been researched, and there are definitely genetic conditions that are associated with autism, something like Fragile X. And that is a testing done often in children diagnosed with autism. It is rare but there's an abnormality in the extra chromosome being transmitted that is an issue in some children. However, this is a very small percentage of children who get diagnosed with autism who actually has a Fragile X problem. There are other medical conditions which are genetically known. But the understanding is that it's not one gene but there are multiple genes. And it's probably a host of little differences whether you call them de novo mutations or changes that take place or a single nucleotide polymorphisms called SNPs which can contribute and work together as a cascade to cause a difference in the immune system, in the methylation cycles, and so many other areas that are important in the neurochemistry and the neurobiology of the brain. So there is underlying genetic differences, and it is interesting that some of the genes that have been associated with autism are also involved with gastric function, with immune function. And a huge amount of research is coming out in this area. Something simple, not just with major genes but genes that code for enzymes. This is going to get a little complex as I use words like the creation of folic acid. It has to be converted to folinic acid. And you need MTHFR, methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase which is an enzyme that converts the folic acid to folinic acid. And children with the autism spectrum often can have one of two of the LLs or pieces missing in the creation of this enzyme. And if this enzyme is not working effectively, you may have some issues in the creation of folic acid which you need for your brain and for a neurotransmitter functioning which is important for the creation of dopamine, serotonin, norepinephrine. I'm going into major chemistry here, but that's what genetics involves. So it's not just a simple gene, but it's a cascade of genes. And it's not just the major chromosomes that we're talking about but the subareas, the DNA creation of even enzymes and the generic variations at that level that may be involved or that are involved and need to be researched and worked with in children with an autism spectrum disorder.

How Meditation Can Help Reduce Anger | Anger Management

Want to get a grip on your Anger? Check out these resources: Beyond Anger: How to Free Yourself from the Grip of Anger: http://amzn.to/1VFo0CA The Anger Workbook: http://amzn.to/1FXmxpi Anger Management For Dummies: http://amzn.to/1VFokRC The Cow in the Parking Lot: A Zen Approach to Overcoming Anger: http://amzn.to/1QZTMcb Anger Management for Everyone: Seven Proven Ways to Control Anger: http://amzn.to/1Om49ro Watch more Anger Management videos: http://ift.tt/2i50LXC The first thing to keep in mind is that when it comes to anger management, especially when we're talking about approach using mindfulness technique, it's not so much that we're trying to control anger, but rather learn how to experience or accept the anger and behave in ways that are in line with our goals and our values. So I found clinically that teaching clients mindfulness exercises, in fact, can be quite helpful at teaching them to learn to validate their experience of anger, get to know what sort of brings it on, how to predict how long it's going to stay, and then to sort of increase their self regulation, and that is their willpower about how to behave while they're experiencing anger. So there are a couple of schools of cognitive behavior therapy or behavior therapies that have been used, that take a mindfulness approach and it can be applied to anger. The first is one called dialectical behavior therapy or D.B.T. And that was originally created and developed for borderline personality disorder. And borderline personality disorder, there are lots of these folks who, in fact, struggle with issues around anger. So while the D.B.T. overall helps all of their symptoms, we do know that when utilizing the core mindfulness skills, it do seem to learn to do a much better job with their anger. And so, a few of the things you can focus when you're practicing mindfulness from this standpoint is first learning simply observe the emotion. So that's without judgment, just noticing what's there. The second is, we want to teach clients to learn how to describe what is going on. Again, without judgment, but to experience it and describe it. And then finally, we want to get them to participate. And that means sort of becoming one with it or accepting it, sort of mindfully experiencing it and then instinctively behaving or participating with what wouldn't be the most effective strategy given the situation. So we have observe, describe, and participate. Now, A.C.T., acceptance in commitment therapy is a behavior therapy that also uses sometimes mindfulness techniques to allow clients to experience their emotions without judgment and to begin to distance themselves from it so they still can act or behave in ways that help them achieve their goals. So again, these two forms of anger management are not about necessarily changing the emotion and reducing the intensity immediately by using mindfulness, rather opening up to the feeling in ways that we can improve our self-regulation so that we're not behaving in maladaptive ways and doing something that would be self-sabotaging. One of the ways in A.C.T. that you can do that is very similar to what I said in D.B.T. is you can first notice the emotion that's there, then name it and neutralize it. Create some distance, recognizing that you are not the same thing as your emotion, rather your experiencing the emotion, which means a couple of things. It's not part of my identity and it's temporary. This is going to come and go. It has a beginning, a middle, and an end. So by using mindfulness, we learn to become aware that emotions are temporary and they don't have to dictate what our next behavior is going to be. If we practice these skills again and again, and over time we can learn to experience them and still behave in ways that are very adaptive.

Clean the wall thoroughly with the cleaner to remove any grease or other debris. 2. Secure the drop cloth on the counter using the painters tape, covering the entire work area. 3. Mark the two sides of the wall using the painters tape where the backsplash should start and stop. 4. Measure the space you plan on tiling. Transfer the measurements to the tile adhesive mat and cut to size using scissors. 5. Peel one half of the back off of the adhesive mat, align the unexposed section to a straight surface like the existing countertop. Ensure the side with the thicker gap between glue dots is aligned to overlap the next sheet. 6. Once the sheet is in the correct position, stick it to the wall. Then peel the bottom half and stick that to the wall. 7. Repeat this process until the desired area is covered. Use the rubber float to push the adhesive mat to the wall for a permanent bond. 8. Hold the tile up to the wall to determine where it will need to be cut to size. 9. Use the utility knife to cut the mesh behind the tile. 10. Peel the plastic coating off of the adhesive mat, and carefully place each tile section onto the adhesive. 11. Once the tile is in the correct position, push it in place with a rubber float. 12. Repeat this process until the wall is covered with the tile. 13. Fill the gaps between the tile with the premixed grout and the rubber float. Apply it diagonally until all of the spaces between the tile have been filled with grout. 14. Fill the bucket with water and using a clean sponge, wipe the excess grout off the tile, again diagonally. Be careful to only wipe the grout off the face of the tile, not the grout in between the tiles. 15. After 24 hours, a haze may appear on the tile. To remove it, wipe the tile with a rag. Resources: To attach the tile to the wall, Tom used the SimpleMat tile setting mat, manufactured by Custom Building Proucts (http://ift.tt/23Mt66I). Tom installed Desert Sunset mosaic tile, manufactured by MS International (www.msistone.com). What to Know about Ear Reconstruction | Plastic Surgery

Considering Plastic Surgery? There are several different techniques and several reasons why one would need to create or re-create an ear. Most commonly there is a condition called microtia, and this is when a child is born without a normal appearing ear. In this setting, plastic surgeons need to create an actual ear. There are several different ways we can do this, in fact, there are thee different ways we can do this. The first way is by using a synthetic ear replica that latches on to the side of the child or the adult's head. There are problems with this, and that it has to be taken off every night and it can fall off at inopportune times. The second way to correct this is by using a synthetic implant, an implant made of silicone or some other substance that is put into a pocket underneath the skin and left in place. I also don't perform this procedure usually, because I don't like using synthetic, non-natural material in a patient's face. So, the procedure that I perform is that I take rib cartilage, I will not perform this procedure prior to a child being nine years old. So, we take rib cartilage from at least a nine year old child's rib, that cartilage is then carved into the shape of an ear, sewn together with steel suture and that ear construct is then put underneath the skin and creates and actual ear. The procedure often involves additional procedures in order to increase the appearance and the contour and the elevation of the ear, but I believe that using a patient's own cartilage and a patient's own tissue to reconstruct their ear is the best way to perform ear construction or ear reconstructive surgery. So that's an overview of the three most common ways to perform microtia reconstruction, however, again I believe that using a patient's own cartilage is the best way to perform this procedure.

How to Read the Threes | Tarot Cards

In this segment we are going to take a brief overview of the threes of the minor arcana.  The threes are associated on the tree of life with the third sephirah, Binah the great mother, the sephirah which means understanding.  It is the great sea out of which multiplicity will come, which births the entire rest of the tree of life.  In fact, the name of the number three is multiplication, and Pythagoras called three the first real number because finally instead of just a point for the one or a line, two points for the number two, we have a triangle and that is the first real form.  Every three has a certain stability which can never be upset, but which can issue forth a child or birth something.  The three of wands is called the lord of established strength and it is the sun in Aries.  We see someone, perhaps the magician at the height or zenyth of his powers.  It's a golden afternoon.  Look at that golden light that suffuses the card and he's standing high on a cliff, watching his ships come in.  This is established strength.  He's not aiming for anything, he is there.  When you get this card in a reading on the higher polarity it is attainment, achievement, tangible results, but all done with honor, vigor, the energy of the wands.  There's self respect here, there's attainment.  On the lower polarity it may have gotten there by ruthlessness, power drive, and really perhaps the ship is going to sink or not come in at all.  The three of cups, the lord of abundance, and this astrological attribution is the planet Mercury, planet of the mind, and Cancer the most receptive of signs.  So therefore it shows the receptivity of the mind and therefore creativity can flow in.  We see the three graces toasting to the joy of life.  This is a card of creative abundance and it's well aspected or in its higher polarity it's creativity, joy, merriment, perhaps even a child going to be born or a marriage going to take place, but certainly there is plenty to celebrate here and inspiration.  On the lower polarity maybe there's too many ideas, too much inspiration with which you really don't do anything at all.  Perhaps the cups spill out and there is disappointment or a blocked creative feeling.  The three of swords is a very special card because it is called the lord of sorrow, but it has a very high astrological attribution, this Saturn, the planet of karma in Libra the sign of justice and harmony.  Saturn is exalted in Libra.  This is no ordinary sorrow as Crowley points out in his book of thought.  This is [inaudible 03:50] the world's sorrow, the sorrow that unites all human beings.  I see it as the compassionate grieving of the mother because all threes come from Binah, because the great mother knows that when she gives life she also gives death.  Because the swords are the mental suit there is a memory here, a feeling and a yearning for oneness because now after the threes, the energy is going to cross the abyss down into manifestation and there will be a yearning for wholeness that will not be achieved again until we rejoin spirit.  On the higher polarity there is an understanding of why there is suffering, there's compassion, there's an understanding of the universal sorrow, there's a realistic use of it and perhaps growth from it and wisdom that you gain from it.  On the lower polarity it's just paralyzing depression, not understanding the sorrow, and the mind turned upon itself in a very vicious way.  The last of our threes is the three of pentacles, lord of material works where we find another planet in its sign of exaltation, Mars in the sign of Capricorn.  Capricorn represents work and Mars is energy and there is nothing that Mars would love more than to just work to its hearts content.  We see here a cathedral being built and there is a workman here.  Perhaps it is you being visited by two very curious people.  One we can see absolutely is a monk but who is the other?  It's the fool, so the craftsman you is visited by the vision and the voice, the vision being the fool, the voice being the monk or the Hierophant, and he is ornamenting this cathedral with seals of the great work.  Look at the three pentacles.  Those represent the threes that come into the top triangle on

How to Make a Crusty Bread | Make Bread

Watch more How to Make Bread videos: http://ift.tt/2x0qPcQ Okay, so how do you make a crustier bread? First, you have to talk about how do you make bread with a crust on it and what kinds of crusts you're looking for.The best bread that makes a crusty bread is one that's been slowly fermented or retarded overnight in the refrigerator, so that's number one. Number two is make a bread that doesn't contain any fat in it, so make a baguette dough or make a sourdough bread. Something that's a straight dough that doesn't have fat in it,and that you retard overnight in your refrigerator. That causes a reaction in the bread, and it basically allows the bread to develop a thicker crust in the oven. The third way to make a crustier bread is definitely by steaming the bread and providing some steam for the bread It's also another way to make a crustier bread is to have a bigger loaf of bread, where you need a longer period of time in the oven to dry it out in the inside, but then that sort of permits the outside crust to get crustier. But to me, really what makes a crustier bread is proper fermentation and a long fermentation, to me the longer fermentation, the crustier your bread is going to be.

TOH: Trade School- Exclusive Preview of A New Foundation!

Master carpenter Norm Abram continues work on removing the old clapboards, while out back at the new addition, general contractor Tom Silva and mason Mark McCullough carefully open up a hole in the old fieldstone foundation that will connect the old basement space to the new. Click here to SUBSCRIBE to the official This Old House YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=thisoldhouse Time: 3-4 hours Cost: $100 Skill Level: Moderate Tools List for Repairing a Leaky Water Heater: Bucket Flathead screwdriver Pipe cutter Shopping List: Expansion tank certified for potable water Quick connect T fitting Quick connect ball valve Quick connect elbow Quick connect female adapter Copper pipe Steps: 1. If there’s a leak at your temperature and pressure relief valve, first test to ensure it’s operating correctly. If it isn’t working properly, replace it. 2. If the T&P valve is operational, check to see if you have a pressure reducing valve, usually near the main water shutoff. If a pressure reducing valve or other form of check valve is present, you’ll need to add a potable expansion tank. 3. Shut the water off at the water main. 4. Using a bucket, drain the hot water heater just enough to get below the pipes and the top of the tank. 5. Use copper pipe and push fittings to connect the expansion tank. 6. Cut the cold water line above the tank using a pipe cutter, then push both ends of the pipe into both sides of the push T fitting. 7. Turn the water back on. Resources: Richard added a potable water rated expansion tank to the water heater, which is available through plumbing supply companies. Click here to SUBSCRIBE to the official This Old House YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=thisoldhouse Time: 2-3 hours Cost: $75 Skill Level: Beginner Tools List for Building a Tool Box: Hand saw Hammer Pencil Combination square Drill driver with 1” spade bit Palm sander Shopping List: 1x5 select pine 1x10 select pine 1” Dowel Box nails 80-100 grit sandpaper Wood glue Steps: 1. To determine the correct length for your tool box, use the longest tool in your tool box as a guide and mark just beyond it on a piece of 1x5 pine. 2. Cut the board on the mark using the hand saw, making sure that your shoulder is perfectly lined up with the edge of the saw to ensure a straight cut. 3. Repeat this process for the other side of the tool box. 4. Cut the ends to desired length using 1x10 pine. 5. The length of the bottom of the tool box should be the length of the sides, plus the thickness of the two ends. Mark and cut the bottom to that dimension. 6. To dress up the ends of the toolbox, cut the tops of each end piece at an angle using the hand saw. 7. Drill holes in the two ends of the tool box using the drill driver to accept the handle. Chose a bit that matches the size of the dowel you have and drill through both end pieces at the same time to ensure the hole is aligned correctly. Drill most of the way through both pieces, but to prevent chipping, flip the boards over and drill from the other side to complete the holes. 8. Sand the edges of all your cuts using the palm sander. Start with the lower grit and work your way up. 9. Assemble the sides, bottom, and ends together using wood glue and box nails. 10. Once the box is assembled, slide the dowel through the holes. Secure it to the box by nailing from the top of each end through the dowel. Resources: All the supplies and materials for this project, including 1x5 and 1x10 select pine, hand saws, hammers, and dowels are sold at home centers. So for your single leg Romanian deadlift you're going to be on one leg. And this is a little bit more advanced. You want to really make sure that your abs are nice and tight. They're always engaged to keep your core stable. That's where you're going to get your balance from when you do this. So I'm going to show you first, and then I'll walk you through it. So pretty much, you're just coming all the way down, bring that back leg up, and then bring it right back up just like that. You take it down, and up, down, and up. So, here you want to focus on pressing through that heel. That's the key on every exercise that you do for a sexy butt. You want to really make sure you push the weight all the way back in that heel so it really targets the back of the leg and your butt. As you're coming down you have a slight bend in the knee, soft knee here, and your shoulders rolled back, chest up. Make sure you keep that posture. As you come down really think about digging through that heel pushing the weight back. Then as you come up you raise the left leg up or the other leg that you're not standing on. So, you're coming all the way down pushing that weight all the way back into that heel, bringing that other leg up, and then coming right back down just like that. You're going to feel this right away even after one. It's going to feel really deep in the back of the leg, the hamstring, and the butt right here. So, you're coming down. Keep the shoulders rolled back, the chest up. And up just like that. And I'll show you on the other side. Again, you can do ten on each side, or you can alternate. I prefer to tire out one side and then the other. So do ten on one side, and then switch to the other side. Also, here, you can add weights to this when you feel like you need to spice it up a little bit. So, you can grab a weight, take it all the way down, and up just like that, keeping your focus on pushing the weight all the way back. And that's how you do a single leg deadlift for a sexy butt.

And they can be further be divided. Long term memory, the psychologist will tell you can be divided into explicit and implicit. If you study something and seek to remember it for a long period of time using any of the methods here or that you learned elsewhere, that's the explicit long term memory that you develop. Implicit long term memory is perhaps the car accident you saw a year ago that was quite terrible, that made an impression that stays with you. Short term memory is your everyday functional memory. Anything from what you had for breakfast to who you have to call right now, to how to remember what you have to do next. That's your short-term memory. Seeing something and do you remember it. The systems that we learn typically most affect and are most helpful for our short term memory. Short term, I can't place a time limit on it. If I memorize something I usually tell myself how long I want to remember it, and then I may repeat whatever trick I've used, whatever visualization I've used and you can see a number of them in this video series. Perhaps the next day, I'll just review what I learned and perhaps one day more. Then I've taken that short term memory and turned it into an explicit long term memory.

TOH: Trade School- Exclusive Preview of Getting the Lead Out!

Landscape contractor Roger Cook starts by transplanting the shrubs and plants from the front of the house to a place where they can be “heeled in” for safe keeping until the job is complete. Homeowner Joe Titlow shows host Kevin O’Connor how his company builds highly detailed architectural models (and a whole host of other useful items) by printing them with a 3-D printer. On the oldest part of the house, Kevin and master carpenter Norm Abram dig in by removing the front entry porch and the accessibility ramp. Watch the full episode: [link to full ep on YT if avail, or on .com if unavail on YT] Ask This Old House plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey installs a water conditioner to combat hard water Click here to SUBSCRIBE to the official This Old House YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=thisoldhouse Time: 2-3 hours Cost: $1000 and Up Skill Level: Moderate Tools List for Installing a Water Conditioner: Pipe cutter Drill driver Level Tape measure Shopping List: Citrus conditioner system Scrap plywood Screws Sandpaper Solder Flux Pipe Pipe fittings Rags Steps: 1. Before doing any work on the plumbing system, ensure that water is turned off at the main shutoff. 2. Locate an area on the wall near the water main where the citrus conditioner can be installed. Ensure the location has enough clearance for the filters to be easily changed. 3. Locate studs in the wall and mount a piece of scrap wood to the structure to serve as a backer for the conditioner using a drill driver and screws. 4. Assemble the citrus conditioner using the instructions with the kit. Screw the mounting brackets to the heads of the filter, then attach the unit into the plywood backer board on the wall. 5. Measure, cut, and dry fit the pipes to connect the main water line to the conditioner. Cut the pipes with the pipe cutter and clean the ends with sandpaper before dry fitting. 6. Disassemble the pieces, apply flux to the pipe and fittings, and then solder the connections. 7. Install the cartridges to the filter. The carbon filter should be installed immediately downstream from the main water shutoff, and the citrus conditioner should be installed downstream from that. The kit comes with a wrench that can tighten the cartridge to the filter. 8. Turn the water back on and check for leaks. Build It | Salvaged Door Shadow Box

Watch the full episode: [link to full ep on YT if avail, or on .com if unavail on YT] Ask This Old House general contractor Tom Silva and host Kevin O’Connor build a shadow box using wood recycled from an old door Click here to SUBSCRIBE to the official This Old House YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=thisoldhouse Time: 5-6 hours Cost: $100 Skill Level: Moderate Tools List for Building a Shadow Box: Table saw Circular saw Palm sander Miter saw Glass cutter and oil Marker Spray bottle Brad nailer Strap clamp Shopping List: Old wooden door Safety glasses Hearing protection Work gloves P95 or higher rated mask 60-80-100 grit sandpaper for palm sander Wood glue Glass Clear glue Brad nails Steps: 1. Older doors may contain lead paint. Use a test kit from a home center to verify if lead is present, and if it is, you may want to have the door stripped by a professional. 2. Cut the door down to pieces using the circular saw. Use the stiles and rails as a rough guide for where to make the cuts. 3. True up the sides of the boards using the table saw. 4. Shave off the stain using the table saw. Do two passes through the saw on both sides of each board. Since this was an old door, use a P95 or higher rated mask to protect yourself from the sawdust. Once the stain is removed, the mask can be removed. 5. Use the table saw to make a rabbet cut on the edge of one of the stiles to hold the back panel. On the other side of the same stile, make a dado cut to hold the glass. 6. Sand down the back panel of the door to use as a backer for the shadow box. 7. Fill in any holes with homemade wood filler made from wood glue saw dust left over from making previous cuts. You may need to install scrap fillers into larger holes before adding the wood putty. Sand the stile and the backer with medium grit sandpaper. 8. Apply a Danish oil finish to the stile now to prevent oil from getting on the face of the miters. Dispose of oiled rags in a bucket of water to prevent spontaneous combustion. 9. Once the finish dries, cut the boards to desired length in four pieces using the miter saw. The ends can then be cut at 45 degrees. 10. Using the measurements from the boards, the backer can be cut to size with the table saw. 11. Lay the backer on top of the glass. Using the marker, trace the edges of the backer onto the glass. 12. Wearing glove, dip the tip of the glass cutter into oil, then roll the cutter along the line on the glass in one pass. 13. Turn the glass over so the traced line falls just over the edge of your work bench. Lift the glass up, then snap it down onto the table. The glass should break along the line. 14. Polyurethane glue is water activated, so dampen the miters and secure three of the four pieces together using polyurethane glue, ensuring the dado cut lines up on all three sides. Before the glue sets, finish securing the pieces with brad nails. Do not secure the fourth side yet. 15. Spray the angled cuts and apply the glue to the fourth side. Slide the glass through the dado cuts, then secure the fourth side to the rest of the frame. 16. Use a strap clamp around the box to keep it tight until the glue dries. 17. Screw the back panel to the frame with small wood screws through the rabbeted section of the frame. Resources: Most of the tools used for this project including safety gear, plate glass, glass cutters, and sandpaper can be purchased at a home center. Tom made his own wood filler using Gorilla Wood Glue and sawdust. He held the box together with Clear Gorilla Glue. Helping a Child Deal w/ Low Self-Esteem | Child Anxiety

No child should suffer depression and anxiety without help, seek professional help for you and your child and here’s some resources for educating yourself along the way: Freeing Your Child from Negative Thinking: http://amzn.to/1jOAGeu How To Get Unstuck From The Negative Muck: http://amzn.to/1Pj1b7O Depression and Your Child: A Guide for Parents and Caregivers: http://amzn.to/1LiG97G What to Do When You're Scared and Worried: A Guide for Kids: http://amzn.to/1jOAOuH What to Do When You Worry Too Much: A Kid's Guide to Overcoming Anxiety: http://amzn.to/1JThS2M Watch more How to Deal with Child Anxiety & Depression videos: http://ift.tt/2xm0ObT I want to talk to you about how to help a child with low self-esteem. Low self-esteem means that the child really isn't feeling so good about themselves, and you want to figure out a way to help them with that. Now, of course, the impulse as a parent is to rush in and say, "You're great. You're terrific. I love you, somebody will. Everybody will know that," and just give them all those things you do to make them feel good from where you stand. But it doesn't mean that that's how they feel on the inside. Unfortunately, parents have a tough job. They're going up against a lot of things that influence their children, from pop culture, from media to their peers, kids have a lot of things influencing how they feel about themselves. And what you want to do is help kids feel good about themselves on the inside, regardless of all these messages that they're seeing and hearing from the outside, and it's not easy. Now, some kids may be just more prone to feeling bad about themselves, or a little more insecure, or a little more anxious or worried in general, and embarrassed. There's a few things that you can always do to try and help boost your child's self-esteem or make sure that they have a positive self-image. One is watch your own comments about yourself and about other people. If you're somebody that's always competing with the next door neighbor or with those images in the media, your child's going to pick up on that and think that that's important. You also don't want to compare children one to the other or to some standard that really doesn't fit for them. You want to help them with thoughts that are positive, so give them ideas and ways to puff themselves up and feel better about themselves as opposed to negative thoughts that they may have in their head. So talk to them about things that they can do and say about who they are and what they do and what makes them special. You may want to sit down and make a list with them and talk about, "Why are you kind of important and special?" and "What makes you the kind of friend your friends like?" or "What are you good at in school?" or "What are some of the qualities that make you unique?" and have your child be paying attention to those. You want to also put your child in situations where they will start to feel better about themselves and be doing things and with people that make them feel happy, make them feel strong and confident. Now the last thing is, there's no question that at some time in a child's life things aren't going to go their way. What you want to do is make sure that they're prepared and can somehow withstand whatever those difficult times are, those rejecting comments, those negative experiences in their life. So that no matter what goes on on the outside, they can still feel positive about their own qualities on the inside. Make sure you expose your child and your family to all sorts of kinds of people, so that they understand that there's a range of people and abilities and styles out there, so that they can understand that there's a tolerance for difference. And also, at times, you're going to have to make sure that you're there for your child whether they succeed or they fail, so your child can learn for themselves how to manage both success and failure.

The first thing to remember is that we're on the same side. The parents just want what's best for their child. We want what's best for their child. Sometimes we don't agree on how to get there or there's just been a miscommunication between us and the parents, or no communication. So the best place to start is assuming the best about the parents, that whatever they might be saying, their aggression, their anger, their frustration with you is really just coming from a place of "I want my student to do well or my child to do well and they're not. I don't know what to do about it and I don't want to be the source of the problem so I'm going to blame you." And we can all relate to that. And that will soften if we can assume that. If we can assume the best about the parent, it can soften the way that we deal with them. So the parents might be saying, "Why are you doing this?" Or, "You can't do this." I like to start by saying, "I hear how upset you are and I feel how frustrating this is for you and I can totally understand that, but what I'm choosing to do in the classroom is in the best interest of you son or daughter." Everything I do is always in their best interest and you might not agree with the way I'm going about it and we can have a conversation about that, and if you have a better idea how I can go about dealing with their disruption or dealing with whatever the issue is, and it's better than what I've come up with, I will definitely adopt it as the way that I deal with them in the future. But we need to have a conversation and we need to get on the same page about what is happening with your student. Oftentimes, I find that when parents are angry at me or they're coming at me aggressively, it's because the student has told them something out of context or has exaggerated something in some way and they're taking their child word for it and that's fine, and they just needed to have that cleared up for them. But if their anger comes at me and I get all defensive, then it's hard for me to explain to them in a rational way the context in which the thing occurred and why I handled it the way I did. In the end, just accept that anger is part of an emotional process that goes on between parents and teachers and kids but we're all on the same side and we can get there if we can help the parent see that we're also on their side. We also want what's best for their child and everything we're doing is trying to create that. Then we can work together to help the child.

What is the Rose Cleanse? The Rose Cleanse is a modified juice fast that enables people to gain most of the benefits of straight juice fasting, while also getting to enjoy an evening meal every day. So for many people it's really easy to think about juice until dinner, but really hard to think about going overnight without food. So in this way you can benefit from juice fasting during the day, and then still enjoy your evening meal at night. A great benefit to doing the Rose Cleanse is that during the day while you're taking all the highly alkaline green juice, you're awakening a ton of old matter which is what we juice fast for. But then, you're still getting to enjoy a lovely meal in the evening. The great benefit of the Rose Cleanse is that you get to benefit from all the highly alkaline green juice that you're taking in during the day with out stressing yourself about juice fasting long term. The Rose Cleanse makes juice fasting really easy to incorporate into your lifestyle over the long term and as we know, consistency over the long term is the key to success in this. Of course as with all fasting, we highly recommend incorporating colon hydrotherapy. So that all the you've awakened through the green juices during the day you'll be able to release when you have your colonics and thereby experience the most thorough cleansing possible.

TOH: Trade School- Exclusive Preview of Colonial Revival!

This Old House begins work on a 300-year-old farmstead that is rich in Colonial history. Homeowners Joe and Becky Titlow plan to preserve the historic part of the house, while adding space and modern amenities with two small additions. Architect Dan Quaile presents the plan using a remarkable model generated from a 3D printer, while general contractor Tom Silva inspects the structure. Landscape contractor Roger Cook considers the half-acre lot and what the homeowners would like to add: a storage shed, raised garden beds, a new driveway, and stone walls.
